Dear all,
Is iso9660 the only file system that i can use to moun the cdrom?
Because I got a cd which show wrong case filename in linux(using
iso9660), not correct(I am not sure about this) in windows95.

Are you _sure_ that lpd is running. I got the same error when lpd was
not running. execute `ps ax | grep lpd` and make sure there is an entry
for lpd (not "grep lpd"). If not, that is probably your problem.

Hello Mark,
Sorry to tell you this, but that printer is (dramatic music) a winprinter.
This is to say, it doesn't know how to print, and relies on
closed-software drivers that lexmark provides for windows only to figure
out what to print. As it doesn't understand any of the standard languages
in hardware (again, windows driver do that for the little sucker), it is
unlikely that there even is a ghostscript driver for it.
Sorry for the bad news.

One question, WHY?
BTW N64 usues MIPS chips and those aren't very well supported. IE: the
MIPS code of the kernel is one of the least developed.

The P2B-LS is working fine for me.
I have no problems with SCSI (several internal and external fast SCSI devic=
es
and an UW hard disk).
The 82258 works with the Ethernet Express Pro 100 driver (the one which is
on by default in the kernel config)
An although I have the 1.02 revision of the board (which is reported to hav=
e
problems, random lockups ...) it works without glitches even with an overcl=

Celeron 300 at 450MHz (ok, after adjusting to 2.2. Volt).

Of course, one could almost ALWAYS do a
'man mount' or 'mount -help' or 'man -?' to see
if other formats are supported. Or if one was really
masochistic, one might try 'strings mount | more' to
see what other goodies are "hidden" within the
mount binary.

I need to thank everyone who hs offered me help with installing linux on
my T4800CT, I think I finally figured out what's wrong.
I got slackware to boot, but it cannot build a ramdisk, which is what
Debian and RH try to do automatically, my laptop has extra ram in pcmia
form in a memory expansion slot. This may be acting weird. I'm going to
take it out and try.
Is there any utility for making ext2 partitions through dos (and where,
can't find one on metalab)
I'm also going to try (sinc eit has no CD) zipping my copy of partition
magic, transporting it via disk, and making an ext2 that way, then using
loadlin to boot a debian or RH floppy
For thsoe who are new to thsi thread- I have been trying to install
Debian or RedHat Linux onto my T4800CT for two weeks now and have been
having a number of problems.
I read the 4800CT 'howto' but it didn't address any of my problems
I cannot boot off of any floppy, I have tried RedHat 5.2, 5.0 and Debian
2.0 and 2.1, tecra and regular Everyone comes up with the same message :
Boot Failed
Thanks,

Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 00:13:49 -0700
I'm trying to figure out if this command is trivial, vital, dangerous or
negligible.
I recompiled my kernel some weeks ago, following the directions for a
comparable system (Toshiba 330 CDS) at the Linux for Laptops page and the
HOWTO for making the kernel ready to talk to a ZIP drive (which I mean to
get real soon now..)
Anyway, I was going back through my RedHat 5.2 manual and I noticed
something I somehow skipped over before. The manual claims "an initrd image
is needed for loading your SCSI module at boot time." It recommends I run
/sbin/mkinitrd to build a 'proper initrd image.' However, it does *not*
tell me how to back up the old image if I screw up. As a newbie, I am
reluctant to do anything without a list of instructions for undoing it.
I plan to be getting the parallel port Zip drive which requires the imm
adapter. I double-checked what I did for my kernel vs. the new HOWTO at
http://njtcom.com/dansie/zip-drive.html. However, I saw no instruction for
running /sbin/initrd in there.
When I reboot, SCSI support seems to be initializing happily even though no
devices are found.
So is anyone familiar with these issues who can set me straight? Thanks in
advance.

Hi,
I'm running linux 2.2.1 on an etower 266 and have no problems so far.
For X I'm running the SVGA server (version 3.3.3) which works fine at
16bpp. I think there should be some support for the ATI Rage AGP but I
haven't tried yet. Sound works fine with the Crystal driver and I have no
problems with printing.
I installed a PCI ethernet card which works fine so far. I didn't have to
touch BIOS settings.
The only thing that does not work is the INITIO SCSI card. But this is not a
hardware problem. Any help, hints or tips appreciated there!
And, oh yes, the modem is a winmodem. I've got one for sale now ;-)

I have experience with one 333 and three 300.
I had Signal-11 problems with the 333 - it was the RAM. The cpu was okay - and
still is - works great.
I had Signal-11, kernel crashes, etc, with the 300. I got new processors and it
fixed the problem.
The man at the shop recently told me that there is two types of k6-2 : some to
work with a 66 Mhz bus, and some to work with a 100 Mhz bus (or 95 Mhz for the 333
for example) ; the problems I had with his 300's were because he thought there
were designed for 100 Mhz bus but did not check when receiving the cpu.
My conclusion : AMD k6-2 work just great.

Subject: Alternative Linux hardware
Hello folks,
I've been happily running Linux on my Intel clone box for quite a while
now, but it is aging and I'm thinking about moving on to newer, better
hardware. For one reason or another, I got to thinking that it would be
particularly cool to be running Linux, an `alternative' OS, on
`alternative' hardware.
Now, I realise that besides Intel (and Intel clone) hardware, that there
are at least three other major architectures out there: UltraSPARC,
Alpha, and Power PC. However, I am having a hard time tracking down
information from the vendors of said hardware that doesn't have a very
high marketese index. So, I'm going to ask for advice from you fantastic
Linux users out there.
Which of those non-Intel hardware platforms would be the most
interesting run/hack Linux on? I'm getting especially curious about 64
bit architectures since they don't seem too far away from being in
common use.
If at all possible, please follow up to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks a bundle in advance,

Had a similar problem. With suse you must use 4front tech sound files for your
card. They should be on your install cd under sound. Make sure you recompile your
kernel with no sound. Then add the sound files. Read the readmes on how to setup
automatic sound through boot up. Then you can use Realplayer with no problems.

There's not much help on SCSI tape drives, because it is so simple.
The "mt" command and the scsi controller driver is about all that
is involved. The "mt" command has more commands than your drive
will support, but that is not a problem, except that you're never
sure which options will work until you try them. But your command
should have worked, I think.
I'm guessing your controller and controller driver SW are not
getting along. I don't know what to suggest, except maybe upgrading
your kernel and driver. If you've got the time, you can turn on
higher levels of SCSI debugging logging when you build the kernel
and gather info for a bug report. See the kernel files for the
maintainer.
Oh, be sure you've got your cabling and "termination" situation
correct. This is a MAJOR source of SCSI problems.
