You downloaded the wrong program you need "power chute plus" program. It
will work with or without X.

My office standardized on Digital a number of year ago, and still has some
Celebis, Prioris, etc. machines around. AND we have some of the EISA
configuration diskettes.
If you still DO need the configuration diskettes, then let me know what
model machine you have (from bootup screen, or bar-code/serial label at back
of pc).

I installed RedHat 6.2 on my Athlon 800 pc. The install went off
peacefully. But I cant seem to be able to boot Linux afterwards.
Is this a known bug ?? I cant seem to find any doucmentation on it

Any help would be much appreciated.

Subject: Mandrake 7.1: configuration problems with Yamaha OPL-SAx
Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 13:48:44 +0100
Hi
I have installed Mandrake 7.1 on my Dell dimension XPS D300, which has
an onboard sound chip (Yamaha OPL-Sax). The configuration of the
'soundcard' fails. I have tried using isapnp as I did on RH6.1 but
iincur in various problems. On RH the sound was ok.
Using HardDrake I am able to configure the card (although not
completely, the gameport cofiguration fails) and it works, but the
configuration is lost at reboot (the initscript is missing, but should
be available with the next release).
Some error messages come up at boot time regarding sound modules, and my
limited knowledge doesn't allow me to understand what is going on.
Can any of you tribe elders illuminate me? :o)

Deja screwed my reply. Let's try again.
I had exactly the same problem when I installed Mandrake 7.0 on my
laptop. I found a solution in the PCMCIA-HOWTO at
<http://pcmcia.sourceforge.org>.
You need to edit /etc/pcmcia/config to make sure the following device
line is there - either edit the existing one or add a new:
device "serial_cs"
class "serial" module "misc/serial", "serial_cs"
Then, you need to edit /etc/pcmcia/serial.opts to set the SERIAL_OPTS
variable.
SERIAL_OPTS="irq 0"
You then need to restart the PCMCIA service. On Mandrake, and probably
RedHat too, you would enter
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
Setting it to zero should get the modem working, but probably slowly. If
you type
cardctl config
at a shell prompt it'll tell you, among other things, the irq of your
modem card (3 in my case). Replacing the 0 with 3 has allowed my modem
to connect at full speed, but for some reason everytime I reboot the
computer I need to change the 3 back to 0, restart pcmcia, set the 0
back to 3 and restart pcmcia to get a proper connection again. I'm
currently looking into that, so if/when I sort it out I'll post the
answer here!

The settings I've used for Crystal 423x cards in the past go like so:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9
modprobe opl3 io=0x388
The io= value may be different; I've seen some that use 0x530 so try that
if 0x534 doesn't work.

Subject: Need help with optimising HD speed.

I have two computers:
- overclocked Celeron @550Mhz (100Mhz busspeed) with a Quantum 13Gb
harddisk, RedHat 6.2, and
- one Celeron @500Mhz (66Mhz busspeed) with A Samsung 15.3Gb harddisk,
Debian/Slink.
When I do "hdparm -t /dev/hda", I get tremendous differences in speed
between both harddisk:
Quantum: 20Mb/sec (-t), 120Mb/sec (-T)
Samsung: 8Mb/sec (-t), 17Mb/sec (-T)
Both systems boot with the same hdparm parameters (like -c1 -m16 etc.).
Both BIOSes are set to autodetect the HD (and after checking, both use
optimum settings - LBA, optimum PIO, etc.).
I simply cannot believe the Samsung is so much slower than the Quantum
(even with the 30% difference in busspeed). There's nothing else
connected to the IDE interface the Samsung uses. Anyone know what else
there is to check?
Thanks,
Cliff

You may want to see our two Athlon articles, we talk about some of the
workarounds for MTRR and other booting problems. They're linked from
LhD's front page, http://www.linhardware.com. Also see user ratings and
workarounds for your specific motherboard (all Athlon motherboards are
listed by the Linux Hardware Database).

I which I could tell you ... but I won't receive this motherboard for
another 2 weeks (at least). I'm not buying this board for the sound
chip, but since I have it I should use it, if you see what I mean.
The board is a Supermicro PIIIDME.
