try some generic VGA X server, quality will be poor (probably 16 colors)
but it should work on (virtually) every VGA card.

Yep, I'm pretty sure you need glibc. Most newer Linux distros use glibc.

I have an ess solo chip on my new IBM Aptiva m/c.

Is this a hopeless task to get this working. What options should be
selected in kernel., I have tried Sound blaster compatible with IRQ's
used by windows and DMA used by DOS emulation.

No joy.

Hopeless ?

Any ideas appreciated.

you don't have to re-install your system, you just have to configure X to
use the PS/2 mouse. The only difficulty is that PCI card modem (probably
a winmodem ?) are not actually supported by Linux.

re-installing is just a totally time loss. In last resort upgrading ...
if you really want to use your new cd !
If you want to keep all of your hardly configured system ... the safest
is to upgrade by hand at package level

Thank you for the advice. I downloaded the source code and tried following
D.B.'s instructions, but I didn't get very far, probably because I barely know
what compiling and source code are. I decided to return the machine and start
over with a bare-bones box and then add in cards which are know to work.

I've just tried a different card - an old GXE 64 Pro from NumberNine.
Although it is of much lower performance than the Matrox, it gives
me a completely clean display.

I am concluding that the RAM on my Millenium II is damaged.
It's going back to the supplier tomorrow.

Maybe not cheap but we are using the Supermicro P6DGU motherboard, and it it
a good quality board.

Currently supports upto 2 X Pentium II 450Mhz, 2GB ECC Ram and has on-board
U2W scsi, Ultra SCSI and UltraWide scsi buses. Uses Intel GX chipset.

BIOS upgradeble to support Pentium III processor's.

Current price around 320 in the UK.

We have SMP Linux running on Ultra2 SCSI hard disks and performance is
nothing short of amazing for the price.

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone could share with me their experience getting
a CD-RW drive to work through the SCSI PCMCIA drivers in Linux? I am planning
to get a CD-RW drive for just that and would like to know if I should
reconsider.

Have you been able to treat the CD-RW drive as a rewritable drive, much like
a hard drive, or is that capability not yet built into Linux?

Would i have to upgrade from the 2.0.36 kernel?

thanks very much for any info.

Yep, and if they need to port it, strip out the superfluous code and the
comments should tell them what to do and how to do it. Give me well commented
code to maintain every time.

There's nothing worse than being given some code which has failed and has no
comments - except discovering that it was you who wrote is 5 years ago ;-)

By the same token, since, as you mentioned, virtually all parts for a
motor are available "off the shelf" why not send the secretary out to
purchase the parts and then have her/him put it together... according to
your argument, it should work...;-)

You *still* need the engineering skill to put the thing together. By the
same token, you *still* need the programming skill to put the program
components together as a cohesive whole...

But that has nothing to do with the earlier discussion regarding
to modification to the code itself. Perhaps I should have quoted
more of the context. The previous contention was that changes
had to be made to a design document and commented before the
coding changes were done, yet we have these programs that run
the internet where many chunks were contributed by many people
and then merged into the next version correctly, perhaps with
a new design to accomodate them. Where is the correspondingly
useful set of programs where someone circulates the design
document first and the contributors fill in the gaps to assemble
the whole?

Slackware most likel;y will not have any more or less hardware support
then redhat. They use the same kernel and underlying drivers, even a
lot of the same software. It is in the setup and software areas that
they differ,...not in the kernel or drivers.

That asid, the drive numbers are going to be

hda - primary master
hdb - primary slave
hdc - secondary master
hdd - secondary slave

the scsi disks are going to be
scd0 for the first scsi cdrom....not sure if scd is used for normal scsi
drives but I reacall using sd0 for the paralel zip on my dad's PC.

You have to mount this drive before you can access it unless your doing
raw writing or formatting.

Hi,
Sorry for my poor english !
I have problem to install Linux (from a Suse 6.0 package) with a graphic
card chipset Trident TGUI 9440 apparently non supported by Linux; I
can't configure Xwindow in any way. However, this card seems to be very
frequently installed on Olivetti Computers like mine... How do I get
around this?
Can't thank you enough for helping me !

did you have this problem with all the CD's you're trying to read ?
because the pb you descriibe can be caused by dust covering the surface of
the CDROM !

Hi!

I'm planning to buy a new computer and I don't know what
videocard I should get, because someone told me there aren't
good Linux-drivers for all videocards. I had in mind to buy the
Diamond Viper v550 3d card. I was adviced to buy the Matrox
Millennium g220 card.

Question: Which 3d-videocard works good with Linux/FreeBSD...

Thanks answering in forward!
