I'm tyring to run X with Rh 5.1, using an S3 Virge DX 4Mb, and a 17"
CyberVision monitor.
When I run startx, I get a monochrome screen appears briefly, and then I
get the message "caught signal 11". I also get the message xinit:connect
refused errno111, and xinit no such process (errno3). Can anybody tell me
what these mean?
I'm pretty the problem is with my monitor, but I don"t know what to do>

Actually, it's not false advertising, just highly misleading.
They can't call their modems "Winmodems" anymore than AMD could call
their CPUs' "Genuine Intel".
When you go to return your modem, tell them it's because it's
a "Software based" modem, not a Winmodem. The difference is that the
term "WinModem is a trademark, and therefore CANNOT be advertised by a
competitor's brand, but the "Host based", "Host controlled", or
"Controllerless" modems for our uses are the same thing as the useless
"WinModem" trademark junk. Explain that unless your vendor can supply
Linuz software for your "Software only" modem, then it won't work in
your application, and they should CHEERFULLY refund your money, or
exchange the item with a known hardware only based device.
Good luck.

Date: 19 Feb 1999 14:40:31 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'd like to announce the release of tpconfig version 2.2, the Synaptics
Touchpad Driver for Linux. Version 2.2 contains support for the
recently released 2.2.X kernels. Version 2.2 also now gracefully
times-out if it is run while gpm is active or if tpconfig is run on
top of X.
The Synaptics touchpad is used on a variety of laptop computer
including Acer, Dell, Gateway, Olivetti, TI, Winbook and others as a
pointing device.
tpconfig is available at www.compass.com/synaptics.
tpconfig is available as a gzip'd file and is also available in binary
and source rpms on this site.
This software is made available under the GPL license.
Much thanks to John Bell ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) for his help in identifying
a problem under the kernel 2.2.1 and his assistance in debugging
this version of tpconfig.
tpconfig was originally written (version 0.1.1) by C. Scott Ananian
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and is now being by myself at this site.
Send comments, suggestions and bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Revision History:
2/16/99 Version 2.2:</b> - Bruce Kall ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Modified to work with 2.2.x kernel as well as 2.0.x
kernels. This version now also gracefully times out if
being run on top of gpm or X.
7/8/98 Version 2.0:</b> - Bruce Kall ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Changed to work with modern Synaptic touchpads which contain
newer firmware (that have a single mode byte). Also added
detection of newer touchpad info ('Super' 'Ultrathin',
'Widepad','Stamppad','Submini','Multiswich').

have you used the pnp-tools already?
you should do a "pnpdump >/etc/isapnp.conf" and then edit this file
(/etc/isapnp.conf)
-> you set the right options in this file...
you could ofcourse read the man page for pnpdump(8) and isapnp.conf(5)
ofcourse if you have a winmodem then all your hope is lost... that modem is
too stupid to act on it's own... it needs some windows dll's which ofcourse
linux doesn't know of

Subject: TX mainboard, serial, modem probs...
Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 10:14:36 -0500
Hi all,
I have a Socket 7 TX mainboard. I was planning on using it as a
PPP server for my network. I have a zoltrix 56k external modem.
The problem is when using minicom, the TR light on the modem comes
on, yet the commands I issue to the modem are ignored. I turned on local
echo in minicom, which had the effect of showing me the commands that were
being ignored. This was with /dev/ttyS1 attached to the second
onboard port on the mainboard.
I tried connecting the ribbon cable to the first onboard serial
port on the mainboard, attached to /dev/ttyS0. After firing up minicom,
the TR light did not light up, but the TD and RD lights were solid on.
Still no response in minicom.
The modem is fine, so is the serial cable. I verified this by
installing it as a "standard modem" on a Windows 95 pc. After looking at
the output of dmesg, I can see that Linux knows about the two ports. I am
beginning to think this mainboard is flakey... Anyone here have this
problem? Can anyone point me to a Linux HW diagnostic utility?
One other thing... this machine had been up for nine days... in
/var/log/messages, there were IDE timeouts {device not ready for command}
on two different days... I suspect there is an IRQ/Address conflict that
is not readily apparent
Thanks,
Jon Milliren

Hi,
I have an AMD K6-2 300 (MB has VIA chipset) with an STB Velocity 4400
AGP (no TV output) and it works great. So I think that a Viper550 will
also work. But with an STB Velocity 4400 AGP success is almost
guaranteed.

No, I think this really is a "Winprinter". A winprinter is merely a
"dumb" printer with undocumented control codes; typically this will be
supported via a Windows driver, but there's nothing preventing Lexmark
from also shipping NT and OS/2 drivers as they seem to have done.
There's also nothing preventing Linux developers from reverse
engineering the system and producing a Linux driver; this has happened
with HP's "PPA" control language and even the Lexmark 7000, although
both efforts have as yet ony printers successfully in black and white.
(Note that it is possible that this unfinished Lexmark 7000 driver
might get something out of your Lexmark 5700; give it a go).
FWIW, Lexmark has the most interesting line of printers, Linux
compatibility-wise. They produce printers of two types:
- Paperweights. Most of the inkjets fall into this category.
- Perfectly supported printers. Typically these grok PCL 5 or
Postscript. Many of the Optra series fall into this category.
Lexmark makes Postscript color inkjets and even gives away the
source code to the program required to calibrate and load these
printers under Linux (!)
I've just added the Lexmark 5700 to the paperweight category of my
printer support database; most of the other Lexmarks are already
listed. Links to the Lexmark 7000 driver mentioned above can also be
found there. http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi
All of this gloriously hard-to-come-by supported printer information
will be part of future Printing HOWTOs.

I got a strange problem with the 3c574-TX.
I set up everything and I really read everything I got about PCMCIA
under Linux. I run a Suse 6.0 with the original 2.0.36.
The PCMCIA-Module detects my card correctly and doesn't give any error
message.
But if i want to ping my server I get 100% lost.
If i insert a 3com 3C589D-TP everything works fine.
The PCMCIA-docs tell me that the driver for the 3c574-TX is buggy. But
I can't believe that it absolutly doesn't run.
I have a 3com Office-Connect Dual Speed Hub8 and under Win9x the card
works fine with 100 and 10 MBit.
Everbody got a hint?
