There is a pretty complete set of READMEs in the 2.2 kernel
source in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound
They should tell you the defaults for your card, and the modules
that need to be loaded, and how to go about it. Several of them
have full scripts you can jump run to load the sound for
your particular card. Much easier than 2.0.*

I have an Intel system with an Adaptec ARO-1130CA-C RAIDport III controller.
I'd like to run Linux 5.2 on this system, using the existing hardware. Does
anyone know of an existing driver that is available (or in alpha or being
worked on)? Any pointers welcomed. Thanks.

Greetings,

I am about to go crazy. I am running kernel 2.2.0-pre7 and using the
Slackware distribution. I can not figure out how to print using my HP
DeskJet 500C. I have read the priniting HOW-TO(which is geared to 2.0.x
kernels), I have followed the exact instructions in Using Linux, I even
tried a program I downloaded called dj-printcap. My printer goes through
the normal booting process ok when I boot and parport does report its
existence and my lpd starts at boot time, but then nothing. Is there a
unique way to print in the latest kernel that is different from the
older 2.0.x kernels? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Barry

If you want to start using serious memory just take a look at some
combinatronics. I have an example hopefully soon that uses an
$O(n^{3p})$ entry table, with possibly multiple values per entry. Demo
and testing purposes set n=100 and p=2 with a memory estimate of 80Mb
of table (plus more for a heap, a couple of queues and the program
code itself). Serious cases are more like p=5 and n=1,000,000 or more.
(Before anyone asks I will not be relying on VM for this program, it will
have it will have its own code to swap areas to disc).

n=10^6 and p=5 has (10^6)^15=10^90 which might be tad more real memory
than you have, especialy given the p=2 and n=100 estimate. Fortunately
some restrictions, for example a fixed initial data distribution,
could limit the table size quite significantly.

Snip...

The reason you can't get the higher colour depth is because the 8bpp mode
uses a stock interface to the card and 16+bpp uses a hardware specific
interface. This driver will only access the card in this manner if the video
buffer has been overlaid into the CPU address space - which you can't do
because you've already got RAM there:)

I've been working on a driver for the CLGD5434 for about a year. I have a
486/33 with 64MB ram and I hit the same problem as you. My solution was to
start working on a repacement driver. It should be ready sometime towards the
summer if you're not in a big hurry:)

If you're interested in testing it on your 5424 let me know and I'll e-mail
you the betas in Mar/Apr. (It would be sooner but work keeps me busy;).

Cheers,
J.J.

It's entirely possible that I'm wrong (but not likely), I though that MS Windows
Kernel Toys won't work too well in Linux. Just a thought. I, or someone else here,
could have misunderstood one or another's questions or statements, though. :)

Hello, i'm new to PC hardware and i'm looking for some documentation on
the standard features of pc's (esp. 486's). A few questions that the
document(s) should answer are:

1- What features are standard on most 486's? (isa slots?, bus speeds?,
number and type of processor registers?)

2- Who made those standards and who is currently setting standards for
current pc architecture? Is it one group?, or maybe a combination of
groups? Perhaps a standards organization like ISO or ANSI?

3- An explanation of the Master,Slave,Cable Select, DS, options when
connecting drives to a 486? I'd like to know who designed this and the
motivation for providing these options. Also what is the correct way to
set up a system using these options.

You see, i've set up linux successfully but it was a largely methodical
process when it came to configuring the hardware correctly. I knew that
there were only a finite number of ways to configure the system hardware
so i proceeded through each configuration until i arrived at the first
working configuration. Needless to say this process was very
frustrating and i'd prefer to know exactly what it is that i'm doing and
why. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

If it's anything like an ISA riser, than that's a nifty little trick I
didn't know about. It sounds like a card that just has a bunch of slots
on it - for systems with small cases, where the cards would be paralell
to the motherboard rather than plugged directly into it, making the case
wider or taller (depends tower or desktop)...

Is it an option offered with the machine?
