From: Daniel Gordini <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Lexmark 3200 ghostscript driver - v 0.3d (beta)
Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 12:22:28 GMT

A printer driver that enables Ghostscript to print on
the Lexmark 3200 Color Inkjet printer is available as
a beta release for Linux.
The driver is made using informations obtained by
reverse-engineering the printer protocol, and it has no
kind of support or acknowledgement from Lexmark.

** This is the first public release of this driver, and
** it must be considered a development version.

This version supports both monochromatic (black and
white) and color printing at 600dpi resolution. Color
printing supports both standard 4-colors mode (with the
color and the B/W cartridges) and photoquality 6-colors
mode (with the color and the photo cartridges).
This release does not support 1200dpi and bidirectional
printing: these features are planned for a successive
release.

Anybody interested in testing the driver can find the
documentation and both source and precompiled binary
packages at the URL:

http://www.geocities.com/dgordini

I will much appreciate anybody's help in beta testing and
development of the driver. If you decide to test it,
please do read carefully the documentation before
installing, and after the test send me a short mail
stating your experience (success, problems, bugs,
whatever).

Many thanks!

Arnaud,

Thanks for the advice. It always amazes me how a coder (like me, for example)
can look at a line a hundred times and never see an obvious error.

Of course, now that the oops is gone, the system just hangs. You wouldn't
happen to have any troubleshooting tips for resolving complete system hangs
in a device driver.

I believe I have ruled out a hardware IRQ conflict (the only things in the
system are a floppy, a NIC, and a single IDE interface). The device
drivers loads and runs normally, but when I send data to the new interface,
the system hangs -- no console, no network response, no ctl-alt-del,
nothing. I have tried the interrupt as both a fast and a slow handler
-- no difference.

I appreciate any help you (or anyone else) can give.

thanks again...

It should work just fine.

The drive will be locked whenever a disk is mounted (meaning the
front-panel eject button won't do anything until you unmount a disk),
but the same thing happens with FAT-formatted media as well.

I am using a OptiPlex GX1 (DELL). It has an ethernet port on its
motherboard, but it is of type 3Com PCI 3c905B-TX (Fast Etherlink XL...)m
so it ought to work with the 3c90x driver i believe.

HOWEVER, in /dev there is no eth0 listed, so it is not surprising that the
alias in conf.modules 'alias eth0 3c90x.o' give me an error of 'eth0:
interface not found' or something like that.

Can you give me any suggestions on what is happening? To make things more
complicated I am doing all of this under Debian Linux.

Subject: Re: Athlon recomendations
Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 20:55:51 +0530

Hello,
We are running an excellent Athlon with the following configuration:
Athlon 600
Asus K7M motherboard (BIOS ver. 1006)
512 MB PC100 SDRAM
Seagate 20 GB UDMA/66 Hard disk
SiS 6326 4MB AGP Video card
Samtron 17inch

We are currently running NT 4 enterprise server, and it runs just fine.
before using the Asus K7V motherboard, We had tried the Asus K7M
motherboard.
We got kernel panics whenever I gave the line mem=512 in lilo.conf
We later came to know that the BIOS had to be updated in order to install
NT. But NT still crashed with the K7M.
We didn't try linux after the BIOS update.
the NT problem was solved by switching to the K7v mther board with BIOS
version 1006.

I read at http://www.redhat.com/hardware that Redhat does not work well with
Ahlon systems, as their motherboards use cutting edge technology (they must
be refering to UDMA/66, I think).

However, I did install and run Redhat 6.0 and RedHat 6.1 on the Athlon 600/
Asus K7M/ 64 MB system. Worked fine for 2-3 hours before we switched it off.

Now I'm new to this newsgroup, and request answers or poiners to answer
sources/ FAQs to the following questions:
1. Has any one tried Linux on Athlon/ Asus K7V ?
2. Is the directive "mem=512" right ?
3. Since Linux ran fine on the Athlon system, how can you say that Athlon is
not 100 % compatible with Intel architecture ?
I have always booted a new system with Linux to see the hardware config
etc.
4. What's wrong with using an Athlon for a server ? We have decided to
purchase only athlon systems henceforward.

Ok, so I've scanned about 400 to 500 usenet posts about tape backups and
Linux. But so far I've yet to find any product that stands out the best
for low cost. Do the Segate / HP travan 20 gig drives work?

Is there a website for this yet? After checking the Hardware
compatibility howto I found that tape drive information looks merely
like an afterthought.

I would like suggestions on either sites I can look at. Or, specific
tape products to research.

I'm looking for something at least 10gig, IDE or SCSI. Price range from
200-650.

The only tape devices I've used are DDS1/2/3 DAT drives. However I
can't justify spending $1000 or more on a backup solution when the box
to backup doesn't even cost that much :P

I'm leaning torwards the IDE travan drives from Segate or HP but I've
yet to find anything that makes me feel warm and fuzzy about them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
