Subject: Re: Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32A, is the Burn Proof software or

I just bought a new Plexwriter 4/2/20 SCSI II CD Writer and SuSE 6.4
Linux recognises my NCR53c810 SCSI II card no problem.

My system is an EIDE with three HDD's and one IDE CD-Rom. All this
stuff works just fine.

However, I cannot read data from the SCSI Plexwriter. All that happens
with the Plexwriter is the ON light continually flashing on and off. I
have tried various jumper settings - all to no avail.

As you people seem to have success, perhaps you could advise me on some
jumper settings (I have tried various combinations from the manual) that
may help, or perhaps advise me if the ON light continuous flashing means
some other problem

Any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Wayne

A high beep and a low beep means the PC Card was recognised properly but
that the software needed to actually use it failed. The reason for that
failure would normally be written to /var/log/messages.

Try it again, then immediately look at the log. This will give you (and
perhaps us) more insight into what the failure is.

As far as the control panel is concerned, my one (with a Xircom XEM5600 and
xirc2ps_cs/serial_cs) filled in automagically with the tulip driver.

I'm running Redhat 6.2 with kernel 2.2.14-5.0, and my system doesn't
detect memory above 64mb (I have 256).

My config:
Abit BE6-II, 660Mhz P-III (6 X 110Mhz bus)
256 mb RAM (in 2 PC133 128mb chips)
2 HDs, 4 and 7GB
nVidia TNT2 ultra (Diamond Viper 770)

my Output from free is still only 64mb total physical memory, and the
total 263mb swap (2 partitions)

I've tried compiling 2.2.14 again, and tried running 2.2.16 also. On the
other hand if I run 2.4.0 test7 the kernel detects the right amount of
RAM.

Any Ideas?

I have MSI-6321 (aka 649Dpro) dual P3 667 (FCPGA) 128MB ECC. Started with
RH6.0, now patched to 2.2.16 due to VIA UDMA66 and on-board sound.
It works fine. If you are concerned about memory performance goto
www.h-oda.com (or look for how to use WCPRSET).
Then choose what you want (2-way, 4-way interleaving) and use linux setpci
to set chipset registers (e.g. setpci -s 0:0.0 50.b=FF).
Have fun.

Add
  append="mem=256M"
to your lilo.conf and rerun lilo.
This is, BTW, a vFAQ (very Frequently Asked Question).

I just recently changed from a K6-2/450 to a Duron-700. First I had a Epox M/B,
all worked ok with this mothermoard, except power on. After a soft power off, I could
not power on with the front panel power switch. I had to power off/on on the power
supply. This happened only when it was powered off more then 4-5 hours.
Since I didn't wan't to crawl under the desk for power on I decided to return the epox
board and spend more money for a ASUS A7V, because I had good experience with
the early ASUS Pentium boards.
When I started up for the first time, I got constant blue screens in W2000 and NT4,
Linux
got disk errors and segmentation faults.
I swapped my memory around into different slots a few times and it hasn't failed since
this
time.
I have an A7V with the dip-switches and bios 1002.
SB-LIVE in slot 3
Nvidia TNT2 32MB AGP Card
INTEL 10/100 eepro in slot 5
Seagate 20MB ST320423
CD-ROM Memorex 48x
256MB memory 133's, which are 2 x 128MB. One module is TT and the other Hyundai.

I have the normal BIOS settings and the memory set to 133. Installed additional
chassis fan.

The system has W2K, NT4 and SuSE Linux 6.4. I have not encountered any problems, after
sorting out the inital problems, which were probably not well seated memory modules.

Now I try to get the Promise ATA100 controller working under Linux. It works very well
under
NT4 and W2K, after installing the drivers from VIA and Promise, but Linux can not
recognize
any drive on the Promise/ATA100 controller.

Anyone aware of any drivers for Linux?

Horst Simon

The AHA2940 chipset was used by Adaptec on a variety of different
cards. Not only was the original 2940 a non-wide, non-ultra card,
the very same card existed in at least three slightly different
layouts. AFAIR, the old 2940 is not on sale anymore. All you
get these days is the UW model, and of course other cards like
the U2W, the 3940 ones etc.

Using a 2940UW card _should_ give you all you need, though
personally I

a) wouldn't use any Adaptec card anymore (overprized and extremely
   sensible to cable and termination errors);
b) would go for the U2W models now, as these cards make life
much easier (especially if several SCSI devices are to be used).

Subject: IBM 300PL hanging regularly
From: Jim Diamond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 13:17:27 GMT

Hi,

I have an IBM PC (don't ask!), a 300PL 6565-86U. This machine has
218Mb of memory and an SR9 Xtreme 16 Mb video card. I recently
installed Slackware 7.1 and I am using the SVGA driver (XF86_SVGA) at
24 bpp, 1024x768. Slackware 7.1 uses XFree86 3.3.6.

