Hi Martin,
There are several new Linux-driven PDA's coming soon. Maybe you want to
wait awhile:

I have absolutely no use whatsoever for a PDA, but I am going to buy the
first Linux PDA I can find, just to support Linux.

I have a Sony camcorder hooked up to a Pinnacle PCTV capture card, and I
am looking for decent video conferencing software that is compatible
with <bleah> MS NetMeeting and CuSeeME. There are a few programs
available, but they are all in beta.
Anybody have any ideas?

Hi!
I tried to apply patch to kernel 2.4.2 and got many rejections.
Is it normal?
I made it with command

It's about a nic of brand: Tulip Computers (The Netherlands)
Type : NCC-16 CAT
It is an ISA-Card, with chip : SONIC (Tm) S9352AD DP83916VF.
In Win9X it is supported as TULIP NCC-16.
It is not mentioned in the Hardware-HOWTO at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO-12.html (networkadapters).
Is this card nevertheless supported in Linux??

Odd, when I tried it, it would not, in fact, gave me about 1000 lines
of assorted warnings and errors, mostly involving dreferencing
pointers of incomplete types.
Looking into the source code reveals a comment in the "Unsupported
Features section", listing 1.xx.xx and 2.2.xx kernels as being
unsupported. It does claim to have been tested on a 2.0.36 kernel.
Perhaps it will compile with that set of kernel headers, but it will
not with the 2.2.17 kernel supplied with Mandrake 7.2.

Subject: promise controller bios?
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 13:07:07 -0500
Hi there,
Just built a machine with a promise controller. Would like to put linux
on it. But, apparently the contoller's BIOS cannot be found, because
after checking the memory, the AMIBIOS doesn't switch to Promise
Controller BIOS - which typically detects the drives connected to it.
Instead, it goes to the device list (where it does indicate a Mass
Storage Device, IRQ11 on slot 3 - I've tried another slot btw.), and
then looks for boot records from floppy and CDROM. I did tell the
AMIBIOS to look for boot records on SCSI and other devices as well,
although it doesn't try SCSI (I assume because the controller's
BIOS wasn't found).
Sorry for the off-linux topic, I know there are a lot of knowledgeable
promise controller linux users here though.
Please help-

With a pilot, the cradle plugs into a normal 9 pin serial port. The visor uses
a USB connection, and you need a recent kernel to support it. I use the
pilot-link package which provides low level programs to copy stuff to/from my
Pilot IIIc and a transfer rate of 57600. There are Gnome and KDE layers on top
of this if you need the eye candy. You will have to check whether pilot-link
is provided by your distribution (it is with Red Hat). The two programs I tend
to use are 'pilot-xfer' which does backup and restore functions, and 'read-cal'
which converts a pilot calender into ical format.

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 18:17:46 GMT
I have just bought a Logitech wireless mouse. This is the new model with the
usb connector and an adapter for ps/2 mini-din. I added a further adapter to
connect to my serial port, on the theory that if usb can convert to ps/2, and
ps/2 can convert to serial, then with two adpters one can go from usb to
ps/2 to serial.
In any case the thingie doesn't work. I have tried Microsoft, Mousesystems,
MouseMan and I think one of the Logitech drivers in both gpm and Xwindows.
The Logitech web site is of course useless. Anyone have one of these (or the
next previous model) and what protocol etc. did you use?
Temporarily I am using a Belkin Classic Mouse. It defaults to Microsoft mode.
I specified three button mouse in the Pointer section of XF86Config but the
middle button doesn't work under xwindow. It works under gpm. Any hints on
the Belkin?

Modem not receive and send faxs
Hello All!
I have a problem. I am using Red Hat 5.2 on my server and HylaFax as
fax-program. I have modem Zyxel U1496E+, it's good fax-modem. When I am
working in Internet, the modem's work is fine. But when I want to receive

... error!!! The connection is dead. And this situation each case is
repeating. I think, I incorrectly made settings of Hylafax or faxgetty, or
modem.
If You can help me, I shall be very grateful! In Russia not enough
information about Linux, Hylafax, etc!
Best regards!

Subject: Resetting a CD burner?
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 15:57:55 +0500
Hi,
My ATAPI CD burner works pretty well under Linux (Mandrake 7.2, Kernel 2.4.2)
with the ide_scsi driver, but there is one problem: if I abort a burn or
if it crashes for some reason, the drive locks up and I can't eject the
disk or do anything else with it. After a few minutes the SCSI drivers
go crazy and start rapidly streaming the following error messages to the
console:
kernel: SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 Mar 14 15:29:33 danimal kernel: SCSI host 0 abort (pid
0) timed out - resetting
kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Prevent/Allow Medium Removal 00 00 00 01 00
This grinds the system almost to a halt and I have to reboot. I was
wondering if there's a way to reset the CD-RW drive so that it will
respond to commands again. Currently the only way I can reset it is to
physically shut off the power to the computer, a soft reboot won't work!
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Quite a while ago I tried to install on an FX-001D. IIRC I had to use RH5.2,

I just crosschecked, RH5.2 does indeed have a driver for Mitsumi CD-Roms.
Actually there are two of them, you may need to check both.

I had the same problem you do, and I called promise about it. They said that
right now they only have support for Redhat, (as you already know) and that
you'd have to compile your own drivers if you want it to work with SuSE. So
personally I switched to a 3Ware card. That probably doesn't help you
much... sorry. Just thought I'd let you know.

If you want room to grow, I'd recommend getting a dual-processor mobo. They
cost a little more, but the expandability can't be beat. Today you can get
a 1 GHz Pentium III and have a nice, fast box. In three years you can add
another 1 GHz Pentium III and have a nice, fast box. Linux has pretty good
SMP facilities; take advantage of them.
Second: go with name-brand parts for the fewest troubles. Don't buy some
el-cheapo $10 made-in-Bangladesh 10/100 Ethernet card; plunk down the $50
and buy a nice 3Com instead. Don't buy hard drives from Dr. Fred Mbogo's
Computer Parts and Professional Dry Cleaning Service; go for Maxtor, Western
Digital, Seagate.
Third: go with industry standards whenever possible. I bought a Voodoo3 for
my box, even though other 3D accelerators are out there which have better
performance, because the Voodoo3 is pretty close to an industry standard
(just about everybody supports it). Never had a problem with it. Go for
Riva TNT2, the GeForce, the Voodoo3. Don't go for anything that's too new
and bleeding-edge; odds are, Linux won't have the support for it that you
want.
Don't bother with SCSI. I'll probably get flamed mercilessly for this, but
UltraDMA/100 is soon coming to Linux, and if there's any significant
difference performancewise between UDMA/100 and most SCSI cards, I haven't
been able to see it.
