Linux on an Alpha is true 64-bit. However there is currently a limitation in
the
kernel that it can only support 2 Gig (If you try to boot with > than 2 Gig
on Alpha
the machine will lockup). Once this limitation is fixed (which I expect is
more
a function of the fact that very few people have that amount of RAM kicking
around
then a technology problem) then you'll be able to address the maximum amount
of the Alpha chip.

I know at one point there was a SPARC based machines that was booted with
5Gig in it. However I believe that there were some changes made to the
kernel
to accommodate this.

2.2.x should be more stable...the way linux kernel release number works:
     MM.mm.bb-pp
     MM = Major release number
mm = minor release number, where even numbers are stable release,
and odd numbers are development branch..no stable
     bb = build numbers
     pp = patch numbers

Right now 2.2.x is the stable release and 2.3 should be the latest
development codes but not guaranteed stable.

There are no particular problems with RHL 5.2 on this machine,
I updated from 5.0 to 5.2 few weeks ago.
It works well, except that I am still having a small problem with XFree86:
before launching it, I have to log in as root then do scanpci ;)
Otherwise it works fine, even I didn't have to rebuild the kernel
2.0.36 provided with RHL 5.2 ;)

Hope this helps, do not hesitate to contact me in case of trouble -

Hi!

someone can tell me if the Siemens I-Talk (internal ISDN Adapter) is
supported by the actual HiSax version?

I use SuSE Linux 5.3

in the Readme-file I have read that all Cards width Siemens Chipsets are
supported (on my Card ist a Chip Siemens Chip)

But: In the SuSe Hardware DB I have found this entry:

"ISDN: SIEMENS I-SURF
Typ passiv
Treiber Diese Komponente wird nicht untersttzt.
Erfat am 23.08.1997"

when i try to configure the card width Yast, I can't find a card that will
work.

is there a possibility, and when: Haw can i configure the card?

Subject: de620 on Toshiba
Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 19:42:49 +0100

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDS notebook and would like to use a
portable DE-Link 620 ethernet card in the parallel port.
I have a 2.2.1 kernel and the compiled the de620 module. When I load the
module it correctly recognizes the de620, because dmesg says 'de620 at
address, 32 M, UTP', which is OK. But when I try 'network start' the
computer freezes completely. I have to take the de620 out of the
parallel port to be able to use it again.
Someone has got any idea why this happens ? I have no parallel printer
nor other devices attached at the parallel port, no lp module loaded,
and I tried with and without the parport module, always with the same
result. From /proc/parport I see that parport correctly recognizes the
parallel port with mode ECP, EPPS, SSP at 0x378 irq 7 dma 3. I also
tried to set the parallel port to bidirectional instead of ECP in the
BIOS, but this also did not help.
Before I start the network, if I look in /proc/ioports the de620 is at
0x378, but /proc/interrupts shows that the interrupt 7 is not used,
after I try to start the network, and then take the de620 out of the
parallel port to be able to use the computer again at irq 7 there is the
de620, but dmesg says 'Could not get interrupt 7'.
I have the same problem also with the old 2.0.33 kernel.
Thank you in advance,
Bianca

supports it or if anyone knows some way to make it work. Thanx! :)

now that I've recompiled the kernel, WITH modules as well, it doesn't

I compiled the modules, and did a make modules_install. My

parameters, but to no avail, it still does not work. Can any help me?

Which CHIPSET ?

You must look at vendor : siemens

http://www.suse.de/cgi-bin/cdb.cgi?lang%3dE%3aVENDOR%3dSIEMENS

Look at your card and find the CHIPSET ;-) so again

Make sure your /etc/X11/XF86config file contains something like

Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Video Card"
    VendorName "ATI"
    BoardName "Rage IIC"
    VideoRam 4096
    ChipID 0x4755

The ChipID is what makes it work.

As I've already clarified to Dave offline, the issue isn't _my_ wanting
to buy a preinstalled Linux system, it's that there is/are VARs who are
very strongly considering offering same, who might be favorably inclined
were they to find significant interest in the product.

Face it, with the press Linux has experienced in the last several
months, anyone in the computer business (and a lot of people outside it)
would have to be blind not to know what it is. There _is_ interest on
the part of VARs, there's also uncertainty. All I'm saying is to make
the business case for them.

Here's a configuration for you;

Dual Pentium II 233MHz
Tyan Tiger 100 (No onboard SCSI)
128 MB RAM
Adaptec AAA-133 (Running as 3 standard aic-78xx, hardware RAID isn't working
yet)
3 IBM SCSI/UW 4.3 GB HDD
2 Seagate Hawk 4.2 GB HDD
NumberNine Revolution 3D AGP
3c905b
OPTi931 Sound
USR 56K Voice/Data/Fax ISA modem

RH 5.0/5.1 install with no problem. OSSFree doesn't support this sound card, so
I'm ordering the commercial driver (eval worked fine). The USR is PnP, use
setserial(rc.serial) to set the correct IRQ.

Of course, following install, I recompile a custom kernel to support SMP and
disable the used portions.

Running 2.2.1 now, It flies.

Life doesn't get much better than this!

Y2K is solved, now what do we do about Why2K?

setting up a server. I installed RedHat Linux of a cdrom, everything
went fine, just fine. Now it is up and running and I can no longer
access the cdrom. when trying to mount the cdrom I get the message:

mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device
(maybe 'insmod driver'?)

so I typed insmod cdrom and got no reply and adter mounting the cdrom
again I get the same message. Anyone any ideas?

it is a sinmple 24 speed atapi cdrom and is recognized at startup by
