Hi,

I have the original HP PhotoSmart digital camera, but there doesn't seem
to be any support under Linux for it. Is anyone aware of compatible
software? Or what chipset it uses for alternatives?

Trying to get X started on a Cirrus 5428 chip (1 MB RAM) in an ICL
ErgoPRO D4/66. I've tried more or less all of the combinations at
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.2/cirrus5.html. Does anyone have this system
working ?

Modem set up on com 3 under windows, ttyS2 under Open Linux when using KPPP
under Open Linux, I get message "modem is busy" when I click on "Query
Modem". What can I do to get this modem set up correctly? It is NOT a
winmodem to the best of my knowlege.

Interesting post. I would really like to know how you deduced that Windows
"wiped your bios". I have installed Windows many times on many different
machines and I am sorry, but not once has an installation come close to what
you have described. In short, to quote you in a recent post: "What crap."

I recompiled my kernel and force loaded the new Sound Blaster Live driver
from creative as a module using insmod -f sblive.o. It works beautifully.
My problem is that I have the 2.2.5-15 kernel that comes with Red Hat 6.0
and the driver was compiled for 2.2.5. On startup it gives me an error
about incompatible versions when it is finding module dependencies and
loading modules. How can I make this work? I don't want to manually load it
every time I start up.

Yeah, I have the similar situation now and am evaluating some solutions
now. The solution that I'm looking at right now is to setup Samba on
both Linux box and mount the Windows 98 partiton via network and then
create a cron job so that every midnight these two Linux box would
create a image (sort of like Norton Ghost or something, or simply using
tar, but not sure how to do this YET) and then dump this image to the
Win98 partition. While on the Win98 side it will have another cron job
(using scheduler) that would burn the linux image onto the CDRW.
I think this is doable, but not sure how complicated the setting would
be (I'm kinda new to Linux) and I don't have the details YET.. But if
this could be done, then you are talking about a US$160 Mitsumi CDRW
drive plus a CDRW media for 2 bucks, very cheap solution!!! WOW!
(nah, who need the noisy tape backup??)
Anyone here every done this before? could you please share with us for
the details??

That's quite a good explanation. Thanks.

Amazingly, there were no error/warning messages!
I've used the 'Modemtool' under X's Control panel to make that link between
/dev/modem and /dev/ttyS0. Then used 'setserial /dev/ttyS0 autoconfig -v' to
check the ttyS0 settings. It reported "dev/ttyS0, UART:16550A, Port: 0x03f8,
IRQ: 4". Everything appeared normal.

In 'minicom' I've tried many different combinations of init strings for
modem, but it simply refused to initialise. I never saw and "OK". But it was
sensing incoming calls, and prompted 'RING' at the 'minicom' terminal,
whenever there was one.
Any way, after two days, I gave up and tried ttyS1, and without much
problems I can connect to my ISP now.
Looking at /proc/interrupts did not give me any clue about any conflicting
irq settings!

With some help, I think I'll be able to figure out what went wrong with
ttyS0.
Your expert comments are much appreciated.

Joshy.

I'm putting together an overclocked dual-celeron system.

Is there a program that will test both processors and scan the memory and
pretty much make sure that everything is working OK? I'd like to use this
to adjust the various memory settings in the BIOS.

There are some programs for Windows, but is there anything for Linux that
will do both CPUs? Or run two copies of the same program or something?

I'm not sure how to scan and test all of physical memory.

Hey, I have a PII box and I am getting nasty crashes when I access the
sound card at the same time as a lot of screen activity. Runing x11amp
and tryin to open netscape or playing quake 2 or 3, for example both
result in scrambled characters on the screen and a sudden hard reboot.

No log entries, cores, etc. to guide me.

I upgraded from RH 5.2 to 6 in hopes of a fix there, no dice. The I
switched from a chinese MAD 16 to an ESS 1688. Same symptoms regardless
of DMA/IRQ settings..

Anyone seen this? The crashes, for certain, only happen when I'm using
sound and loading the system down. I'll summarize...

other hardware:
440BX mboard
S3 Trio64V2
3c905
Voodoo 3Dfx

Thanks in advance!

Linux has been running on Alphas for *years* now. That was the second
successful port of Linux. That has resulted in the exposure of *many*
"32bit-isms," which represents the most major of the stumblingblocks
to a port to IA-64.

