To those who are interested in two monitors:

The MetroLink X server can handle up to 4 monitors using Matrox cards.
It USED to be available on the Infomagic Linux Developers Resource CD's
and RedHat.

The last RedHat that had it was RedHat 5.0 with the 4.1 MetroLink X server.

The last Infomagic LDR with it was the June/July 1998 with the 4.3.0
MetroLink X server.

The most current MetroLink server is 4.3.1

The June/July LDR is still available from some vendors.

I had a minor problem with installing the 4.3.0 server in that the
configuration file had an error which was easily fixed. The 2nd
monitor had a distorted image. I tracked it down to an option that
had to be commented out. More info available if requested.

Ken,
get a copy of pppsetup (in tar.gz format) from the sunsite in the
linux/networking/serial/ppp tree (I think). Get the printout of your ISP
setings in netscape from when you signed up ( you did print this out didn't
you ?) and you should be able to figure the rest out. If you can't, email me
back and I'll help you out. The isp helpdesk was pretty good at helping me
out, but I know what to ask. The fellow I talked to uses RedHat for his
personal connection, as do I.
pppsetup will write she connection scripts for you based on the info you
give it. All you really need to surf the net is your ppp login name and
password and let netscape take care of the rest. You can dissable sendmail
and everything will work fine unless you have multiple users and a real
network setup, in which case you don't need to connect to bellatlantic with
the phone anyhow.
Let me know how it goes,

Bob

I'm having a problem with the APM feature of my MB causing the clock to drift
from the HW clock, or this is what i suspect. While the CPU goes into standby
modeor sleep etc the clock in linux drifts from the hw clock i reset it using
hwclock --hctosys and everything is ok till the PC goes back to sleep. I'm
sure that this never used to cause a problem until I started running the dev
kernel but can't be totally sure. Any ideas please?

Hi

I've been wrestling with setting up an FB for a while now. Here's my
status. I've installed slackware 3.6.... installed kernel 2.1.13. I
downloaded and installed XF333servonly. This is a 3d blaster banshee
card, 16mb. When I startx, I get a yellow background, an X cursor,
taskbar (fvwm95) but that's it. If anyone can shed some light on what
I may have missed, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

  glad ya got some response...

from what i can tell by the documentation, you're doing by hand (modprobe zftape,
etc) what modprobe does on bootup using the conf.modules file... hmmmmm

can i assume you rebooted after commenting out the conf.modules entries?

Hello, Scallia. I had the same problem myself with that same card. Here's what I
did. It should work for the most part.

1. Assuming your card is still in PnP mode, go to "My Computer", "Properties",
"Device Manager", and then to your network card and double click that device. Go
to "resources" and write down your IRQ range and Input/OutPut Range.
2. Run "winipcfg" and write down your IP address, subnet, defaullt gateway, etc...
since you will need that info for RH.
3. now shutdown to msdos and using the disk that came with your card, run the
configuration and disable plug-n-play. Don't forget however, to assign that card
the same I/O and the same IRQ you wrote down.
4. Turn off the computer and then reboot to Linux. Now at the lilo prompt, I
assume you're using lilo, type "linux eth0= IRQ_number, I/O_base address, eth0.
5. After getting it to work under Linux, reboot to dos, go to "Command Prompt
only" and re-enable PnP. Note, this will not affect Linux in terms of it
recognizing the network card.

Please let me know if it's still not working. I will be more than glad to help you
on this matter.

I can't say what's wrong, but I believe RedHat still doesn't require
the password when you boot into single user mode.

At the boot: prompt, type: linux single

That should get you to where you can set the password in the ususal
way and be off and running.

Redhat 5.2 supports FAT32. AFAIK, all linux kernels do it the same way --
using the vfat filesystem.

I have an AWE64, and have had no problems with it as a "generic sound card"
since I haven't as yet been able to enable the wavtable functions of the
board. (This is due to lack of time, not lack of ability) Because my
motherboard is knowledgable about PnP devices, I don't need to bother with
the isapnp package, but you might depending on the motherboard you have.

On the other hand, I have heard of so many nightmares with the PCI128
it's scary. The basic problem with it is that it is not actually Creative
Labs' board. Creative Labs acquired a company that made sound cards, and
then relabelled that company's product (a 128-bit pci sound card) as the
PCI128.

If you want a 128-bit sound card from Creative Labs, go with the SoundBlaster
Live! card, which is a genuine 'SoundBlaster' compatible card. It's a little
bit expensive though.

Using an SVEC PN-1700T here. It's a combo card - 10-baseT or 10-base2.
Also, it's got jumpers on it. Set the jumpers, compiled my kernel with
NE2000 support, and it worked flawlessly. Got it cheap from an online
auction, too.

PC/X - Linux install FAQ

How to install a PC/X non-intelligent card under Linux:

Determine the IO ports to be used, the PC/16 has IO ports fixed by PAL chips.
The 4 and 8 port versions and the ClassicBoards are configurable.

Determine the IRQ for the board

 For each port issue
"setserial /dev/ttyS[#] ^fourport port [IO] irq [IRQ] uart [UART]"

 Issue
 "setserial /dev/ttyS[first#] set_multiport port1 [IO] mask1 0xf match1 0xf"
for the control port on a four port board.
Use 0xff for 8 ports, or 0xffff for 16 ports.
Use port2, mask2, match2 for a second board.

 Done!

[NOTE: the first Digi port should be ttyS4 or higher on most systems.]

=====================

The setserial commands are how you tell Linux that the ports are there,
the "set_multiport" option is used to activate the control/status register.

Subject: help: pcmcia NIC linksys etherfast 10/100 cardbus w cirrus pd6832??
Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 04:08:17 +0000

Hi wizards,

I am about to run screaming around the house... Has anyone ever
successfully set up a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Cardbus network card on a
notebook with a Cirrus PD6832 cardbus controller?? If so, PLEASE tell me
your secrets!

I am currently trying this with a 2.0.36-1 kernel, pcmcia card services
3.0.6, no special options. My modem card is recognized and configured
without any trouble while the network card keeps showing up as an
anonymous memory device. I have compiled the tulip.c driver module as
described on the Linksys web site, but this is not (yet) the problem
since this module does not get started so far (because the card is not
recognized).

The debugging tools which come with pcmcia-cs-3.0.6 also do not help
much. The CIS dump shows nothing what so ever (no information available)
- so I get the impression that there is some fundamental problem with
this card / card bus controller combo..?

Under Windows 98 the card works just fine, so the HW is ok.

Any help highly appreciated,

Markus

perch presi dalle mille preoccupazioni e attivit quotidiane.

According to Andrea Arcangeli <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, who has done
some work on the parport driver, Epson violated the specs (and in a
buggy way, too) for parallel port communications in order to go faster
under winzzzz.

If I remember correctly, he told me that recent kernels will have an
option to activate a specific workaround, so have a look and let me
know... I'm too busy/lazy to try it myself.

Hope this helps,
Andrea.
