thanks for the feedback... the stac compression does suck, doesn't it?
Also, are you having NAT and/or IP routing problems? That's one of the
reasons I want to get rid of mine. It used to work just fine, now a lot
of the time if I connect, then disconnect, the next time I have data bound
for my ISP, it doesn't go... It'll bring the ISDN connection back up, but
the NAT table didn't get refreshed or something... if I manually
disconnect the ISDN and let the traffic bring it back up, it almost always
works. Also, the MP stopped working all of a sudden too. I've read the
book cover to cover practically and been through all the menus, and
couldn't make it work. I have a networking background (wrote ISDN
microcode for routers) so you'd think I could make it work. Anyway,
thanks again for the feedback.

Hi,
I have a thinkpad 570, with Suse 6.1 (kernel 2.2.7) installed, and cannot
get any sound. I tried alsa without success, even if the chipset seems to
be supported.
Kernel soundblaster driver does not work too: My last try game me the
following error while loading the sb module:

Thank you for your answers, I absolutely *need* to play civctp with sound!!!

personally, considering their cost, I would turn it into a coaster and buy
a new one, But if you want to try... do you want it in dos or linux format?
I bought my zip drive to use with my Amiga, so reformated some disks to
the amiga file system, that works fine, later I built a pc, bought it a
scsi card and used the zip drive on that, now I use linux after being
pissed of having to put up with windoze.
ok. I reformated one of the Amiga zip disk in windows, it worked fine - in
windows!, the Amiga or linux could not read it, because windows formated it
with different block size hmmm, so reformated it as a ex2fs linux disk,
great!.
I wanted it to see if I could get it back to a standard zip format disk,
one that could be read on everything.
in linux fdisk
go fdisk /dev/sda or whatever your zip drive is.
delete all partitions on the disk, use the extended commands and print the
partition table, you will see 4 primary partions, if you want a linux disk
you use partition 1, if you want a dos disk you must use partition 4, do a
create new partition, select p for primary and 4 for the partition number
(for a dos zip disk).
set the bootable flag to "ON", set the partition type to 6 which should be
dos fat16 >=32 meg, write this to the disk and you should have
Disk /dev/sda: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 96 cylinders
Nr AF Hd Sec Cyl Hd Sec Cyl Start Size ID
1 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 00
2 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 00
3 00 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 00
4 80 1 1 0 63 32 95 32 196576 06
Disk /dev/sda: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 96 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda4 * 1 96 98288 6 DOS 16-bit >=32M
then exit fdisk, do a /sbin/mkfs.msdos /dev/sda4 (in redhat 5.2) or mkdosfs
/dev/sda4 ,
for linux just do mke2fs /dev/sda1 <--- note the difference in the device
name.
hope that helps

Well I had everything nice and set in Redhat 5.2 and then had to make the move
to Redhat 6.0... Now nothing works... The isapnp.conf file that I've saved is
worthless under Redhat 6.0. Well at least this time around it was easier to
setup my pnp soundcard, but my modem is still under the fritz....
According to the /proc/ioports file the IO range (03e8-03ef) I'm trying to
access is already under use by the serial port... Now, how do I tell the
serial port to take a hike and move to another IO range?
Thanks,

If you'll read my message, you note that I said overdrive wasn't often a
problem, usually all that does is soften the high voltage. My message
dealt with underdrive in terms of horizontal sweep rates.

I have a Umax 1220S on a TekRam 390U myself (plus a cdr and DAT tape on the
same scsi chain, disks are on another scsi controller). Other than having to
get a db50 to db25 cable for the scanner, everything works great. Note you may
have to go looking for a 390U, the places I've bought in the past (notably
comp-u-plus) only feature the 390F, which has a wide 68 pin external connector,
which means more of a special cable. Also, the scanner needs to be the last of
the chain, due to having only a db25 connector. I also wouldn't put ultra
disks on a scsi chain with a scanner, since I strongly doubt what passes for
termination on the scanner is active termination.

Hmm, with xscanimage at least, you can set the size of the scan. I've set my

Assuming that there are no other scsi cards, and by Adaptec you mean a 2940
compatible adapter (294x, 394x, or 789x, etc.), try editing your
/etc/conf.modules file, and add the line:
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
(for some other scsi adapter, change aic7xxx to the module that supports the
adapter).
If you are already have a scsi adapter and added a different one, change the
scsi_hostadapter to scsi_hostadapter1.
If you have built your own kernel, you will need to configure in scsi support,
configure in scsi tape and the adapter.
You could try manually loading the scsi adapter module, and look at
/proc/scsi/scsi to see if any devices are recognized, and then load in the "st"
module if it isn't already loaded.

I tend to like TekRam 390U (ultra-narrow) and 390F (ultra-wide) myself for
cheap controller. They are currently about $70. Though my disks are now on
the onboard Adaptec controller, I did use the TekRam's for about a year

To the best of my knowledge Win9X does NOT use more than ONE
processor. So it works as it always does. Try NT and see if your
board is stable then! Linux is usually better on OC'd boards
because it stresses the cpu's less.

While adaptec's do tend towards the higher end of the price range, the slam
against them is old news, and has long been fixed in all modern kernels
(Adaptec now works with the driver maintainer). I've been running my SMP
processor with 5 disks on a dual channel Adaptec 7896 since about Feb. or March
with no problems that are scsi related. On my previous SMP system using the
older drivers about a year ago, I did experience file system corruption and did
switch to TekRams, but the current driver seems rock solid to me.
