If you are a totally newbie i recommend you to get version 5.9 of
RedHat....don't know where to get it, but in this version your gfx-card is
presented(G100 with 4 or 8mb ram)...This is the easiest way to solved the
problem, if you haven't use linux before
If you have a little more experience i think you should download the newest
version of XFree at www.xfree86.org and install this...
I had the same problem af you, but thanks to some nice people at this
newsgroup, my problem was solved.....like i hope your is soon...

I'm thinking about getting an external CD-ReWritable drive for my system. I
figured what ever my choice in media is, it should be an external device so
I can use it with several system easily.
Here are my questions:
Has anyone had any problems/success with the "BackPack" family? Best price
I've found is $339.
Same Question for the external HPs - best price $329.
Any reason why I should avoid going with this solution?
Also, is it true that some older CD-ROM drives will not be able to READ
CD-RW disks? This is not a (major) issue, but was just wondering.
Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or this newsgroup
Thanks!

I just installed RH 5.2 on a Pentium 400 with 64 MB of RAM. I have a Matrox
Millennium G200. When the X is loading, it finds the card, but then says it
is not supported and defaults to "generic" mode and gives me the squashed
320Xwhatever resolution. Is there any way i can get my card working? Thanks

Anyone know of a way to get some functionality under Linux (RH5.2)?
I know there is a beta OSS driver available at opensound, but I'd like to
explore other options. It is cheaper too buy another supported card than
pay the $30 for Yamaha support from them...

i seem to recall a certain operating system limiting filenames to
just 14 chars until fairly recently. this particular annoyance is now
(largely) fixed and (almost) everyone is happy.
microsoft, in their incompetance, botched the move to long filenames
horribly.
still filename length limitations have nothing to with case
sensitivity. bringing it up is a cheap ruse to deflect the real
question.
case sensitivity is really neither good nor bad, it just is. i
happen to prefer it. however, there's no accounting for taste and i
understand if you do not care for it.

Subject: MPU401 lockup problems
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 14:35:07 -0700
OK, I have an actual MPU401 (8-bit ISA card, made in 1990 or so), in my
Linux box (AMD K6-2 300, 64MB RAM). The MIDI OUT port on the card goes
directly to a Roland SC-55 sound canvas (sound module). The MIDI IN
port on the card is connected to a Roland A-30 controller keyboard. The
card does hardware midi thru to let the keyboard talk to the module.
Now, everything works just fine and well if I leave the keyboard turned
off (ie, the computer can play .mid files to the module with no
problems). if I turn the keyboard on, though, it starts spewing:
mpu-401: Send data timeout
until I kill the process. If X is running, it hard-locks the machine
and I have to do a cold boot.
This also happens using the Jazzware sequencer under X - it'll work fine
for a while, then crash as described above.
The whole setup works fine under Windows 95, I hate to admit. I
*suppose* I can use the Win95 Jazzware, but I'd really rather not, if
you know what I mean.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I've told Alan Cox about this already
but I'm not sure if he has time to work on it, what with all his other
kernel work that he's doing...

would recomend a 350 celeron with about 128 or 256 mgs of ram. An maybee a SCSI card

I don't know of the site, BUT, If you've got a fairly good monitor (nice
17", 19", or bigger), the MAG MXP-17F spec that comes with XFree86 will
work, unless you're using a Trident video card (something about bad

Keep in mind that the people who work phone tech support aren't
necessarily kept informed on upcoming projects. And complaining

When I attempt to run sndconfig, everything works fine until I get to
the testing stage. Here it states that there is an error running modprobe.
I have also noticed that when booting, the messages "Can not find module:
sound" and "Can not find module: midi" appear.
I have reviewed the file /etc/isapnp.conf and everything seams to be
alright. It appears that the card is recognized.
Would anybody be able to help me get my sound card working?

Hi,
As far as I know PCI slots set the IRQ for the card, so if the bios is
changing the IRQ for that one slot then the IRQ of card will change. So
I would look in the bios of the mother board, and I think turning off
PnP on the motherboard and then manually set the IRQ of the slot. This
may help, I know I had to do this with one of my machines.

I have the Dogs/dogs problem on one of my jobs. One folder has about 40
files that begin with the letters "pro" and several that begin
"project". One of these I use much more than any of the others, so I
would like to name it "PROJECT" so it will stand out in windows explorer
and be easy to see. I don't care whether Windows uses the UC or not, I
want it. But Bill Gates insists that it can only be displayed as
"Project" along with all the other "Pro*" files and I have to read down
the list till I find it.

Hi,
To the best of my knowledge it does, I ran an Adaptec 2940UW(PCI) and a
Future Domain 1600(ISA) scsi cards in the same machine.

I just added a Panasonic DVD-Ram drive to my system for almost
the same exact purpose. It's a model LF-D101U and has a SCSI
interface. The disks hold 2.6GB for single sided and 5.2GB for
double sided.
The only issue that I had with it is that the disks have a 2048 byte
block size. I think that this is true for most MO type drives. A
kernel patch was needed for my kernel to allow 2048 byte block
sizes. And I had to get an updated version of fdisk on linux to
partition the drive. Once that was done, everything worked fine.
If you have any specific questions, let me know...
