The PCI version of the Web Excel uses a Rockwell HCF modem chipset.

Basically, this means that it is a Winmodem. Unless of course Connexant
(split off (?) from Rockwell) sees fit to release documentation about the
chipset and programming info freely to public.

I'm a newbie, but I did it this way. If it's on a floppy disk, then:
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cp /mnt/floppy/ the file name /the directory you want to copy it to.

Follow the sis read me instructions. I could only get one good resolution
and that was at 1280. Did anyone get the other resolutions to work on their
monitors, where you didn't lose 2" of the screen?

Don't scare me, the SCSI card is much of the reason I'm buying this model,
but I could still return it. What's so crappy about the included SCSI card?
UMAX support has not replied to my query about system requirements allowing
my 486-50, so that had been until now, my only reason for returning it.
Though I'd LOVE to get a negative/slide scanner for this kind of price ($170
Cdn).

<sarcasm on>
Oh it detects the card allright, but doesn't drive *that* card without
spending another $10 for its 'special driver', so you actually have to
spend $30 before you can supposedly get a peep out of it. There is no
'demo period' for software to drive it because you have to give them the
whole thirty bucks in order to get _that_ driver.
<sarcasm off>

Now, it may well have worked just fine, but other than making a stink
with a cancellation thru my card if it didn't work, I didn't see a way out.

Realisticly, I spent that $30 on switching the card to an SBLive! Value.
It works reasonably well with their linux drivers.

IMO, OSS needs to change their policy. Demo timeouts are just fine in
my book, but to have the 'demo' not work with a card thats available at
the whole worlds local stores just doesn't feel *right* to me. Now had
it worked without having to buy the _snake oil_ up front to find out, I'd
have gladly ponied up the money to get rid of the demo timeouts.

Your mileage, and attitude, may vary from mine, but I deal with folks
who aren't afraid to hand you the keys for a test spin.

Hello guys,
 I have dual system (linux & win98) on my hard disk.
 My serial port 1 is damage i think! because whenever i try to attach mouse
on port 1 (I mean first port) window can't detect any mouse but it can if i
reboot then attach to port 2 (second port).(Or it refer to 0 & 1?)
 So let say if the port not damage. How could i change my mouse port from
the second port to first port in linux. does it auto detect while booting?.
 If the port is damaged how could i check it in linux?
 Ok thats all

 thank you.

Subject: Save my 486... Linux and HDD controller board
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 22:59:18 +0800

I have got myself an old 486 with a 243Mb Hard drive... a great tool for
trying out Linux networking...

I created a boot disk out of the disk image provided by my Mandrake RH
6.0 CDRom... When the 486 is booted with the boot disk, the partition
check always give a bunch of error messages:

Partition Check:
hda/hda: status error: status=0x01 {error}
hda/hda: status error: status=0x04 {DiskStatuserror}
Drive not ready for command

The hard drive is connected to the 486 thru a HDD controller. The
problem seems to be stemed from the controller board. Any idea how I
would solve the problem here?

After several reboots, I decided to simply ignore the error messages...
and I finally managed to get the installation done... although after a
number of unsuccessful attempts. I could reach the logon screen after
the installation... but when I entered my username, an error message pop
up saying something like ld... (don't quite remember)... and I was
unable to enter my password. After several trials, another message pop
up staying that the system was going to stay frozen for 5 minutes...

Jimmy

I'm not sure what I didn't complete, but my X terminal session is not
allowing me to switch resolutions to higher than the standard 640x480.
I tried the Ctrl-Alt-(+/-) on my keypad (according to Linux unleashed),
but it doesn't work. I've already installed the proper i740 driver from
precisioninsight.com, but the result is still the same after selecting
the generic i740 (it's a mainboard integrated piece). I'm not even
looking for the super duper 1600x1200 resolution. 1024x768 will suit
just fine. Can someone help me?

I also use two disk to transport data, it really sucks to not be able
to get stuff off the floppies.

You can reformat the floppies with the bad sectors marked out, but do
you really trust your data on a dying disk?

#!/bin/bash
# marks bad sectors on a floppy
/usr/bin/fdformat -n /dev/fd0H1440

Hello Kai,

I use under Suse Linux 6.1 a HP 815C printer and I
think its the german vision of your 812C. With the
cdj550-driver of ghostscript the printer works
fine, also color prints looks good. But better
color image results I get with the XW-Tools - the
printed images are excellent !

If you have more questions, please ask.

So that's what I did wrong. I was trying to delete the linux, win98 and swap
partitions on one drive I had, and while fdisk saw everything to be clean(ie
just ONE partition), every time I did a formart, it kept formatting to 700
megs instead of 1.2 gigs. 700 megs was my old win98 partition, and,
consequently, win98 would not install. hmm
