Subject: 3com 59x at 100Mbit?
Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 17:21:50 GMT
Greetings,
I have a Vortex 10/100 card connected to my 10/100 hub. According to the
lights on the hub, all my windows computers are connected at 100Mbit.
But my linux (redhat 5.2) box is connecting at 10Mbit.
I've read the pages at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
But they make no sense to me.
It seems that maybe I need to apply the patch, but am not sure about the
warnings on that page:
"Note: this patch may not work with earlier 1.2.* kernels and will not
work with kernel sources patched for ELF compiler support (e.g. the
kernel sources packaged with RedHat or Slackware) or the 1.3 development
kernels. In those cases you should apply the patches by hand or use the
modules support in the updated Vortex driver."
And, I don't even know if applying the patch is what I need.
I have the kernel sources installed
I downloaded the driver source code to the directory
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks,
hampton

While it's true that another cross-platform, relatively
OS agnostic and subsequent standard does have some promise.
Those relative benefits are not at all present in either
ISA or PCI solutions with or without the need for anti-
castration drivers. A dedicated PCI solution for this
purpose is still a waste of a perfectly good and LIMITED
IRQ and ISA is just ISA.
At least USB avoids the dual problems of running out of IRQ's
or dealing with ISA-PnP or not dealing with ISA-PnP for com3
or above.

Well, it won't cache the 2nd 64MB of RAM, since it doesn't have enough tagram,
but if it has the proper voltage settings, it should do the K6-2 (my TX board
doesn't have the proper voltage settings).

A while ago someone with a stereo bt848 card posted what chip it used for
sound, and I downloaded the spec sheets for it and wrote code (that worked!)
to enable stereo for the card in around an hour. The sound hardware on bt848
cards isn't all the same, and the bt878 has builtin sound, but no fancy
patented algorithms are needed to decode the stereo, it's just a matter of
setting up the chips on the card.

I have a 1Gb IBM SCSI running on one of my older Linux machines fine. It
was in need of some more space so I picked up a reasonably recent 4Gb
Quantam viking, set the address to id1 and plugged in ready to go. The
Adaptec BIOS picks it up fine and sets it to D: and then on Linux boot-up
the following error comes up.
I have tried changing it's address and a few jumper settings, and running it
without the other disk but I am having no luck.
The Adaptec card is an AHA1542.
Can anybody offer me any ideas?

Subject: Re: Creating my own bootable, installable cd
Date: 10 Feb 1999 06:55:03 GMT
Here are the basic steps:
Run mkisofs which creates a CD/iso9660 fs image
mkisofs does useful things like putting boot blocks and the like
onto the right place on the iso file image. It can also do rockridge
extentions so you can have long filenames and the like.
use your favorite software to burn this onto a cd
Below is a shell script wrapper to mkisofs that is found on most
freebsd systems at /usr/share/examples/worm/makecdfs.sh:
#!/bin/sh
#
# usage: makecdfs [-b] "cd title" input-tree output-file "copyright string"
#
# For example:
#
# makecdfs FreeBSD-2.1.5 /a/cdrom-dist /a/cdimage.cd0 "Walnut Creek CDROM \
# 1-510-674-0783 FAX 1-510-674-0821"
if [ "$1" = "-b" ]; then
bootable="-b floppies/boot.flp -c floppies/boot.catalog"
shift
else
bootable=""
fi
if [ $# -lt 4 ]; then
echo "usage: $0 \"cd-title\" input-tree output-file \"copyright\""
elif [ ! -d $2 ]; then
echo "$0: $2 is not a directory tree."
else
title="$1"; shift
tree=$1; shift
outfile=$1; shift
copyright="$*"
mkisofs $bootable -a -d -N -D -R -T -V "$title" -P "$copyright" -o $outfile
$tree
fi
It's been a while since I have had to do this so I forgot what is
required from the burning software but mkisofs is source-code available
and builds on just about every unix I have seen. The input-tree
should be something like /export/FreeBSD/2.2.8-RELEASE/ or something.
You may also want to add the -f flag to your invocation of mkisofs
so that symlinks will get followed and you will get real files in
your iso9600 fs image and not symlnks pointing to nowhere.
Hope this helps.

I have Sound Blaster 16 PnP. It uses Vibra16VX chip. Many people have had
unsuccessful story about this card. And I had spent countless night trying
installing it.
If you have Linux kernel 2.0.36 or lower, don't bother with isapnp tool or
trying to build the sound support to the kernel. You will just waste your time
as I did.
In my case, I downloaded the latest Linux kernel 2.2.1 from
ftp://ftp.kernel.org or ftp://ftp.id.kernel.org.
I compiled and built it with sound support. Next thing was I could play sound
(*.wav), midi (*.mid) and played CD Audio from Linux!
I love Linux. I wish I could find driver for my AcerScan 310P so that I could
delete Windoze partition forever!

i have a fujitsu mo drive (external scsi connected to an adaptec 1460
pcmcia scsi adapter) that i'm trying to use for storage and backups.
unfortunately, i'm finding that as it is now, the thing is just not
reliable enough for either purpose. for example, when i untar
something in an mo disc's file system, tar usually quits with errors.
trying to get a table of contents file from a tar or afio archive on
an mo disc usually hangs the machine, as does trying to fsck one of
these things after an error. i'm running 2.0.36 with the 2048 block
size patch, but i'm running into the same problem with the old 230 mb
discs. i'm also getting messages like this in my syslog:

Hello,
I am trying to use xcdcoast with an ATAPI cdrom rw. When I start it, it
says "No generic scsi support found". I have recompiled the kernel with
"Generic SCSI Support", placed it in /boot, updated /etc/lilo.conf and

plus, /proc/devices has no "21 sg" listed.
I have a K6-2 333, MVP3 mobo, RedHat 5.2 upgraded to 2.21 kernel.
Thanks in advance for all the priceless help!

I was dissapointed to discover this also.. as the card is fantastic in 95/98..
but is not supported under NT or Linux. Get yourself a cheap Creative
SoundBlaster 16 card and you will have not problems under Linux. These cards
are inexpensive and work without problems... more than I can say for the
Monster card at least.

I would suggest to use SCSI emulation switched on and try to use your CD writer as
SCSI device. I have used HP 7100 and 7200 this way, but I don't know what is your
model.
To do so you have to use the new set of kernels (2.2.x or 2.1.x), which are still
experimental. I'm not sure about the 2.0.3x kernels if their SCSI emulation works
properly!
Have fun!

You may have a monitor that is NOT multisync. That is, it won't
accept anything but the exact vertical and horizontal clock rates
it is expecting.
If there is no other identifying number than #550D (I don't recognise
that one, but that's not saying much) try this:
CAREFULY, open the case and see if theres any names and/or numbers
inside. Make sure it isn't plugged in and even then BE CAREFUL!
Caps inside monitors can hold lethal charges for days!

Hi,
I'm trying to use my HP Colorado 5GB with the 2.0.36 kernel and BRU
2000, however, I keep getting errors from BRU after creating a backup
saying that it can't find a tape header. Apparently, the company says
that it is due to a bug in the tape driver in the kernel. So, I would
like to know if there is a newer driver than what comes in the 2.0.36
kernel that I can install and use, and that (hopefully) fixed this
"bug".
Thanks,
Lyle Taylor
P.S. Does 2.2.1 use a different or newer ide driver?
