I bought the exact same Epson 640 printer, and haven't tried
it out yet.

Please let me know what happens (I have Red hat 5.1).

Well, I have tried them both on win98 now. According to 3DMark99 the
Banshee is faster in almost, ALMOST, every test, except game2 and
those 16MB and overrenderings. Or have I understood it somehow wrong?

It's true that it doesn't know how to use the AGP... I haven't tried
the Banshee yet on Linux, but atleast the TNT is working well, except
that I haven't gotten any type of 3D support yet working. I miss
Quake2 :) I wonder if I can get Banshee working ...

U gotta understand me, I'm quite new to Linux.

Subject: Scanner and backup buying advice
Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 11:08:59 +0000

I am planning to buy a scanner (and possibly in the future some form of
tape
backup). My system is a Dell XPS M233s (Pentium MMX 233MHz, 32Mb RAM,
6Gb
IDE disk, partitioned 2Gb for W95 & 4Gb for Linux, CD-ROM & ***** USR
WinModem).

I need to be able to run scanner and tape backup from both Linux &
Win95.

I've just had a bad experience and had to give away an old Logitech
ScanMan
256 (handheld greyscale) scanner (ISA bus card interface) which worked
fine
on my old 386, but refused to work under Win95 (couldn't find free IO
addresses - scanner could only use 280h, 2A0h, 330h & 340h, all of which

are "in use by an unknown device" under Win95!).

I reckon my options are as follows:

- some scanners and backup devices are supported under Linux in their
parallel port incarnations. Check which ones are supported, and cope
with
the inconvenience of multiple use of the parallel port.
- buy a SCSI card, and get the SCSI versions. Long term sounds more
promising, as whatever my next machine is I'll be able to get a SCSI
card for it... Got to then choose SCSI card! (See below)
- some peripherals are coming with USB connections. I can't find an
awful
lot about USB support and drivers, even in the latest 2.2.0-pre1
kernel
sources - what USB work is going on for Linux? (My Dell has USB
sockets.)

I'm pretty sure that the "best" option would be SCSI, but that bumps up
the
cost... maybe as much as UK pounds 100 for card + premium on
peripherals.

Then you've got to choose a SCSI card! (Does anyone know anything about
the
Adaptec AVA 2902, cheapest PCI SCSI card advertised in UK at present? I
can't find references to drivers for Linux etc...) I'd prefer to go PCI,
not
just for speed, but also because of the better PnP installation. Is that

feeling an accurate one?

Advice appreciated!!

Cheers

Colin Brough

Hmm... after testing again I have to swallow my words... Allthough
Banshee gets better 3DMarks, it has lower picture quality and goes
with quite the same results. One is better at something and the other
in something else...

I'd already tried the xvidtune, and got pretty much nowhere with the probs I
listed. Also, I don't have the virtual settings anywhere in my XF86Config
file, and I have only one resolution listed in the Server section.

I don't really understand how to compute the values for the Horizontal and
Vertical timings, so I just looked for a modeline for another resolution
that had the same dotclock value, and figured the ratio b'w the resolution
and H or V timing; I then applied the ratio to the resolution I was trying
to create. The values I came up with were sufficient to begin working in X
(I used xvidtune to adjust the distortion). That leaves me at the point I
described earlier.

I just got a Creative Soundblaster PCI128 and am trying to configure
the thing. Under the assumption that it should behave like a
SB16, I've tried the standard options in the Sound-HOWTO, but I get
a message like "dsp reset failed - device in use." What is going on here?
Is this card not compatible with a SB16? Is this particular one
broken?

config data: linux-2.2.0-pre1, glibc-2.0.7

CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDCLAS is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDPIN is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_PAS is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_SB=m
CONFIG_SOUND_ADLIB=m

(unset)

CONFIG_SOUND_VMIDI=m

(unset)

CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND=y
# CONFIG_ACI_MIXER is not set
CONFIG_AWE32_SYNTH=m
# CONFIG_AEDSP16 is not set

(everything else is unset)

Does anyone have any experience with these cards? Any help would be
appreciated. Please reply via email; my usenet access is *real* spotty these
days

Subject: Possible Way To Solve The Winmodem Problem
Date: Sat, 2 Jan 1999 14:15:59 GMT

The DSP algorithms for 56 KBaud modems are probably state-
of-the-art, and would be extremely difficult to reproduce.
It would be far beyond the work of writing a normal driver.

However, if the Winmodem industry is anything like the
accelerated super VGA chip industry, the manufacturers of
the modem DSP chips may be providing generic software and
electrical schematics to the modem manufacturers, so that
the latter don't have to acquire the very special expertise
themselves, at substantial cost in both money and time.

The chip companies may be willing to provide a few Linux
driver writers with the same information under a non-
disclosure agreement. If the nature of the Linux kernel
module system permits it to use binaries that are specific
only to the particular type of CPU (e.g., pentium), and
don't have to be compiled for each install or kernel build,
then these Linux programmers could distribute binary modules
that wouldn't violate the NDA.

A complication might arise if the generic chip software is
supplied in the form of object binaries, instead of sources,
by the chip manufacturers, in order to protect their
investment. It would be necessary to get them to produce
Linux object files, which might be done by visiting their
site with a Linux portable and software to translate from
Intel assembler source to GNU assembler source. After the
source is translated, assembled into object files, and
written to floppy, one might have to format the hard drive
to satisfy them that their source code was not walking out.
This all would have to be repeated a number of times before
working object modules were obtained, but (after the initial
permission) it wouldn't have to involve the chip company's
higher-ups, only one engineer there who's interested in
Linux (or at least who's assigned to work on the project
for a total of a week or so).

The only remaining problem would be any differences from,
or parameterizations of (e.g., address numbers), the generic
software and schematics that are unique to particular manu-
facturers' Winmodems. The modem manufacturers might be
willing to supply *this* information, since it would not
have the large economic value that the DSP algorithms do.
(They might not be *able* to provide the algorithms anyhow,
if they got them from the chip manufacturer under a NDA.)

Even if a modem manufacturer is not willing to supply this
particular (and fairly simple) information, it may be pos-
sible to reverse engineer it, given the generic software and
schematics, by, e.g., writing a test program to try all the
possible port numbers.

There are obviously a lot of assumptions and speculation
involved in the scenario presented here, but it may be
worthwhile to check it out. (Not by me -- I don't have
Linux yet, and my modem is external.) Besides the economic
disincentive to users of having to buy a new modem in order
to use Linux (especially costly for owners of portables),
someone pointed out that the 153 KBaud maximum rate of the
serial port is inadequate to carry the data stream at full
modem compression. So those Linux users who want the fastest
possible gear might even *want* to go out and buy a Winmodem
if drivers were available. This could be pointed out to
the chip and modem manufacturers as an additional incentive
for them for them to cooperate (beyond the incentive of not
having new computer buyers *reject* their products in order
to be able to use Linux).
