Subject: fdisk cannot see my ESDI drive
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 02:12:39 GMT
I am trying to install Slackware 3.0.0 Linux using the Aug 9, 1998 boot
disk and color root on a PS/2 55 (386 with 4MB RAM) with an ESDI hd.
I've tried a variety of things including at boot:
ramdisk eda=58,64,32
(this doesn't seem to make any difference with or without it. I got the
numbers from DOS's msd.exe)
After I boot color, login as root I try the following:
# rm /dev/hd*
# mknod /dev/hda b 36 0
# mknod /dev/hda1 b 36 1
(have tried /dev/hdb as well)
This is where I get stuck.
# fdisk /dev/hda
(always replys..)
Unable to open /dev/hda
even if I specify /dev/hda1 or whatever, fdisk cannot see my hard
drive. I have patch_fdisk-ESDI.gz and dumped it on a disk, but I am not
sure what to do with it. How do you apply a patch?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you need right now are Chris Beauregard's Slackware MCA
installation instructions.
ftp://ftp.dgmicro.com/pub/linuxmca/Slackware/Slackware-MCA
They contain the information you need to make use of your
bootdisk, rootdisk, and the ESDI stuff. In fact, you may be
missing another piece. Get this file as well.
ftp://ftp.dgmicro.com/pub/linuxmca/Slackware/esdi_slack-09Aug1998.tar.gz
and follow the installation instructions on how to use it.
You may just want to go to the MCA Linux Homepage and look
around.

Good luck.

Your selections sound fine. What hardware you should get
depends on what you intend to run on it though. If you have
any interest in 3d games like Quake2 I'd go with a Celeron
processor and a Voodoo 2 or Voodoo 3 card.
For myself, I'm sticking with my old P166mmx with a monster
1 for the time being, as nothing I run but Quake requires
anything more. My major upgrade for the year tho is dsl
service from Pacbell, which is being installed on Monday.
My thinking there is that the only real performance bottleneck
in my system is the net access, so a faster net connect should
affect everything i do dramatically.

I'm having the same problem. IDE isn't entirely incompatible, but it
takes some work. The parport HOWTO explains the procedure, but there
are a few scripts I have to enter into some files, and I just don't know
which files.
Also, the driver can be found at

success, I'd really like to get my Syquest working with Linux.

OK, I got it. Damn IRQ conflicts. The problem was that /proc/interrups
only reported IRQ's 10 and 12 as being used, by the aic7880 and
ps/2 mouse, respectively. However, a look through /proc/pci revealed
that in addition IRQ 9 was used by the Permedia 2 chip on my video
card and 11 was used by the USB controller. As these 4 are the only
values you can jumper the zoom card to, you have to change one of these
other devices.
Solution -- I went into the BIOS setup and reserved IRQ11. So, now the
USB controller is set to IRQ14 and the zoom card gets 11.
So, the summary is:
Check _both_ /proc/pci and /proc/interrupts, and find/create an open IRQ for
the aha152x card.
Compile scsi support into the kernel or as module. Put the proper options
in an append to LILO or in conf.modules, respectively.
After booting, look for your zip at the proper /dev/sd*.
Good luck!

To Rob:
I have too an SB PCI 64 (same chip Ensoniq 1371) and it works well with the 1371
driver under kernel 2.2.5. No /dev/sndstat, I do not know why. Not supported
anymore by the kernel ? It gives some problem with programs looking for it, so I
had to patch the programs. It has no HW MIDI support: MIDI emulation must be done
in SW by apps, such as timidity. By the way, my card picks up noise in the form
of static when playing .wav and .mp3 files at mid to high levels. I think it is
the ripple in the power supply DC lines. Do you know of ways to filter it out
(with passive elements, such as capacitors, etc.) cheaply? I noticed you are
studying electrical engineering...
This is card is highly rated at www.pcavtech.com.

Hi I currently use a 486dx2-66 box with an older 1520 which only
supports drives under 2 gig (safely) running redhat 5.2. The drive
running off the 1520 controller is a 540m scsi drive. I recently

My questions is, what is the safest way to switch the driver in linux to
use the 1542? and from there, how hard is it to add the 9gig?

I got this working in an afternoon with a Yamaha ATAPI CDROM burner,
you just have to remember that all CDROMs become SCSI devices after
you start using the ide-scsi emulation.
I use kernel 2.2.2 and I would suggest that you use something inthe
2.2.x line of kernels rather than struggle further with the 2.0.x line.
I followed the same instructions as below.

I guess you have one of those AT MBs, since most ATX MBs come with USB connectors on
board. Most
AT MBs and cases don't have room for the USB connectors. I have seem the connector
and bracket
you need for US$ 10 at Fry's Electronics in San Diego. But i ended up buying an ATX
MB (US $25)
and case for some other reasons.

I know that there is not kernel support yet for the YMF724 PCI chipset.

Thanks, Tenox, but I do not think it can be memory. My reson is that
the computer is working very heavily with Windows 95. I work mostly in
graphics, with five or six programs working simultaneously. If there
was a memory chip that is bad, it will show.
I do not think that there is memory that works for Windows and not for
Linux.
I think to remember some problem with the K6 but I cannot put my hand
on it.
Thanks any way
