Subject: Anyone using a Viewsonic PT795 Monitor?
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 18:17:16 GMT
My Viewsonic PT795's mainboard broke, so I sent
it back and got a replacement monitor. This one seems
to have the same problem (screens blanks out suddenly with a click,
progressively gets worse over about 1 year's time until monitor
unusable).
I run Linux with X11. I tried 2 different graphics cards because at
first
I thought the card was the problem.
I'm wondering if Linux is destroying this monitor, so I'm searching for
someone else who uses it and has had similar problems or good luck. I
really
think the monitor just has a flawed mainboard (and Viewsonic probably
knows
it) but I wanted to check here. The monitor has good specs and is
fairly
high-end. 30-110 kHz horizontal, 50-180 Hz vert. Capable of 1280x1024
@ 101 Hz, but
I run Linux at only 1280x1024 @ 85 Hz. I'm wondering if some hardware
probing
code in the RedHat install procedure is destroying this monitor.

PCMCIA Card Services v3.1.8 shipped with RedHat 6.2 will not work with
this card.
This may be untrue for other variants of this card, however, following
instructions found at the distribution site for pcmcia-cs, upgrading to
pcmcia-cs-3.1.24 will correct issues regarding this card.

Subject: 2.4.2 and VooDoo3
Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2001 12:04:40 -0600
I have a 1998 Gateway PC with an on-motherboard graphics device and a
Voodoo 3 PCI board. In the bios, I set the PC to use the Voodoo card and
ignore the onboard device. Mandrake 7.2 works fine with the voodoo, but
I am attempting to use a new 2.4.2 kernel (for a TV tuner card.)
The machine boots properly, except that it does not use the voodoo
device (i.e. I see a blank screen.) Also, xwindows runs properly, that
is, I can specify a default run level 5 and do useful stuff, except I
cannot work at the console level.
When I installed the new kernel, I also copied the new SYSTEM.MAP file.
How do I get the new boot image to use the voodoo device? My LILO.conf
file contains the same options for this kernel as the Mandrake 7.2 one.
A related problem is that sound with the new kernel is very faint,
unlike with the 2.2.17 kernel that came with Mandrake 7.2. I use the
ensoniques 1371 driver.
Thank you for your help.

Hello,
If you have compiled onstream support and
the module osst.o exists, you can user your
normal backup software.
All you have to do is add -b 64 (blocksize =32k)
for example:
tar cvf /dev/osst0 * -b 64 saves everything
If you have the programm buffer installed (i think it is
in ap under Suse) alternatively to have it smoother:
tar cvf - / | buffer -s 32k -m 24 M -B -t -o /dev/oost0
to restore
buffer -s 32k -m 8M -B -t -i /dev/osst0 | tar xvf -C /
Good luck

This is why they make the industrial 'enclosures' and terminals that are
designed to protect the computer from the environment. I worked at a
steel mill as a motor control tech, and every computer that wasn't
inside an air-conditioned room was in a shielded enclosure to provide
EMI protection, plus had filtered air, since there was literally steel
dust and what not glittering in the air constantly -- not good for the
guts of a PC. Additionally, they make special terminals that have the
membrane type keyboards and either joystick or arrow button controlled
mice. The downside? They are definitely not cheap. But then, neither
is downtime on the production line because a commodity off-the-shelf
monitor or keyboard just failed.

I've had no luck mounting my Zip100 under RH6 with kernel 2.2.14-5.0.
At start up it says that my Iomega Zip is linked to /dev/hdd.
I make a directory /mnt/zip.
When I enter:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdd /zip
I get:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd,
or too many mounted file systems
I've tried this with couple of PC100 disks with no success. I've read all
the how-to's and can't get beyond this point.
Any thought on what I could be doing wrong?

I'm reading up on setting up linux, and it states that many will setup
separate partitions for /usr and /home besides ones swap space. I would
like to ask you how you usually setup your partitioning. I was a little bit
confused on it, for you at least need a mounting point of root. This is how
I did it, but I'm not sure if it's how it should be done. I set one
partition for about 3/4 of the drive as '/'. I thought that would cover my
separate partition for /usr as well as the mount point. My second partition
and about 1/4 of the drive (not all, as the last is for swap) I set as mount
point /home. Then of course the remaining 256 megs I set for swap.
At first I was going to create a 7 meg partition just for mounting root,
then the larger 3/4 approx for /usr, and then the last primary for /home but
I thought it just made more sense to make just a / and /home partition.
Maybe I'm just not thinking about this correctly. Any suggestions would be
appreciated!

Well, sometimes one can argue on how to approach this partitioning. I'll
just show you how I do it. From your posting, your drive must be 1GB in
size. It's a bit small for a full install of LM-7.2
Let's just say you had a HD of sufficient size: I'll break it up into the
following partitions. Also I tend to do it in this order with hda5 being
"/boot" and Swap being hda13:
/boot - 0.1GB
/usr - 3GB (2.6gig minimum for full LM-7.2 install)
/usr/local - 0.5GB (dependant on quantity of non-LM installs)
/usr/src - 0.2GB (higher if U like playing w/ the Kernel)
/var - 0.5GB
/tmp - 0.5GB (should be more if Taper b/u huge files)
/ - 0.2GB (only for /root & SuperUser)
/home - Whatever remains of your HD
+swap - 0.5GB (higher for heavy Gimp usage & low RAM)
But since you have a 1GB drive, at least have one of the partitions being
/home because that's where your personal settings will reside. And as long
as you don't format the /home partition on a subsequent install, you keep
your settings.

If this controller is on a unique major drive number in /dev, then LILO will
require modification before it will recognize the controller.
One new controller was added to the latest version of LILO (21.7) by a
contributor. Offhand, I don't remember which controller it was, but it is

Subject: Re: Linux partitioning question

I have never agreed with the suggested partitioning scheme in most
install docs for Linux, at least not for the home user. I usually set up
with 3 partitions on my machine. One for windoze because I dual
boot, one for Linux swap, and one for Linux. Why confuse the issue?!!?
Why do I want to guess how much I will need for /home and /usr when
I can just lump them together in one big partition and use all my
space as efficiently as possible.
You might hear some nonsense about the system running faster with
the ten-gillion partition setup because it checks over the file system at
bootup and a few other reasons. My experience has been that having
one big partition doesn't hurt anything. I've also heard that multiple
partitions make updating easier. I don't know about that for sure. Usually
when I update I format the whole drive and start over anyway, or get a new
machine, or whatever. Even so, I'm guessing Linux is smart enough to
do a proper update when you don't use the traditional partition setup.
Well, that's my 2 cents. If I weren't dual booting with windoze (and I'm
starting
to wonder why I even bother) my machine would only have 2 partitions.
One for Linux swap and one for Linux.
