I'm not familiar with 2.4, but in 2.2 you should select "Parallel
printer support" (CONFIG_PRINTER) which is in the "character devices"
menu if you do "make xconfig". That one is supposed to compile lp.c.

?? This is mainly useful if you don't know what hardware's in your
machine. (If you don't know what hardware's in your machine, take the
cover off, poke around, and find out.)
I have a feeling that the netconfig program is not much more than a script
that tries to load all the modules for all the PCI network cards Linux
knows about in succession, saying "Card $FOO found" when a module loads
successfully. After finding PCI cards, it more than likely displays a
warning message about autoprobing ISA cards being semi-unsafe, then
continues if you want it to, loading modules for all the ISA cards Linux
knows about with irq= and/or io= parameters set to 0 (autoprobe). If a
module loads successfully, "ISA Card $BAR found, settings $BAZ" probably
gets displayed.
Once you know what hardware's in the machine, getting the drivers in is a
matter of "modprobe blah" for PCI cards, and "modprobe blah irq=X
io=Y" for ISA cards. Replace "blah" with the name of the specific module,
naturally... 3Com 590 cards use the 3c59x module, NE2000 ISA cards use the
ne module, NE2000-PCI cards use the ne2k-pci module, etc. HTH,

i got a computer running Win98 with 1 FAT32 partition... i want to
shrink that partition (it's about 8 gig) to maybe 7 gig and use the left
over meg for 2 other paritions for linux (ext2 and swap)... preferably
i'd like to do as much as possible before starting the linux install
(likely slackware7), but if i have to make the partitions during the
install i can do that too (i'll just be cheasy and use my old redhat
cdrom and use diskdruid since it's so simple then install slack over
that)... can FIPS work at all with my FAT32 partition?... also i read
the FIPS faq and doc and i remember it saying i had to move the windows
swap file in 386enhanced control panel (or something like that) by hand,
well, needless to say i'm lost on that... any help would be greatly
appreciated, as i'd really really really prefer not to spend $50 on
partition magic

I seem to be talking to myself a lot :-)
After going through the ALSA How-To, it seems that while the ES1879 is
supported, the support is poor. I don't understand why. Nor do I any
longer care. I found the magic incantations for make xconfig to
compile support into the kernel. I decided to screw the module method
and just put it in there.
Sound now works. I haven't tested MIDI or duplexity yet.

You don't need to have a feeling about it, you can just check it (vi /sbin/netconfig)
And, yes, you are right. It does a couple more things, like writing
the rc.inet1 and rc.inet2 startup scripts, but then it goes and
loads the modules for a number of known network cards.

Reserve more space for Linux. You'll be glad you did--even Slack will be
a bit cramped in only 1G of space, since you should reserve at least 64M
for swap.

FIPS2.0 has been able to work with FAT32 for over a year now. I think
it's fairly stable, 'cause if it weren't, people would be howling. There
should be no need to move the swap file in your case; merely defrag the
FAT32 partition before running FIPS. Please note that certain machines
ship with strange, immovable files stuck at the very end of the disk,
though. You can try to move them in DOS after changing their attributes
from Hidden,System,Read-Only, but that might not work.

The 3Com509B is an ISA card without jumpers (yech!). Therefore, you need
to set the IRQ and I/O values for the card somehow. You can download a
DOS setup program from 3Com's website--it's called 3c509x2.exe. You'll
have to run it under DOS, where it will extract itself into a whole mess
of files. The only one you need to care about is 3c5x9cfg.exe. Run that
program, follow the menus, and set the IRQ and I/O of the card to known
values. Make sure these values don't clash with IRQs that Linux is
already using; ISA cards are very bad at sharing interrupts.
Copy the 3c5x9cfg.exe to a bootable DOS disk just in case you ever have to
set the card's IRQ again.
Boot Linux. "modprobe 3c509 irq=X" where X is the IRQ you assigned to the
card earlier. Voil.

I have a Sound Blaster PCI128. When I install it, it says "IRQ has been

program called "IRQ Routing Driver" and install it in order for the sound
card to work. (I get it from the manufacturer of my HD Controllers, which

Allegedly my new DeskJet 612C can print at 600dpi in black and

chokes. It is possible of course that this is a "software" 600dpi
accomplished through tricks in the windows software.
Has anyone used this printer at 600 dpi? How? And is apsfilter or
magicfilter the weapon of choice for this printer? (Currently I
use apsfilter and the cdj550 driver.)

FAT32 = no prob
swap file = Win31, not an issue. Win9x uses dynamic swaps, so when you
boot from floppy there is no swap file.
The main requirement to running FIPS successfully is something you
already did -- reading the docs. The second thing is run a thorough
defrag from Windows before running FIPS.
Also, make sure you have the latest version of FIPS. It's really simple
if you're paying attention.
