supported cards are listed on www.xfree86.org
check their supported cards list. Whether yours is supported will depend upon
the version of your xserver and some other tweaking that you may have to do to
get your Intel card working properly. I dunno but I guess your motherboard is
probably using the i810 chipset?

I just noticed something strange. Netscape will play midi files when I
click on them (it uses plugger, which invokes timidity apparently).
However, I still need to know how to get programs which use /dev/sequencer
to work. Is there some way which I can tell redirect /dev/sequencer to
timidity?

I am using the ordinary kernel oss sound module (es1371) not the ALSA

According to the XFree site, the r128 driver supports all Rage 128-based
cards, including something
called the "Rage Fury". However, according to the ATI site, and my
trusted local distributor, *there is
no such card*.
The 32MB Rage 128 card is called the XPERT 2000. However, this card
only supports 2x AGP, and I'd
like 4x. The 32MB, 4x ATI card is the Rage Fury Pro. This isn't a Rage
128 card, but a Rage 128 Pro
card - it's a different chip.
So, my question: does the r128 driver support the 128 Pro chip, in
addition to the 128 chip?
BTW, does anyone else find the ATI naming system to be rage- and
fury-inducing? Could they make
it any more opaque? I'm having visions of Vikings (spam, spam, eggs and
spam).

Anybody know how to detect hardisk udma mode (2,4,5) in Windows or Linux ?
I cannot find any program which can do it.
Is there any fundamental problem to detect udma mode ?
Can win98 driver change udma mode (e.g. from 2 to 4) or
it must use udma mode selected by BIOS ?
thx for help,
john.

Hey fellas,
I haven't had a problem with this awesome drive....But one thing I don't
quite understand....Why is this CDRW considered SCSI ? Do all CDRW's
somehow use some SCSI drivers?
Like I said, it works like a charm....I'm just wondering why this is....my
lilo.conf has,
append=" hdc=ide-scsi"
...and I have seen some other posts from people having the same append
info....
Thanks,

This is an FAQ. Skipping over minor details, ATAPI amounts to SCSI
commands over the IDE bus. SCSI burners were the first to be widely
supported by applications, in any O/S. Making an ATAPI device look
like a SCSI device to the application allows you to use the wider
range of applications written for SCSI burners. Linux does this with
the ide-scsi module; Windows does the same thing with the ASPI layer.

Get rid of 'ignore=hdd'.
I have a 4x16 CD-R installed as /dev/hdb with SCSI emulation. hdparm
returns errors but sets dma, 16/32bit and IRQ mask. Early cdda2wav
testing shows that best performance/least system impact is setting I/O
to 32bit (c=1), maskIRQ (u=1), dma (d=1, -X34).
With 'hdparm c=0 u=0 d=0 /dev/hdb' the read cycle (/usr/bin/cdda2wav -D
0,1,0 -g -O wav -S 16 -v1 -P 1 -n 75 -B file1 file2 ... file20)
generates load average > 3, cpu > 90% and hwclock looses about 8 minutes
for a 70 minute/20 track read at 16x. If I/O, mask & dma all set to 1,
load average ~1.8, cpu ~30%, no time loss. wav file write to ide1/hdc,
CD-R read from ide0/hdb.
RH 6.2 base + updates, 2.2.14 kernel, ide.2.2.14.20000124 patch, hdparm
v3.9, xcdroast 0.98alpha8, 525MHz Celeron, 256MB memory, ASUS P3B-F.

Well, I still have my GUS PnP and I use it under Linux but after really
really hard work. First of all: somehow GUS OSS driver detects _both_ GUS
Classic and GUS PnP and it assigns the same IRQ to both cards which is in
fact the same card - the result is you have an IRQ conflict which is the
reason for sound being chukky. If you look at /proc/interrupts you will see
it. I don't know any solution to it, so I advice to use ALSA drivers
instead. Anyway, if you look at OSS documentation you'll see even they
advice GUS users to switch to ALSA.
So, simply go to www.alsa-project.org, download tarballs, do normal stuff
and enjoy the sound :-)
OK, you'll have to do some work to make ESD work, cause typical RPM
included with RedHat and probably with Mandrake doesn't support ALSA, but
this can be done.
Have fun

I have an ATI Xpert 2000 and it does support 4x AGP, perhaps it is a revised
version, or possibly a Pro version (I'll check). The r128 driver supports it
with no problems, although it doesn't appear to be accelerated. In general
the r128 driver seems to support just about all the recent ATI chipsets,
barring perhaps the Radeon which I don't know about.

If you're so concerned about your hardware not working under Linux, either
read the HCL's, just like you would if you were buying hardware to run with
NT. Alternatively, just stop being a stupid consumer, and start being an
intelligent one, really. Do you buy hardware because it has "pretty blinky