The problem is that the machine regularly hangs when letting
xscreensaver run. Sometimes the machine will run for 12 hours or so,
other times it has hung within a minute or two. When it hangs, it
doesn't respond to pings or any keyboard or mouse activity, so I have
to power-cycle it to reboot.

This problem has occurred both with the generic kernel that comes with
Slackware 7.1 as well as one which I compiled for the specific
hardware and options that I wanted (both 2.2.16 kernels).

I'm a bit stumped at to what direction to turn at this point. If
2.2.16 was this flaky, there would be lots of people complaining
bitterly. Similarly, if XF86_SVGA was this flaky, I'd also assume
there would be lots of complaints (unless I'm the only person using it
with this video card, which also seems unlikely).

The only clue I have is that both the "strange" screensaver and the
"ifs" screensaver have been running a number of times when the machine
hung (I modified my .xscreensaver file so that the "start new
screensaver" events are logged). I could just remove these from the
lists of screensavers which run, but if they are only helping to
reveal a hardware problem with the PC (for instance), maybe all I'll
be doing is fooling myself into thinking that it's safe to do critical
work on this machine.

Anyone out there have any experince with this machine? Any
suggestions for ways of giving the hardware (the video card and main
memory come to mind) good tests?

Thanks.

Date: 30 Aug 2000 09:27:09 -0400

Does anyone know how to get the Promise Ultra66 controller to work in CHS
mode?

My current system has a single IDE drive formated in CHS mode.
This includes a small boot partition (/dev/hda1), a swap partition
(/dev/hda2), and my main linux partition (/dev/hda3).

When I put this drive on Promise controller in it sees the drive as LBA on
boot and can't access the drive.

Is there any way to change Ultra66 setting to CHS, either in the
drive or by on the Ultra66 controller? I guess the other option is
to boot from a floppy and change it with a boot option. Has anyone
done this?

Thanks for any info,

If I do a:

# tar cvf /dev/nst0c tmp

to dump something to the tape, it seems to work fine, but if I
then do

# mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind

I get i/o errors, and it doesn't appear to have written
anything. Then, if I look at the status again, it's still at
file 0.

Or, if I dump a filesystem and then try to use
"mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1" to move around, it returns immediately, but
doesn't move the tape. In fact, I never hear the tape moving.

Until I can get this working, I'm sure I can't do dumps since
I need to be able to do multiple file systems per tape.

I'm sure I'm doing really stupid, so I'd be very grateful
for any help you might be able to offer. All I want to do
is to be able to do dumps of this machine and a nearby Sun
occasionally....

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks.

Hi all, I have some questions about burning CD-R/RW in Linux (Red Hat 6.2
distro.):

1. How do I make a bootable CD-R/RW burn of my RH 6.2 installation CD ? I
would rather not have to download the ISO image, given the bandwidth
   of my internet connection.

2. Does Linux support 80-minute/700 MB CD-R/RW's ? Does my burner (MATSHITA
   - Panasonic? - CW-7585 support these extra-sized disks ? I have looked
on the manufacturer's web site, and there is no indication one way or
   the other.

3. Could someone point me to some resources on CD-R/RW burning under
   Linux ?

Thx in advance !

Thank you for the response. In term of the its quality when printing
on a plain copy paper under windows NT-4.0, it looks as if it is
printed on a laser printer. I have not had a chance trying this BJC-
6000 under Linux. I am thinking of doing some reverse engineering work
on this printer's drivers but don't know where to start. Although I
have heard that there is such a thing called windows decompilers that
will decompile the windows .EXE and .DLL files to a C source code, I
still am not familiar myself with the Windows OS. May be after someone
tells me where I can get the windows decompiler, it is then I will be
able to start decompiling the printer drivers and port them to Linux.

BTW, I only paid $15 (after the huge rebates and local tax before the
rebates) for this BJC-6000. I guessed it certainly worths itself for
$15 than paying more to get the EPSON Stylus 740.

I recompiled my kernel for my PIII processors and noticed that my time for
processing SetiAtHome data became slower by two hours. I selected the
Pentium Pro (6x86) option for my setup. Should I have selected one of the
other processor options instead?

I am running Mandrake 7.1 on a dual PIII 866 w/ kernel 2.2.16.

Thanks.

1. I downloaded the necessary files for
Slackware 7.1 (Not the iso image ... to big!)
and put them under /home/slackware, preserving
    the tree structure.

Then I followed the directions in the
    CD-Writing-HOWTO from
         http://www.linuxdoc.org/docs.html#howto

I also had used this document to get the
    CD writer working.

2. I don't know. I use an HP drive myself.
However, if something isn't mentioned in
the specs, it probably can't be done or
    doesn't exist.

3. The above mentioned HOWTO has some links
that should help you get started.

Good luck,

John
