I'm planning to buy a new system, it'll include a Viper 550 if:
- XFree support Viper550 AGP version
- XFree DON'T abort RivaTNT driver
- XFree is stable enough...
anybody have any info?

I believe in the slackware dir there is a rootdisks/lowmem.txt file that

Does anyone have linux working with the ASUS P2B-S motherboard, which
has the onboard Adaptec SCSI controller?
Is there any chance that I'll get linux to treat my DVD like an
IDE CDROM?
When I used the recent updated boot disk from Red Hat 5.2, it did not
recognize my DVD, and it did not find my SCSI controller.
Hope someone can give me good news on this.
Thanks,

Does anyone have any recommendations on video capture cards or
graphics cards with video capture capability? Ideally I'd like to
do simple video editing of home movies &c. Is the video capture
capability of the All-in-wonder card supported? Is it any good?
How about Matrox Marvel?
Any input is welcome.

Greetings,
My problems with the 3C905B seem to have been fixed with the 2.0.36
kernel. The updated driver must have found its way into the new kernel
source. :) :)

Well now, I thought of this. But color _is_ important to me
as well as reasonably good photo quality. You just can't get
that with an older printer.

The general rule of thumb (that I often use) is:
if ( mem < 32M ) then SWP >= ( mem * 2 ) or SWP <= ( mem * 3 )
if ( mem >= 64M ) or ( mem <= 96M ) then SWP = ( mem * 2 / 3 )
if ( mem > 96M ) or ( mem < 128M ) then SWP = ( mem )
if ( mem > 128M ) or ( mem <= 256M ) then SWP = ( mem * 1 / 3 )
if ( mem > 256M ) then SWP = ( 32M )
It's _always_ good to have a swap file. Linux (like many modern OSes)
manages its file cache very liberally. So just in case you have a huge load
set aside for buffers/cache - a swap file is great to offset that extra
requirement.
If you find yourself doing practically nothing with 192MB of RAM - then
don't bother with the doubling RAM to get proper swap space size. Try my
formula - if you don't like it - drop the swap file down. If you're
wondering if Linux will choke with a small swap space - it won't, unless you
eat up all your available memory.

Doesn't explain the $40 difference between Winmodems and Real Modems
that I see at Best Buy. There's $40 of difference *somewhere* -- I
can't imagine they save $40/modem in technical support costs.

Or will the WinModem manufacturers have to write and provide 32bit
drivers. Proper drivers, that is, not the configuration (inf) files
which MS is confusingly calling modem drivers.

I got RedHat 5.2 to recognise the SCSI controller on my P2B-S Bios revision
1006. No problems, and yes you can use a IDE DVD ROM drive to install it
from if you can't get it to see you SCSI. That's what I had to do with 5.1
Dunno if it might be a bios thing.... but just out of completeness sake my
HD is ID0 and my CDROM is ID3.

The only logical solution is to repartition your 7.5G hard drive.
Toss that old shit and buy partition magic. You'll find it to
be the best buy you will have done in years. If you could afford
to buy a 7.5G I'm sure you can afford the $50 or so for partition
magic and $1.99 for RedHAT 5.2.

Same problem, as far as I can figure, the problem is with the way the program
that creates the boot disk looks for the floppy drive. Normally the floppy is
/dev/fd0 but with a LS-120 Atapi drive the floppy is actually /dev/hd(b,c,d..)
depending on where you have it installed. I would guess, I haven't checked to
closely, that the bootdisk creation program sends the format command to
/dev/fd0 and since there is none it errors out.
>and it wouldn't create the diskette. Is there a way to create a bootable

One way would be to
1 - create a bootable DOS floppy
2 - mount the floppy under Linux
a - mkdir /mnt/floppy - may exist
b - mount -t fat /dev/hd(b,c,d) /mnt/floppy - (b,c,d) use only 1
depending on where you LS-120 is located(shows during boot)
3 - cp /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36(something else here) /mnt/floppy
4 - put the RH5.2 disk in the cdrom drive
5 - cp /mnt/cdrom/Dosutils/loadlin.exe /mnt/floppy/loadlin.exe
6 - In DOS/Windows setup a *.bat file with a line like this
c:\LOADLIN\LOADLIN.EXE c:\loadlin\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro
substitute your Linux partition for the one I have in here. To find it, if you
don't know, run fdisk and do a <p> then find the Linux partition.
This only one idea. There are probably better ones around.

provided you've installed everything correctly (i.e. connected it up
and your kernel has been compiled appropriately) it's merely a matter
of mounting one of the /dev/hd? (with knowing more about your hard
disk config etc i can't tell you what letter ? will take) into a
directory.
the normal place to mount such devices is in /mnt/ directory,
preferable in a meaningful sub directory (e.g. /mnt/zipdrive) that way
you can also mount other devices into other meaningful subdirectories
in /mnt/.
to mount a device (make sure you have a pre existing sub directory):
mount /dev/hd? /mnt/zipdrive -t vfat
hope this is of some help,

I am planning to buy a new LaserPrinter for homeuse.
What I need is a laserprinter working with Linux and Windows (sorry, I
have to use it for a few things) with good grayscail printing and good
overall printing. Postscript (if I am right, every postscript printer
works with Linux?) would be nice but is not a must.
My limit is somewhere at $700.
I searched a while and found some printers which sound interesting:
- Kyocera FS-800
- Brother HL-1070
- Brother HL-1050
Any opinions on these printers (ease of use, overall printing costs,
failures, limitations) or other printer suggestions are very welcome.
