I'm running my K6-2 450 on an FIC PA-2013 revision 2 board with one
meg cache. But if I had to do it again, I would more than likely pick
up an Epox EP-MVP3G2. FIC's tech support leaves a lot to be desired,
while I've heard nothing but good things about Epox and their
products.

Mind you, I have no complaints about my board...I just think that FIC
is a little screwy in general. :) My 450 is running great @ 112 x 4
(448).

Here's the spec page for the Epox board:

You should have spent some time reading these newsgroups instead
of fiddling with your winmodem. There are about 10 messages
a day which state that winmodems don't work, and can't be made
to work, under Linux (unless the manufacturer supplies a Linux
driver or interface specs, which none do at present).

I can't imagine why it would matter. Use the standard CD-ROM if you can,
it's almost certainly much faster.

I have a Creative 4224 Blaster CD-RW on this system, and it works fine. If
2224 isn't a typo for this model, though, I can't help you.

Well I have a SIS 620 , which is pretty similar, kinda needed more
information, do you get this error when you try to go into 16, 24, and 32
bit modes ? or is this just 8 bit mode ?

Subject: Trident 3dimage+flyvideo=crash??? Please help!

Hello. I got a Trident 3dimage 975 AGP video card and a Lifeview
Flyvideo TV card. I have managed to configure Xwindows without much
trouble, but when I try to run xawtv, the system hangs *completely*, no
keyboard and the monitor displays a lot of multicolor parallel lines
(sometimes, other times just gets black). I'm quite certain that bttv,
bt848 and every driver have been
correctly configurated, and I think there is some kind of conflict
between those two cards. I say this, because the same thing happens
under Windows, when I use the program that comes with the TV card. But
when I use some other Windows programs (MoreTV, for example) it works
just right. It also works when I use the program that comes with the
card, if I use a resolution of 640x480 and 256 colors, but if I try that
with xawtv, it won't work because it needs at least 16 bits of color
depth.

So, anybody knows anything I can do to make my TV card work with
Linux? I have Debian 2.1, with kernel 2.2.10, and I use the TV drivers
included with this kernel. Thanks in advance...

Try:
mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/jaz

for some reason jaz drives come as sda4 although you can change them as
you did when you formatted with Linux. You could also have formatted
them as vfat with Linux on sda1, but I'm not sure how that would work
with windows.

I usually add a line to /etc/fstab like this:
/dev/sda4
/mnt/jaz vfat
noauto,user 0 0

Then I can just say:
mount /mnt/jaz

and all of the information about which device and what kind of file
system is gotten from the fstab file. The 'noauto' keeps the device
from being mounted at boot. Trying to do that can cause problems if you
don't keep a disk in the drive. 'user' allows me to mount and umount
without being root.

do a
man fstab
for more information about the fstab parameters. You do have to be root
to change the file, and be sure you don't change anything else, or you
can have some real headaches when you re-boot.

Good users comments on the Asus P5A and Epox(s) motherboard.
I haven't seen any Epox locally here in Vancouver, Canada,
but have to check again. What do you all think about the Asus P5A?

In most cases this would qualify as "most", but also, most people in the know
would give the success rate (without extreme/costly measures) at about 80%.
Some others would say 90%. I just say "most".

Both my celerons 366 oc to 550, albeit at 2.2 voltage on my BP6.

Have you upgraded any of the packages for Mandrake (6.0)? Try grabbing and

G'day!
I have a slight issue... I'd like to get both my soundcards
(Creative SB Vibra 16 and ESS 1868, both ISA PNP) working in linux (Red
Hat 6.0). I can get the SB16 working fine, both Windows and Linux
assign it the proper resources you'd expect for a sound card. The
second sound card is detected and configured by ISA PNP but I don't know
how to get the sound module to load for it... I don't know if I have to
load it twice, or if I have to specify two groups of settings (like with
two NE2000 cards) or what. The sound HOWTO I read only really discusses
dual SB16's in the monolithic kernel, but I tried that and it doesn't
work. The ESS 1868 is supposed to work as a soundblaster 16. Note that
I can get both cards working fine in Windows 98.

Please CC to my email if possible.

Thanks,
Mark

Actually, I'm currently using two 64 meg sticks of PC66 SDRAM left
over from a previous computer. The chipset has the option to set the
memory speed to the AGP bus speed which is what I've done. I had
thought of upgrading to PC100, but kept putting it off. :) After
upgrading nearly everything else, I've almost got enough parts to make
another computer. After I buy another hard drive I'll be slapping it
all together with my PC-66 RAM into a computer for my girlfriend and
her children. I'll probably snag some PC-133 for myself then in
preparation for a future upgrade to a K7.

I've heard of other people with PC-100 having problems running @ 112.
I wonder if the fact that I'm only running the RAM at AGP speed is the
reason I don't have any problems? If I had any PC100 on hand I'd test
this out for you. :) You might try it - I'd imagine that the K6-III
isn't too terribly sensitive to main memory speed. If you have some
spare time and a reliable benchmark for memory performance, you might
try comparing 4.5 x 100 with the memory set to 100, then 4 x 112 with
the memory set to AGP speed. I'd sure be interested in the results!

The only BIOS tweaking I did was to set my memory timings to "turbo"
and disabling a couple of features (read around write? I don't
remember) so that my Riva TNT would work properly. Nothing
spectacular, eh?

If you run that test please forward the results - I'd be very
interested.

thank you,

Scott H.

Hey,

Anybody know how to disable Auto Speed Detection in the token ring
module ibmtr.o?

My Linux box has a Turbo 16/4 Token Ring card from IBM in it, and I'm
trying to network it with a token ring XStation.

I've got my Linux box plugged into an IBM 8228 MAU, and the only other
thing plugged in there is the XStation 160. I'm trying to get the
XStation to go to Linux, but when I do a "modprobe ibmtr" under RedHat
6, it gives me a periodic

tr0: No signal detected for Auto Speed Detection

while the MAU clicks. The modprobe detects the card, giving me the
correct MAC address for the card - so I have high hopes. If I could
just force the Linux box into 16 Mbps, I think the XStation would follow
it's lead...

Thanks,

Harold
