The filesystem type should be 'c'. Example:

# fdisk -l /dev/hde

Disk /dev/hde: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 790 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hde1 1 510 4096543+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/hde2 524 657 1076355 83 Linux native
/dev/hde3 511 523 104422+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hde4 658 790 1068322+ 83 Linux native

Mount mechanism should be vfat. Example from /etc/fstab:

/dev/hde1 /Va vfat noauto,user,defaults,rw 0 0

A "painless" way would be simply to change the bus frequency to 75mhz with
the jumpers on the motherboard. That should work without incident and get
you up to 375mhz.

Subject: Mouse problems in X with RH 5.2
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 05:44:09 GMT

I am really hoping someone can help me out with this one, becuase I am at my
wits end.

I have a Celeron 300A (running @ ~378) w. Abit BH6 MB, and I use a Logitech
Firstmouse+ serial on COM1. This was all working fine, until I removed my
modem. Suddenly, mouse no longer works in Linux. I have a Win98/RH5.2 dual
boot, and the mouse has no problems under Windows.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I tried everything I
could think of, from changing the com-port settings in the BIOS, to trying
all available mice I can get my hands on, and with all serial mice, I get
the same problem, the mouse cursor slowly moves to the bottom of the screen
and stays there. When I run X with the "correct" com port, it has no
problems (ie. it doesn't give any mouse errors) but the mouse does not work.

PLEASE! Somebody must have an idea for this. I have tried everything I could
think of and the mice I tried are as follows:

Logitech
    FirstMouse Serial
    FirstMouse PS/2
    FirstMouse+ Serial
    FirstMouse+ PS/2
    Mouseman Serial
Microsoft Mouse PS/2
IBM Mouse PS/2

All of the serial mice just fall to the bottom of the screen, and the PS/2
mice just jump around the screen randomly.

I had a LT firstmouse working, so I know that it must somehow work, and all
of the above mice work fine under Windows, so I assume it's not a hardware
defect or improper BIOS setting.

I need the mouse to work though if I am to use Linux. Please! if someone
knows what is causing this, please email me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks.

I use an APC Back-UPS Pro 280. This is enough to run the computer AND
monitor for about 10 minutes. Most Unicies are currently supported,
but Linux is not. However, there are two daemons available that
support most APC products ... I use apcupsd which is available only in
binary form but is very configurable and has network support (shut down
remote machines if power goes out, etc.) and good monitoring (logging,
etc.).

Disclaimer: Yes, I'm an authorised APC reseller, so I'm biased.

look like the standard output is sent to something else.
I am saying that because I can load Xwindows (by logging in first first, i

I am trying to set up 3 sound-blaster AWE64's in one computer under
linux(don't ask!) I know sndconfig only lets you configure 1 card and
writes the info to /etc/isapnp.conf, but I have edited that file
manually to include 3 of them. I first booted the computer into win98
and successfully configured the os to see them. I then used the irq,
dma's and addresses to set them up in /etc/isapnp.conf. They ended up
using irq's 5,7 and 10 and dma's 0,1,3,5,6,7. To make the story short, I
couldn;t get them to work. Does anyone know of an easier/different way
to do this? Is it possible?

Thanks,

I've written a kernel patch that fixes it now, I'll make it available soon and feed
it back to relevant people if they're interested. Basically it's a bug in the BIOS,
which doesn't do the specification properly -- it claims to be APM 1.2 compliant,
but is also broken when running as version 1.0 and 1.1. I'm also forwarding details
to Mitac.

should eventually be available from http://www.shams.demon.co.uk/

The latest BIOS on the web site is 1.02, Mine came with 1.03 (methinks they don't

Phoenix Maxi Gamer...it is based on the 3dfx banshee chipset (128 bit I

I got it running on a vga16 X server (looks awful...if you remember)...the
SVGA server won't run properly on it either....is there an alternate X
server that will be more compatible with this card?

If so, we would both apprecitate it...

In additon I am loooking for multiple serial port cards that can
supply up to 16 ports. Used is fine. where/who has cards that are
compatible with Slackware Linux with the 2.0.36 kernal release?
I have one serial port that can do com 3 and IRQ 5 but it will NOT
work on linux as IRQ 5!! does Linux always assume that IRQ is for the
second paraelle port?? My old Trantor t130B scsi host adaptor usxed to have
fits on irq 5 also. I only have ONE printer How do I resolve this? I am
uncertain if this is a hardware or software problem. AS I can see, all
other IRQs are working Although none of my 8 bit serial cards support
anything other than IRQ 3,4 or 5. I am in a bit of a pinch both
financially and hardware wise right now and I need to know where to start
debugging.
setserial does not help matters. nor did hacking the serial.c
routines in the 2.0.36 kernal.
my computer is a 486/Dx2 66MHZ VESA local bus machine with Vesa
Scsi and SVGA cards. I have 20mb of memory.

Hello,

I did you try /dev/lp1 (in 2.0 kernel series) or do you have a 2.2.
kernel.
(/dev/lp0 is then correct). If you are a new / normal user i would not
recommend running
a 2.3 or 2.1 series kernel.
(Can anyone confirm that not even plaintext will come out of a HP720C)
Try if plaintext is printed by your printer do as root:
test if the printer works by simply do echo Blah > /dev/lp1 (or echo
Blah/dev/lp2)
The paper should then be pulled in by the printer, and the printer
should print Blah

Date: Wed, 9 Jun 1999 16:35:18 GMT

As a followup to all my postings about SMP and Linux and sig-11 problems
and not being able to duplicate them:

I think that the overall problem was/is the sound driver in kernel version
2.0.32, which is what I'm currently running in SMP mode.

I can positively crush my system with compiles, matrix math, busy loops,
and even the dreaded Netscape, and I don't have problems. I've reinstalled
all my DRAM and turned the cache on and I've done over 100 kernel compiles
without a single fatal error.

I got the hunch when the "play" program (plays .wav files) locked up
the whole system, when I was using that instead of amp to have some
tunes while the system chugged.

So now that I'm not using any sounds whatsoever, the whole system is
rock solid again, even though my CPUs don't exactly match and I don't
have the updated 2.2 kernel.

Many thanks for all the pointers, ideas, and tips during this time.
I've learned a lot about the system, and a lot about trying to get to
a motherboard that is obscured by hard drives and cables.

My next PC is going to be in a full tower case.

Thanks again!

My old computer BIOS has a limitation of harddrive size of 2.1G. I

see 2.1G for the new disk. There was errors in redhat 5.2 upgrade/install

Presuming the things plug into the standard keyboard and ps/2 mouse ports,
you should be able to get at least some response from them. (standard
keyboard and 2 button mouse at least). Take a look at imwheel for wheel and

BTW- Logitech is one of the best companies when it comes to cross-platform
