Yes, absolutely. If you can put that info on a web page, it will be
even better. In the linux world, we all benefit from somebody else's
previous work.

I sure hope someone can help me out with this.

I am lucky enough to have a really nice scsi tape drive a seagate stt220000N.

http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/tapesales/marketing/detail/0,1122,100,00.html

its a nice 20 gig travan. I can get my machine to see it just fine and Kudzu jumped

up and said it saw it, set it to /dev/st0 ~/dev/tape. however the problem is, any
time i

try to write anything to it, it goes about a consistant 333k then wants a new tape??

i have tried them all "dump" "BRU" even *icckk* "Kdat" they all do the same.. so im
thinking,

config error. but WHAT? anyone have any ideas where i should start? and if you can
help, please be

as specific as possible.

i do have the mt-st package installed, mt operations are fine. however stinit tells me
"no working

config file found" and i have -NO- idea were to start on that one.

thanks in advance for ANY help.

I looked into the source for the SVGA driver and there are references to
the Rage 128 Pro.
scanpci turns up a device code 0x5046 which is defined in vgaPCI.h as
PCI_CHIP_RAGE128PF but the xserver see a strange device - something like
0x3f3f0000 - and quits.

Where have you been looking, then? Seems like this group gets lots of
posts wondering about which Athlon mobo to get and success stories from
many people... Anyway, I've been running SuSE on an AMD K6-2 400 for the
last 10 months and had no processor-related problems. If it's i386
compatible, like almost all AMD chips, it should work with any distro of
Linux.

Hello,

I am teaching Linux at a local university. We have 16 IBM Thinkpad laptops
that are of various types (750, 755, 360, etc.). The issue I have are with
the
755C* flavors (C, Cs, Cx). These all have the inverted bit problem that
are well known with the Thinkpads. The problem I have having is that only
the Cs are reacting to the floppy=thinkpad option at boot! So the problems
are still occurring with the C and Cx. Does anyone have any ideas on what
to try next? Is it debugging time? Who wrote the original Thinkpad option
and can we leverage some help there? Ideas? I know, I know, start digging
into the code! That is the next option. Thanks for all help!

its a toss-up. I have both, as well. but the tyan has the heatsink

Shouldn't really matter, I think. I'd do something like this:
/dev/hda1 4G FAT32 C:
/dev/hda2 20M ext2 /boot
/dev/hda3 9G [extended]
/dev/hda5 4G FAT32 D:
/dev/hda6 128M swap
/dev/hda7 500M ext2 /var
/dev/hda8 2.5G ext2 /home
/dev/hda9 1.4G ext2 /usr
/dev/hda10 1G ext2 /

Use DOS FDISK to make one 4G Fat32 partition at the beginning of the disk
and create an extended partition. Leave a little space (1-2 cylinders)
between the end of the first partition and the beginning of the extended
partition. Then install WIn98 on C: . Then start the Linux install, and
use Linux fdisk to put /boot and D: and everything else on. That should
work well...

I had a similar problem with 2 SMC isa cards. To remedy the problem,
I booted with a dos disk and ran the diagnostic floppy that came with
the cards. Using that, I turned PnP off on both cards and manually
assigned then irq's and io's with the diagnostic software. Now they
are always detected by Linux. BTW, Linux will assign them eth0 and
eth1 based on their MAC addresses, with eth0 being the lower one.

Got that right. From personal experience and what I've heard, FIC, Epox,
Asus, and Abit make decent Super 7 boards. Just don't buy the ones with
integrated video (ecch!) and it's also a not a good idea to buy the very
cheapest board you find. Many fewer problems with 1 or 2 steps up, and
the board often has more cache and/or more slots for stuff.

CUrrently running an AMD K6-2 400 on an Epox MVP3G2 (VIA MVP3 chipset, 1M
L2 cache, 1 ISA, 1 ISA/PCI, 3 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM, supports Socket 7 CPUs
at 66 or 100 MHz FSB up to 500MHz, 2 serial, 1 parallel, 2 USB, PS/2
stuff, ATX.) Stable as a rock even under heavy CPU load+maxing the
10baseT+lots of disk I/O. I believe you can get one for about $85. Some
people have had odd problems with the MVP3 chipset, though, so YMMV!

Read the man page for hdparm, paying close attention to the -S and -y

sndconfig, cat /proc/pci (if it's a PCI card or one of those onboard
sound devices they stick into new machines), lsmod (if the sound works
and is loaded as a module, it will show up in that list), pnpdump (if it's

No way to tell for sure until you know exactly what kind of sound card you
have. What do "wavrec" or similar recording tools do when you plug in the
mike, talk into it, and start recording?

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: ,,\/,,.SAY A PRAYER FOR THE INNOCENT VICTIMS OF BLACK VIOLENCE AND
LAWLESSNESS!..,,`
Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 04:01:54 GMT

It's interesting to see how selective the black community can be when it comes to what
they get outraged about.
-
A couple of recent examples:
-
1) A four-year-old white boy was dragged 4 miles to his death by a black man when the
automobile his mother was driving got car-jacked. The child was attached to a
seatbelt, hanging out the side of the car, clearly visible to the perpetrator. The
mother frantically pleaded for the life of her son to no avail. Some other motorists
watching this horror unveil eventually subdued the driver. According to bystanders and
police, the man was completely remorseless.
-
Tell me something... How is this man any less of an animal than the 3 rednecks that
dragged a black man to his death behind a pickup truck last year? So, where is all the
public outrage and cries of racism here?
-
2) Yesterday, a black man went on a firing rampage, shooting 5 white people - killing
2 and leaving 1 in critical condition with a bullet lodged in his brain. When asked
why he did it, he told a neighbor and police that he just wanted to kill as many white
people as he could. Again, completely remorseless.
-
Again, where is all the public outrage and cries of racism here?
-
Whenever incidents of this type occur, there is a defining silence coming from the
black community. The double standard that seems to apply, suggests that it's OK for
black criminals to victimize whites but not the other way around and has led to a well
deserved lack of credibility for black's when it comes to criminal justice.
-
Americans (law-abiding blacks and whites alike) have finally decided not to allow this
double standard and racial bias to infect the judicial system any further and this was
at the rudiment of the judge's decision to move the Diallo trial out of The Bronx.
-
And since no discussion on this subject would be complete without a comment on the
Diallo verdict;
-
For the record, I didn't agree with this verdict. At a minimum, I think these cops
should have been charged with extreme reckless indifference to human life and they
should have been punished.
-
This was not murder however... It was incompetence... If these cops set out to murder
this guy, then would have done it quietly in a back alley or other such place and they
would have quietly gotten away with it.
-
The real culprit here is the culture of young, black, African American males, which
engender an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness wherever they congregate!
-
These neighborhoods to which the NYPD Street Crimes Unit are assigned, are some of the
most dangerous in New York City. Kids pull handguns on cops all the time and many
policemen have been shot, killed and maimed.
-&
In this highly charged, hair-trigger environment, no cop is going to risk his or her
life if he or she believes someone is about to pull out a gun.
-
No degree of sensitivity training, weapons regulations, political pressure, threats,
