Hi David,
when I look at this lines I think your Problem is the incorrect setting for
the monitor frequencys. Try a look in the Web, there are a few miltary
server in the United States with a lot of technical information specialy for
older hardware. Unfortunatly I don't know the adress of the server so I
think you must search it.

these math coprocessors will never work...
because the human cpu and the ram can not be overclocked, not even at
100mhz
silicium based fpu's are inaccurate for low speed bio-cpu's
and an fpu bus buffer would not have the necessary capacity ( ~ 1 GB )

1) postings in these newsgroups often recommend to put dos logical
partitions at the beginning of extended partition and linux after
them.
Other alternative: install linux in a primary partition
(you can have only 1 dos primary partition, but 1 extended partition
and up to 2 primary partitions other than dos or win95)
primary dos + 2 * other primary + extended = 4 in total
2) There is one thing strange thing in your partitioning. Why is there
no dos partition in extended with letter "D" ?

A winmodem would work *great* in a voice-only application. Why?
Because the toughest DSP work is encoding/decoding DTMF (duh), and
because you lose the byte-stuffing and serial-port interfacing needed
for an external voice modem.

Okay I tried it all (I think) and nothing worked. It took weeks. At last I

I probably will go ahead cross my fingers and order this printer - despite
HP's lack of support for Linux. The only difference between the 1100se
and 1100xi (besides price) is the bundled Windows software. Since I have
no use for Windows, I'm going with the cheaper package. Internally the se
and xi are identical. As Frank indicated they use the PCL 5e language.
The HP LaserJet 6L used the PCL 5 language. Hopefully the later is
compatible with the former... I just talked to a support person at HP who
claims that the languages are backward compatible.

In the UK it costs about GBP100 to install. I think it then costs about
GBP50-GBP70 per quarter line-rental (i.e. simply having it there), and
the calls themselves cost EXACTLY THE SAME as any other phone call, i.e.
roughly 1pence weekend rate, 2pence evening rate or 3pence peak rate per
minute.
The actual costs should be available at www.bt.co.uk somewhere. And if
you're paying for proper ISDN, that comes with MSN (i.e. multiple phone
numbers) and all the other gubbins.
There's a "cheap" ISDN called home highway, and if you are a moderately
heavy Internet user who has two phone lines anyway, it can actually work
out cheaper to change to highway from analogue.
As for the other (German) poster, their telco costs are higher than
ours, but one advantage of a state monopoly is that they changed the
rules some while ago - analogue is (noticeably?) more expensive than
digital, and it may be impossible to get a new analogue line installed.

According to another thread in this group ("RedHat 5.2 Compatible

the modem the poster is talking about is indeed the PCI model, as it

It sounds as though Linux is trying to tell you something - perhaps a manual

Pay close attention to the messages which appear while the system is trying to

I've the same problem with an IPC Starnote AMD333. Same Chipset and TFT
Display.
There is an accelerated server on
http://www.xig.com/support/demo2.html
I've tried the Demo-Server and it worked fine .... Any other suggestion?

Subject: NeoMagic Chip for Video and Audio

Hi, I am interested in buying a Dell Inspiron 3500 notebook, and from what
I hear that video and sound are handled by one singe NeoMagic Card. I know
that some people have configured this notebook to work well with Linux. My
question is to those of you who have configured it or those of you who have
configured similar notebooks.
1) Can you get 24 or 32 bit display using RedHat's NeoMagic Server that
comes with the RH 5.2? If not does it work with XiGraphics' commercial
server with 24 or 32 bit? or is it just not possible.
2) Does 4Front Tech. Support the soundcard using the OSS/Linux drivers that
they provide? Otherwise, how do you configure this sound card?
3) The Final question is really related to modems. Someone mentioned that
Dell sells this notebook with a winmodem. Do they have an internal modem
that they can sell this notebook with, other than PCMCIA card, since I'd
rather use the internal modem and not waste the space in the laptop and use
the PCMCIA slots for something else.
Thanks
Ahmed

I have the above router and love it. It is super easy to configure and is totally
independent of your system. Get the FA310Tx card to go with it and you will have
everything going in a matter of minutes.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 3500 and installed Redhat 5.1 on it. The Dell uses
a Neomagic Mediamagic 256AV combined audio/video chipset. Use the Neomagic
XServer which can be downloaded from most of the Redhat mirrors. It works
fine, but defaults 8-bit color. You need to add a DefaultColorDepth 16 or
24 to the display section XF86Config file depending on the color depth you
want. By the way this chipset appears to be used in the Gateway Fireant,
the Sony Vaio PCG 800 series, and the Toshiba Tecra 8100. I think its also
used in certain versions of the IBM Thinkpad 380 and 600 series, but I
haven't been able to verify that.
It took me a while to get the sound working correctly. It configures as a
Sound Blaster Pro compatible with IRQ=5 DMA=1,0 IO=220. I set my disk up
for dual boot Linux/Win98 (because of the internal winmodem). If you let
the machine boot to Win98 then do a warm reboot to Linux, you'll never get
the sound to work. The Win98 audio driver apparently does some things to
memory which hold over into reboot and make the sound inaccessible. The
sound works on my system now, but its a lot weaker than when I'm booted into
Win98.
Unfortunately, the internal modem is a winmodem (a fact I found out ex post
facto, Dell's site doesn't tell you anything about the type of modems they
sell with their systems). You can buy their Gold modem (tremendously
overpriced) or get one of your own from a third party. Dell's cheaper
modems, the $99 PCMCIA and the $99 internal modem are both winmodems.
I've had the machine up running with Linux for little more than a month, but
it took me a while to debug the screwy sound problem.
I'd be interested in hearing about anyone else's experience with Linux and
the Inspiron 3500.
