I'm running an Athelon 600 and a PCTV Pinnacle card that dual boots with
Win98.
It works fine in Windows but whatever I do in Linux regardless of what
software I use it just locks up my machine.
I'm using Mandrake7.2 which has xawtv and kwintv installed but it makes no
difference which. I get sound (though only static) then the system locks up
and I have to re-boot.
I've tried it on an AMD K6-2 450 and the same problem occurs. The programs
seem to start up ok but thats about it. I've even tried loading new versions
of the software to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong in setting it up and does anyone have any help.
I'm in England so I don't know what tuning data I need, England is PAL
whereas I think Western Europe is SECAM so could this be a factor?

Not sure if it will help, but a few people got the same card (I believe)
working under Linux, and posted here:

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, everyone...
Ok, I'm sure this is a basic issue for those experienced with audio
hardware, but I have zero experience with modern sound cards. (Previous one
cost $15 and was ESS-based.) Now I have a new system and a new sound card
-- invoice says Sound Blaster Live Value PCI, and the sticker on the card
says CT4830; that's all the info I have, because it was OEM. (Oh yeah, I
got a CD with it that's labeled "Sound Blaster Live 1024", and seems to
contain drivers for various flavors of Windows.)
I'm running Mandrake 7.2, kernel has basic sound modules compiled, plus
support for EMU10K (lsmod shows "soundcore" and "emu10k1" loaded when I'm
playing sounds). HardDrake [chuckle] detected the card and didn't seem to
do much; it works great for playing every type of audio I can think of --
except CDs.
Troubleshooting steps I've followed:
Tried going down to basics -- login as root, use "cdp" to play a CD...
nothing.
Changed owner/permissions on /dev/audio*, /dev/dsp* ...nothing. (My SuSE
laptop has mode 666 for those devices; Mandrake created them as 600, but
neither seems to make a difference.)
Changed audio cable between CD-ROM and sound card (swapped out the cable,
changed it from CD-ROM to CD-RW [BTW, I may never store MP3s on the hard
drive again, since playing 'em from a SCSI-based CD device seems
rock-solid!], flipped it end-for-end, reversed polarities... nothing.
Anyway, have exhausted the on-system documentation and can't seem to find
anything relevant via Google (damn, I miss DejaNews) -- my problem seems to
be the opposite of the one most people have. Any advice would be much
appreciated! :)
Thanks,

Larry,
How did you boot? Did you have a lilo bootdisk? If you did, perhaps you
could share that with us - I was able to install my linux, but coannot boot
it, as I am using a lilo bootdisk, but I need the ft.o module
installed in the kernal, just to "see" the root partition, to complete the
boot disk.
I sinstalled, via a boot/root disk pare, and insmod-ed the ft.o module into
the running ramdisk linux kernal from the boot/root disk. That way, I saw my
hardrive as one large scsi drive, to which I could alter the partitions and
install linux.

Shouldn't be any problem with the 2.4.0 or 2.4.2 kernels. (Stay away
from 2.4.1, because it had a bug that corrupted your disk under certain
circumstances.)
So far as I know, any ATA-100 drive should work with either of those
kernels. I've been running Linux 2.4.0 off a Maxtor ATA 100 drive and
PCI controller for several weeks. I don't know the model numbers, but
they are whatever is on the shelf in all the stores right now. (The
controller actually has "Promise" stenciled on it.)

I'm a little vague on this, but I believe that it
does use the AT command set. However, most of the
data transfer uses the IRDA protocol.
I'm afraid I can't be much more help than that. I

I take it you mean v4.0.2 of XFree86...
First thing to do is download the drivers from
Matrox's web site - they're listed alongside the
Windows drivers. The README in the archive gives
fairly good instructions for modifying an existing
installation. There's also some sample XF86Config
files at the end of the README, showing how the
dualhead settings work.

I've got an Intel Etherexpress TPE Hub, and was wondering if
there might be any support (drivers) for this card... From
a quick search, I didn't see anything relating to it, and
of course, Intel is of no use for something this old...
In case you are wondering, this is a multi-port ethernet
card - one HD connector that is hooked up via a cable to
what Intel calls the harmonica.... Takes the function of an ethernet
connection as well as a hub...
Thanks!

Argh... I meant the "setup" utility, which runs both Xconfigurator and
sound setup. Sorry if I look like a super newbie. I had video on my
mind from my attempts to get RH6.2 to set up X half decently. It saw
the s3 TRIO 64V 1-meg video chip, but gave a crummy 1152x864 8-bit video
with the left half of the screen partially grey. 800X600 was OK, but no
mention of 24-bit resolutions. RH7.0 set up 1152x864 properly and also
gives 800x600 16 bits, and 24 and 32 bits at smaller screens. GNOME is
an absolute resource hog. Unlike Windows, I'm able to dump the desktop
and go with straight FVWM2.

It works. I've just installed RealPlayer 7 and tuned in to some
oldies on http://netradio.net . I'm still scratching my head
over why RealPlayer 8 complained about it being for "a different
architecture". It's an "i386" RPM, so a Pentium II shouldn't be
problem.
Where do you find out these parameters for modprobe? I did try to
RTFM and didn't see mention of those parameters.

Don't know if this will help you, but under SuSE 7.1 I had to make sure
(force) the PROTOCOL was set to imps2, and the DEVICE was /dev/psaux.
Otherwise it seemed to go into la-la land when I tried to use the
autodetect. I then had to enable 'buttons', and set the z-axis to
'Negative 4' and 'Positive 5'.

Linux does not support the raid features of the HPT370 yet, you'll be
better off sticking to s/w raid for the time being....

You need a boot-disk with hpt370 support to recognize the controller. I
know SuSE 7.1 has it, for older distributions you may have to hunt the
web. Or check dejanews (now google) - there's been tons of posts on
this.
As for the Raid-part: you cannot install Linux on a windows-made raid
partition (since you can't access the windows drivers needed to provide
the raid). You can create raid in linux afterwards. For that, find the
raid-howto that's sure to be somewhere in your package.
Good luck,
Jurriaan
