Subject: Sound under X is skipping and popping
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 12:37:23 -0500
Hello everyone
I am trying to get my Linux workstation to do sound. I am running an
AMD K63-450, 256 meg ram, S3Virge DX 4mb graphics card, Sound Blaster
PCI 128 sound card, with the X-Free86 SVGA server.
Sound runs fine (except for the CD-ROM, but that's another issue). But,
whenever a window under X get's refreshed (I go to a new page under
netscape), moved (under enlightenment), I hear a popping or clicking
sound
on my sound card. Sometimes this occurs when I type text in a window or
move the
mouse over the window. This noise is sometimes like static, other times
it is like
running finger nails over a chalk board.
The sound files are wav's or MP3's. The distortion is less sever under
mpg123 versus X11Amp, but it is still mostly there. Does anyone have
any
idea how to fix this? Is it that the drivers for this sound card are
not that sophisticated? Is it that this is a problem for all Linux
sound
cards? Is this a problem with X?
To fix this, I have tried two things so far. 1: upgrading system from
p166 w 64meg ram to K63-450 with 256meg ram, didn't help the least.
2: was to try booting with "linux no-hlt" under lilo. It
didn't help either.
I would appreciate any pointers, posted to this newsgroup or emailed
directly to me.
Thanks!
andy

As well...the new version of Mandrake 6.1 supports the TNT2 Chipset along
with full Mesa support.
Hope this helps. Otherwise you could go to XFree86 and get their latest
version of the X-server which also has support. Mine seems to work great
with Mandrake.

It works as well with Linux as with any other OS. Other parts
(motherboard, video, sound, modem, etc.) may have Linux compatibility
issues. Find a dealer who supports Linux, or else get model numbers
for all components and plan to spend some time in Deja News.

For RH6.0, does anyone know which printer I should select when setting
up for an OfficeJet 720? None of the office jets are listed, I select
the color deskjet but I haven't tried using it yet. I expect that the
color deskjet uses the same HP PCL3 commands so the filter should work.

Thanks for the info, but your reply isn't really relevant to my comment.
The Rage-128 is still not directly supported. From the XFree86 FAQ:
http://www.xfree86.org/FAQ/#rage128
Q.F24- Does XFree86 support the ATI Rage128?
SuSE has made available a Linux binary of a Rage128 server
called XFCom_Rage128. You can get this server at the XSuSE
website. As with all previous XFCom servers, sources for this
server will be included in the next XFree86 release.

The actual colors used for each pair isn't important. What is important
is that each pair (1/2, 3/6, 4/5, 7/8) has wires that are twisted
together. And that the pairs match up on both ends, of course.
Wires that are twisted together are usually indicated via their
insulation. Twisted pairs are the same color - one solid and one
striped. Or sometimes both stripped with different thicknesses. When I
make cables, I usually follow a pattern similar to what you describe:
1 - orange stripe
2 - orange
3 - green stripe
4 - blue
5 - blue stripe
6 - green
7 - brown stripe
8 - brown

Amen, my dear. We're rather proud of the fact that we can stick a poster
on a front window that says "Warning, this house guarded by shotgun 3
nights a week. _You_ guess which 3..." without being the scandal of the
neighborhood. I can go to sleep nights knowing full well that if some
jerk wants to break in and rob, rape or otherwise raise hell, I at least
have to tools to hold his sorry ass till the fuzz can be summoned. If
he is equally armed, and we believe we are in a life ending situation,
it is quite within our rights to blow him away with those same tools.
No amount of legal mumbo-jumbo about his deprived childhood can mitigate
the fact that entering *my* home was _his_ choice, and his choice only.
How does it feel to know that since your government took away your guns,
in the past calendar year, murders are up about 3.5%, and that the
weapon of choice being an illegal gun has gone up 40%? If I were you, I
don't think I'd sleep quite as soundly. Yes Linda, we read the stats over
here too, _very_ carefully.
You'll note that I refer to a gun as a tool. Thats precisely what it
is, a tool to do what you want it to do. A gun, all by itself on the
wall or in a drawer, has never in recorded history killed anybody. It
takes consious action by someone using that tool to aim and pull the
trigger. I contend that whoevers finger is on the trigger, is 100%
responsible for the results of pulling that trigger. It was his choice,
not the tool, the tool was just doing its job.
And with that, I will end my side of this off topic exchange.
Cheers, Gene

Hello,
As an off topic aside, your work units are taking 50 hours with a PII 400?
I am running a PII 400 and processing the Seti@home work units, and am able
to complete work units in under 9 hours. Perhaps running without the GUI
(if you are doing so) would boost performance?

Yes, these types of things are know to happen with non stable kernels
(odd second digit) Solution, recompile 2.2.5.
As far as APM goes, it is a power management module. In general it is
more specific for laptops. I have a number of RH 2.2.5 boxes in my
cluster, the same one will always fail to load this kernel support too.
A little bother some to see a FAIL message but I don't think it is
anything to worry about. Even on boxes where I kill this daemon, no
effect.

I am trying to use my MS Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick in Linux. I am
running Linux-Mandrake 6.0. The joystick is connected to SBLive card. I have
installed the latest driver for SBLive ( I believe rev. 3) which is supposed
to have joystick support. The sound is working fine with the sound card.
I have compiled kernel 2.2.10 with supports for joystick as well as
sidewinder pro as module. The module joystick.o loads fine at boot-up but
not the sidewinder.o. When I try to do 'insmod sidewinder.o' I get the error
message that the resource is busy.
Any suggerstions as to what I can do?
