Subject: Can I use my ATA/100 hard drive with my ATA/66 controller motherboard?
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2001 05:15:42 GMT
Hi all,
I just purchased a new 60GB Western Digital HD. It's an ATA/100 IDE drive
and
I want to run it on my motherboards (Tyan Trinity S2380 and a Athlon 650)
ATA/66 controller - is this possible? I know an older drive can run on a
newer controller but I'm unsure about it the other way.
Also, will SuSE 7.0/7.1 Pro have a problem with it? I plan on having it set
up to have SuSE, FreeBSD, and Peanut Linux running on it to start and then I
plan on adding Slackware and Debian in a couple of months.
I guess I will be surprised if the answer is no with the backward
compatibility issue. I do have a CMD ATA/100 PCI Card but I don't believe it
has any Linux drivers at this point. At least not that I have found.
Thanks,
Mordak

Subject: PCI graphics card for linux and NT 4.0
Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 21:19:19 -0800
greetings,
I'm looking for recommendations for a PCI-based graphics card for a
couple of workstations. they both have identical hardware; one is
running NT 4.0 workstation and the other is running Red Hat 6.0.
ideally, I'd like to find a single card type that will work on either
machine. currently, both machines are using the woefully underpowered 4
MB graphics card that's built into the motherboard.
the primary use of the card will be for hi-res (1600x1200) 2D stuff -
compilers, web surfing, and that sort of thing. since I have to stare
at it all day, something with a good refresh rate is a must.
someone had suggested I look into 3dfx's Voodoo3 series, but I've been
having trouble locating docs that tell me what OSs are supported for the
various cards within that series. if it matters, I'm looking to spend
around $150 or less per card.
any suggestions?

Software raid can actually beat hardware raid in some cases where the
cpu(s) is (are) fast enough. Software raid has a strong dependency on
cpu capacity, and it sounds like your cpu's might not be up to the job
for that portion. You might consider a newer dual cpu board if you want
to keep the raid...others have stated cpu might be a part of the problem
here already. Just don't get the i840 chipset; you can find some very
inexpensive and NICE BX chipset boards out there now for PIII's that
would probably have a significant impact on the software raid, and give
room for other things to improve as well.

Subject: nvidia card and monitor despair
Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 22:27:43 -0800
I have, I think, an NVidia Vanta card, and cannot get it configured properly
for RedHat. Since I don't see the card listed by name, I have made several
mostly randome choices when choosing a card. The closest match is "STB
nvidia ...". This did not work. Does anyone know what I should choose.
My monitor is not listed either. I have a Pixie with horizontal sync is TTL
Positive/Negative and Vert. Snyc is the same. My bandwidth is 85 Mhz (-3dB)
if that helps.
I cannot get my monitor/card configured. Originally, I could see nothing by
text that is white--all other colors were rendered black. Now my text seems
to have colors, but the font is literally at about 72 font in X. The
command line seems to be OK.

Hi,
Recently I upgrade my kernel to 2.4.0. And I notice some message which
I haven't noticed before.
__alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed.
scsi::resize_dma_pool: WARNING, dma_sectors=736, wanted=49840, scaling
__alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed.
scsi::resize_dma_pool: WARNING, dma_sectors=736, wanted=37392, scaling
The message is just like the one above. And sometimes "not enough
memory" will also show up. Is there anything I can do? Tuning the kernel
parameter? I tried to look it up in the Howto and search internet page
but in vain.
Thanks for help.

You should have no problem. The HDD will just run a ATA/66 speed. I
run a ATA/66 HDD on a ATA/33 controler and have no problem. Also an
interestng side note is that, according to Anandtech.com there is all
most no speed difference between and ATA/100 and ATA/66 drives and
ATA/66 and ATA/33 drives.

Here's some Linux 3dfx links.
http://linux.3dfx.com/
http://www.gamers.org/dEngine/xf3D/howto/3Dfx-HOWTO.html
For what it's worth, I have an nVidia 32MB AGP card and it was supported
fine under SuSE 7.0 with the 2.2.16 Kernel.
There's also a 3dfx news group for linux as well: 3dfx.glide.linux
I also have an expensive VooDoo 5500 AGP 64MB and it too has special
drivers. It was however, a pain to set up.
Good luck,
Mordak
P.S. The nVidia card was $129.95 at CompUSA 4 months ago probably nearer to
$100.00 now.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas that could help me out of a jam.
I'm running RH 7.0 on a 900Mhz Athalon with 512MB of ram and I'm trying to
get my new RME hammerfall sound card to run with the newest alsa driver --
0.5.10b. Everything compiles, the driver loads, and aplay appears to play
soundfiles, BUT there is no sound output. I know the card hardware works
because I have recently used it under windows NT.
In trying to diagnose the problem, I found that my SCSI controller card is
using the same IRQ as the hammerfall. This happens no matter how I set up
the IRQs assigned by BIOS. If the hammerfall gets IRQ 9, then so does the
SCSI card etc.
Any ideas as to why I'm getting no sound?
Any thoughts on the IRQ conflicts?
Many thanks in advance -

What card? What are you talking about???? Laptops don't have "cards" in
the same way as desktops do. They have pcmcia sockets or cardbus
sockets. You need to install pcmcia drivers, and pcmcia tools, and so
on. Then you need to teach the system about your card if its not in the
database (it will be .. I have plenty of 3com pcmcia cards).

Doesn't work. Never "recognized" my 3c589. Was a thinkpad too! The
wizard was very helpful, but entirely wrong and most frustrating. After
three days of circles in windows, I finallyrealized that it was
speaking crap, ignored it, set irq and ioport the way I thought
it should be, having seen the linux data, and all worked. The wizard
was trying to set the card irq to the same irq that the pcmcia
controller was using.

I currently use an ATA 100 HDD on ATA66 controller and RedHat 7.0. It works
fine.
About performance I can only say that I tried ATA66 and ATA100 running Windows
and I DID notice higher speed on ATA100. ( I think Windows sees ATA100 as SCSI,
by the way ).
