Subject: USB Zip disk under Linux 2.2.18? Can't get it to work
Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 04:38:51 GMT

Hello,

As the subject says, I'm trying to get a USB Iomega Zip 100 drive
working. Here is the setup:

IBM Thinkpad 600X, RedHat 6.2 with kernel upgrade to 2.2.18.

I believe I've followed the correct procedures for setting
up the kernel: modular SCSI support, modular SCSI disk support,
modular USB everything (including mass storage)... I have the
usbdevfs mounted, too.

I'm not sure if I'm loading modules correctly. Following someone's
tips on the Linux USB web page, I did this:

   % insmod scsi_mod
   % insmod sd_mod
   # usbcore - already loaded on boot to have usbdevfs automounted
% insmod usb-uhci # or just the uhci module - it doesn't matter
   % insmod usb-storage

There were no complaints until I got to usb-storage. See below for
messages appearing in the system log. So the problem is that neither
fdisk nor mount recognize the drive:

   % fdisk /dev/sda
   Unable to open /dev/sda

   % mount -t msdos /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
mount: /dev/sda4 is not a valid block device

Any ideas? What's going on? Please someone send me a kernel config
file, /etc/conf.modules file, and maybe the messages in the system log
when the module is loaded. I hope I am not required to upgrade to 2.4.

Thanks for the help,

Charles Wright

Hmm. I think no, for adding lines in modules.conf. You have to modprobe them
instead, because insmod doesn't read modules.conf.

Does X think you have a serial mouse? Check mouse settings in XF86Config.

Dear Linux Hackers,

I've got a motherboard (A7M266) but the VIA disk controller is flakey
(DMA timeouts, etc). Yes, I've tried loading the patches, but it still
fails when DMA is enabled...

I disabled the onboard IDE and put my main disk on a Promise Ultra66
controller. Problem is, I can't get this to boot!

Does anyone know what options (in lilo.conf) I can use to get this
to boot?

Thanks,
  Richard

You must still have the IDE driver compiled in the kernel which claims
the CD-Writer before ide-scsi claims it, which is why you see it as
/dev/hdc. You need to compile the kernel without IDE driver and compile
IDE driver as a module. If you do need to load the IDE driver later,
tell it to ignore your CD-Writer in your modules.conf file. All of this
has been explained in CD-Writing HOWTO.

Subject: Shared IRQ problem?
Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 23:48:00 -0800

     My problem is this:
I am running Red Hat 7 currently (I just upgraded from 6.2 last
week). The platform is and Intel 233 MMX CPU running on an Intel VX98
motherboard with 128MB of RAM. The modem is a Zoom 2919 56k flex modem,
although I have tried several other modems only to have the same
problem. (The Zoom modem does work fine under Linux in different
boxes). The problem is this: The modem will only work if the mouse is
moving. Thus, if I want to surf, send or receive files, I have to keep
the mouse slowly moving back and forth. (There is no serial mouse port
on the board, so I have to use a serial mouse.) The mouse is a serial
mouse under ttyS0 (COM 1). The modem is under ttyS2(COM3). So I moved
the serial mouse to ttyS1 (COM2), at which point the modem would not
even respond at all (yes I reassigned the mouse to the new port). I
moved the mouse back to ttyS0, and I still have the original problem. I
was thinking I would move the modem to a different slot, but no matter
which slot I move the modem to, it still shows up as being on ttyS2
(this holds true under DOS too, yet there is no IRQ problem under DOS).
When
Red Hat is loading, I have noticed a message: "Serial Driver 4.27
withMany_Ports_Sharing_Mulitiple_IRQ enabled". Right now this is where
I am at...Currently, anything of any size that I want to download, I
boot into Windows, download it, then I boot back into Linux, and access
the Windows partition. So if you have any insight into any fix I can
try to solve my problem, it would be appreciated.

Guillemot Corporation (Hercules) has an alternative to the
Creative Live Drive, but it's not necessarily a need. It does give you
front face plate access to a whole ton of audio ports if you need that
type of thing. The problem with the Hercules unit is that I'm not sure
how long it'll be before someone releases Linux drivers for it, I'm
not even sure who manufactures the chipset for the thing.
As far as high quality cheap cards go, you could shoot for a
Creative PCI 512. It uses the emu10k1 chip, the same one the Live
uses, though the actual Live cards now have Dolby Digital Surround
sound, so I think the might have switched to a new revision. What the
512 lacks is the software that comes with the Live soundcards, but I
have compiled and used the emu10k1 module on 4 different computers,
all using PCI 512's, and they've all worked fine.

<OT>
That's because it is running there. I think you'll find that OS/2
really does run Windows, not emulate it. There are several versions of
OS/2, some come with an embedded copy of Windows supplied by IBM and
others make runtime patches to the copy of Win3.1 on your hard disk
and run it that way. The patches hit the memory management and DPMI
code and route calls through to the OS/2 memory manager instead of the
Win3.1 one. As far as Windows is concerned, it's actually running.
