IIRC, with the latest util-linux (I forget the rev #) and latest Linux 2.2
pre-releases, you can now make the swap files bigger than 128 meg. I don't
recall when the change went in. I expect we'll see people grousing about the
only 128 meg limit for the next two years, judging on how long it took people
to upgrade their documentation back from the days when the limit was 16 megs
per swap partition in the 0.99 era (ie, long after the limit had been raised to
128 meg in so-called stable kernels, people were still quoting from obsolete
documentation that hadn't been upgraded).

I have an AWE 64 OEM soundcard.
It works but on boot up I get 2 errors under Redhat 5.2
I get a message like:

I checked this file does in fact exist right where the error is says it
doesn't
I am not sure how to fix.
Any help or advice is certainly appreciated.

Subject: Advice on building an AXP Linux system
Hi folks,
I have just stumbled upon a Digital AXPpxi 33 motherboard. The OEM
design guide is dated October 1994. The chip is either a 166 Mhz 21066
or a 66 Mhz 21068. I can't pry off the heatsink to look. Anyway,
looking forward to the day when I have a persistent net connection, I
thought I build this thing up to use as a server for my internal net,
maybe also a QuakeWorld Server, Hotline Server, Personal Mail or Web
server, something like that.
My question is: Is it worth it? The OEM design guide is dated 1994. Is
this board too piss ass slow to be useful for anything? Maybe it could
serve some menial intranet purpose in my house.
The list of hardware in the design guide is quite out of date, I'm sure
I could pick up a case, 4 gig SCSI2 drive, and some cheap ass 64 bit
video card and have something that works. Any recomendations? I figure
I'll run Red Hat 5.2 on it.
If you wouldn't mind, reply both to the group and email. I never get
the time to read this group regularly enough for stuff to not expire on
me.
Thanks,
Gerry

Dear All,
I have just switched to linux since I cannot afford to buy an original
copy of win98. Please bear with me if this qustion has already been
posted.
I am using a PCI video card currently but would like to upgrade to an
AGP one in the near future...probably something like that Voodoo Banshee
AGP thingy. I wonder if linux actually supports AGP video cards?? I
have already compiled kernel version 2.0.36 on my box.

I have an SiS 5597/5598 video chipset. I had the same problem until I

to have fixed all of my problems. Try it, WWW.XFree86.org

I usually set up my connection using the root account. Once set up
in the background, I can connect through it from any account.because
the service is between your machine and the machine (router or
terminal server) on the other end and the fact that it was set up
by root doesn't matter.

I do appreciate any help and comments.
There's a decent chance that your monitor is briefly rejecting your scan
parameters, thinking it needs to protect itself. Trying using 'xvidtune'
to find the point at which the blanking occurs, and then adjust enough
'clicks' in the other direction to keep it away of the forbidden region.
Or try commenting out the most afflicted 'modeline' and see if X picks
another one which works better for you. If that works, try doing the
same for the others. Or try derating your horizontal and/or vertical
scan rates and see if X picks better 'modeline's for you on that basis.
Good luck!

I'm sick and tired of you new generation "Hackers" warez kids. You pussies
have no brains, lack attention spans and are severly misinformed. Your
statements lack basic coherance and present little finnesse in the form
of written expression of thought.
Stop insisting that RedHat is free! Linux is FREE. RedHat is a commercial
entity that as a sign of good will released a lot of their code (rpm ....)
into gpl (or similar) and made their distribution very inexpensive if purchased
with manuals or free if one believes they cannot afford it otherwise.
When you grow up, hopefully soon, and get a job, hopefully outside computer
industry, you'll understand that there is really nothing FREE. Even linux is
not totally free, do you think Linus, Cox and countless others would continue
their work if all they got as feedback was crap like yourself? I don't think so.

absent the written documentation, how would i go about determining the
base address, irq and dma for the parallel port of my pc?
i have one of those "all in one" motherboards, with a ditto easy 800
attached to the printer/parallel port... as far as i can tell, to
sucessfully use ftape i will need to "configure" base address, irq, and
dma(s).
best would be an app that probes this for me...
any suggestions?

If your SB16 Pnp sound card is using these settings; IO Ox220 and IRQ 5.
Edit your rc.modules file, find that line
#/sbin/modprobe sound
and remove #. Save file and then reboot your system. No problem.

I am pleased with my ATI RAGE II/Mach64-based 3DXpression+. That
particular board is discontinued, but any Mach64-based board should do
what you want (assuming the above list is complete). X is hardware
accelerated, though not quite as fast as my friend's Permedia2 based
board (but it doesn't support near the text modes you're talking
about). Be careful about newer ATI board, based on RAGE 128 - I'm not
sure about X support, and you'll have to check for VESA 2.0 support -
mine is only 1.2. But the Linux console in 132x43 is *really nice* ;-)
