        I got my new Epson 640 to work with Aladdin ghostscript 5.5 using the
uniprint "device"; from my /usr/lib/ps2epson640.fltr filter:

        gs @stc.upp -q -sOutputFile=- -

        A test file (color PS) printed wit it and an HP 895Cse were nearly
identical; the Epson print being a touch warmer. This done on Slackware
3.4, upgraded to 2.0.36; and both printers controlled by Axis 540
printservers.

Hi,
slow printers might also be due to the lpt driver under linux,=20
(undocumented / non standart timing on newer epson / HP printer),=20
however, this is fixed in newer kernels (2.1.131 / 2.0.36 - I belive,=20
ckeck out yourself)

And remember, a Laser has to store a page in memory, where as a inkjet=20
is so slow, it doesn=B4t need to store a whole page of printout in=20
memory, and you wouldn=B4t like it to do so (or would you like to get=20
100MBytes for your printer). However, a large printer memory just=20
would cut down the time the PC has to spool data to the printer, not=20
the printout time itself.

Even though you've specified RH5.2, you'll also need to say what
window manager you're using. Once you do that, someone who's
using that window manager will be able to help you. Red Hat 5.2
includes several window managers, and there is no standard one.

Hi, Linux gurus,

I have a 56K Wisecom modem, it works fine under Windows NT. But whenever I
use minicom in Linux, the speed is unacceptible: about 8 charactors per
minute. It is not likely to be caused by IRQ conflict because even I reset
the IRQ, the speed does not change much. Who can give me some suggestion?

Kernel version 2.0.36 apparently recognises all fitted ram correctly so

Can't argue with that philosophy.Plextor CD drives are supposed to be very good
at digital audio extraction,
in case you ever care about that. And I would agree with the previous comment
about using an IDE CD drive if you need to save money.

Best Buy has a 17" made by EMC for $199. I'm more impressed with it than
I am with my 21" Sony. But the dream machine would have to have an LCD

FS: Cool HPCs(?) - Dauphin 486 DTR-1
======================================================================

I am reposting this b/c I am getting read to send a few out shortly
and figured I could try to save myself extra trips to the post office.

Please let me know if you're interested.

Thanks again for all the inquiries, keep 'em coming.

Ken

======================================================================

I am posting this b/c I like the Linux comm. and want everything to
know something about a piece of equipment I thought was interesting.

It's called the Dauphin DTR-1.
The unofficail Home page is:
http://www.eskimo.com/~toby/dauphin/

This link is hopelessly outdated, but with your help I'd like to
change that.

I'll get to the point.
I can get a hold of a good number of them and know that they will run
linux. Check the URL above for some info. (There is also a version
called HAL something that may work).

I am currently planning on selling these guys on eBay where they have
been going for up to $300. in the past.

My starting price for the DTR-1 and some extras is $150, but I would
go lower if someone was interested in a small quantity.

Here;s what you'd get.
* The DTR-1 a 486SLC 25 HPC/notebook computer 4mb memory, 40mb HD,
2400 Baud fax modem, VGA out port, com port, REAL par. port - will
work with zip drives! (nicer than a palmpilot)

* Detachable mini Keyboard
* Leather Case
* Battery
* A/C adaptor
* Car D/C adaptor

For my Linux friends (I mean that sincerely)
* Extra battery ($50 value)
* External charger
* Grid Hardshell case

What's missing:

*The Active pen (I can't find out where to get them 'cheaply' so if
YOU do let me know).
*The manual

Acces:
Floppy or External HD used to come as access. very hard to get and not
very nec.
Memory upgrade from 4mb to 6mb still avail.
Ethernet card also still avail.
(I will send any buyers info. on ppl. who can supply them)

You can see pictures at the URL above, eBay.com , or somewhere on
dauphintech.com .

I am very interested in getting this guy running with some small apps.
on Linux, but I'm not a programmer. I figured I'd try contributing
this way.

If interested please email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,
Ken

  David,

 I have a Hayes 3304 internal that works fine under RedHat 5.2. I have
 seen postings from folks claiming success with some of the Zoom 56k
 Fax Internal Modems. Basically, if it has address jumpers on it your
 probably safe.

 After you get your modem working the next hurdle will be PPP, I just
 downloaded the KDE window manager and it's KPPP is by far the best
 PPP dial-up mechanism I've seen for Linux. I highly recommend it,
 & KDE.

    Good Luck!
