Does anyone know how to get a 3com V.Everthing ext. modem to work
correctly with linux? It dials but then hangs.

Thanks

Travis

After a number of mounts an fsck is forced even though no errors have
been detected. You can change the number of mounts before a check
with tune2fs.

With the Banshee I find I need to use 16 bpp colours as a maximum otherwise
icons go transparent and eventually the display looses sync with my mouse.
I use startx -- -bpp 16 or xinit -- -bpp 16

alright, fridays are difficult thinking days for me.
for anyone who actually has this modem, i meant that the problem file is at the
microsoft address (see attachment), but the zoom upgrades are of course available at:
"http://www.zoomtel.com". the most recent flash update is "iz21899.exe" and it seems
to
make a world of difference.
the strange thing about this whole communications problem is that it seemed like
certain
patterns in specific files were causing the problems with downloads, and yet i had all
the
control characters escaped. it was only a few really specific files that were giving
me
problems (like this microsoft office service release), and i spent the first several
hours
after i noticed the problem by cursing microsoft for instigating some kind of high-tech
download sabotage. at least the time was well spent.

What is "the best" video card to start out with for a Linux newbie?

I',ve got an older AST Pentium 166 box with 128 mb Ram, an AcerView
76ie monitor (17 in), a 1.6 gb IDE drive, a Kingston 10/100 PCI
ethernet card, an AWE 64 sound card. The AST has some kind of video
on the motherboard, but has only got 2 mb of video ram.
I've got a Jaton 67-P PCI video card laying around, with 4 mb ram.
The chipset on this card is Trident 9685.

I have DSL so I can download any needed software pretty quickly.

Is the hardware I've described going to work OK for a Linux newbie?

Which part(s) should I dump, if any? And replace with what?

If anyone would care to respond, please respond to Eric at

Thanks

Swift move, ex-lax.

Peltiers are stupid unless you're using the CPU at 90% or greater 100% of the
time. The moment the CPU cools to a point where condensation can occur, ZAP!

Open a tin of "Slim Fast" and you'll discover an insert asking you to write them
"your success story". While hyping up their product, they manage to distort
reality: They also exclaim that one "typical tuna sandwich" contains over 700
calories. Bollocks! The tuna sandwiches I make are legit, and are only 220
calories! So their marketing is typical American, but their product is at least
worth the fee.

It used to be that hard drives were sealed air tight (some of 'em, anyway).
These days, most of them just have a filter over the air hole. Keeps the
pollen, dust, etc. out.

If only I had something similar for my noze (ah-choo!).

No such luck for your floppy drive, though.

Subject: Suse 6.0 networking problem Help please
Date: Sat, 01 May 1999 01:16:01 GMT

Hi

Thank for taking the time to read this, maybe you can help

My problem is seeing the rest of the network world. I can ping my own
address but can't ping the router address or beyond. There are no error
message printed to screen. so It probably is working to how I
configured it but I don't know how I've configured it incorrectly.

I've include most of files and outputs listed at back of book. I've
tried to follow the Linux NET-3-HOWTO info when the original setup
didn't work.

Things that are a little different than out of the box.

1 - I'm using a matrox millenium g200 card and decided to try XiG
xserver. It works and the default window flavor seems to be KDE. Yast
appears to work but changes did seem to stick on reboot, ooorrrrr, I
didn't do something to get changes to 'stay'.

2 - so i started using command line configuration commands such as
ifconfig and route -add.

still no success.

so basically my network info for my workstation is as follows
host A.B.C.H
ISP router A.B.C.1
mask 255.255.255.0
domain S.W.home.com

eth0 card is 3com 905 10/100 # one of my concerns is that the card is
set correctly for 10Mb use

This machine is a amd k2-6 333 cpu with a lilo boot that has a win 95
option. I'm sending email from the win95 ios and network connectivity
works.

So either I've set some switch on that shouldn't be. I noticed in
.config that many things are activated that I have even addressed, maybe
there is a conflict.

My goal for this machine is to use as a workstation. If this helps.

Please tell me what else you need to trouble shoot the problem.

ifconfig shows

Under 3.3.2.3a and the Mach64 server I had all "6" buttons of my MouseMan+
working fine. xev had the wheel as 4 & 5, the wheel button as 2 and
the thumb as 6. XEmacs and a few other apps could use button 6. But now
under 3.3.3.1 and SVGA server I can't get the thumb button recognized at
all. I have the following set.

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "MouseManPlusPS/2"
    Device "/dev/psaux"
    SampleRate 133
    Resolution 200
    Buttons 6
    ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Is the mouse support server dependent or library depenedent? And why did
it change? I can't try the serial option because I have no open
serial ports.

No zap since the the water is not ionized. It is far pure than your tape
water.

Redhat 5.9 is the prerelease to 6.0, that is already on the Redhat ftp
server, and it comes with one of the new 2.2 kernels.
Cheapbytes sells a CD with 5.9 for $3 + S/H.

Subject: Help with AGP Video Cards
Date: Sat, 01 May 1999 02:53:58 GMT

I have installed linux redhat on my computer in the last couple of weeks. But
I am having trouble getting my video card to work correctly.

I have a Video Excel. Chips and Techknowlogies Intel 740 Chipset AGP card with
8MB of memory.

With X Windows I can only convince it that there is 64k or memory on my card
and then it automaticly opens up a 320x200 display which is a real pain.

I used the Chip's and Technowogies 65530 driver for linux but this does not
seem to work to well. I can't find the website for videoexcel to find a
driver, and the cd I got with the card does not have linux drivers.

It also won't regonise a RAMDAC or a clockchip.

In Windows I have to install A USB driver before I can get the card to work
properly. I don't quite understand why this is but the same might apply to
linux.

It also supports OpenGL and I would like to get that going on linux as well.

I'm very new to linux and don't know where to get the approate drivers or
maybe even how to install them. If someone could help or point me in the
right direction I would be grateful.