The issue that may prevent instant deployment on IA-64 is *not* the
Linux kernel; it is quite evident that it should cope well with the
transition to about its third or fourth 64 bit architecture. (Alpha,
and UltraSparc, are existing 64 bit ports; I suspect that there may
be some late-breaking PPC or MIPS systems doing 64 bits, but am not
sure if Linux runs on 'em...)

The roadblocks to IA-64 deployment are about threefold:
a) Availability of suitable GCC code generator;
b) Availability of a "boot loader;"
c) Interfacing to any IA-64-specific hardware.

Rumours would suggest that Intel has put some effort into some such
things; if they expect to sell $50M worth of IA-64 hardware in the Linux
market, which should be a cakewalk, spending $1M on resources to help
make the above things happen isn't merely a good idea; they'd be idiots
*not* to spend a little bit of money to ensure that IA-64 can *rapidly*
get deployed in the "Linux marketplace."

(And I'm understating that; $50M would be a likely figure for "first
year" deployments, and is thus an extremely conservative figure...
And "idiots" might also be understating things too...)

The Oki 4W "GDI" laser is supported fairly well by Marcin Dalecki's
oki4linux package. See ftp://develop.dacotec.net/

The OL 400w is also supported by this software.

A good list of Linux printer support information is available at

I built a new LinuxBox this week and boy was it hell getting the
Windows98 partition to recognized all the PNP and IRQs correctly. I
still get 0E errors from time to time playing DVD movies. But that's
mostly fixed now and the MicroSoft part is perfect. Those 3D games
smoke.

I set up my Linux Partition with Slackware 4.0 and successfully
installed it from my Syquest Sparq drive. You guessed it. My XF86config
reverts to 300X200 svga mode even after I manually added

Chipset "RIVATNT" in the device section

I believe that there is more than one XF86Config file on my partition or
I'm typing the Chipset name in an unrecognizable form.

Could you cut and paste your XF86Config file to a post to the newsgroup
please so I may look at it? I'm reluctant to download your .gz file.

The official page for the program "imwheel" to add the "roller"

If you have the Logitech mouse with the color Logitech logo on it,
you're in luck. If you have an OEM Logitech mouse with a monochrome

Subject: 3Com 3CXEM556 and pppd: working but sloooooow...
Date: 3 Jun 1999 15:14:57 GMT

Hi all,

So I got my 3Com 3CXEM556 working on my SuSE box. Kernel 2.2.5 with
pcmcia-cs-3.0.11 modules. Both my eth0 and ttyS2 come up OK. There
was a few problems with ttyS2 working on te default irq (3) which it
seems it shares with the eth0 interface, so I changed to the irq to 0
(setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 0). That allowed me to use minicom on the
modem, and of course ppp.

So, I can connect no problem. In fact, I'm using it now. BUT - it is
incredibly slow. I am getting about 0.7k/sec throughput. The odd
thing is that I can only ever get a 33.6 connection even though the
# I dial supports x2.

I'm wondering if its because I am using irq 0? I know this causes the
modem to use a slower polled mode instead of interrupts, but, if I
change it to any other irq (even if its not being used byt anything
else) I can't query the modem at all. I even tried having it use the
default irq (3) and then stopping the eth0 interface, but I still
couldn't query the modem. Nada. Help!

Do I need a special init string to send to the modem in order to tell
it to use 56k? And also, are the options I am sending to pppd OK? I
am just dialing a regular Ascend TNT box at the remote end, nothing
fancy.

Can anyone help at all? Here is the pertinent information:

Finally, Apple created a product, worthy of attention :)

Well, I have tried it. They are some pros and cons. I would also
suggest looking into LinuxPPc. It's written in the native PPC code, so
you'll get a better performance. so, check out www.linuxppc.com (or
www.linuxppc.org)

I have run ot on a 9600/233 machine, ran pretty good.

you looking at an average 500M, minimum 300M, although there are a lot
of things to trim out even then.

check out the pdisk --it's one of the best, if you don't mind "No Gui",
but then..why run Linux, if you like GUI:). Drive Setup will do too.
read the dox on the site, they are as detailed as it can get.
Also...backup your files, BEFORE you start partitioning.

did you say you used the redhat installer before?
well, this is exactly the same thing with slightest modifications. You
can't see the differences at all. you'll love the install. it took me 2
min to get the installer to boot, and then 2 hours for FTP installation
and that's it.

There are some problems though. Read the dox on the site, if something
goes wrong, let me know, I'll try to help you, if i can.

enjoy the power of linux on a Mac!
