Maik,

    Try Redhat.

http://www.redhat.com/cgi-bin/store.cgi?page=/more_rh_sparc.html

They might also have it on their FTP site ftp.redhat.com, personally
I haven't looked there for the Sparc stuff but I know they have lots
there.

Okay.. heres my thing..

Im running it on a Compaq 5100.. but I got it to work by jumpering the
pins that make it think it has an external monitor connected, and just
synching out and back.

The pins on the 5100 are if you get an external cable, and short pins
2 and 7 on the FAR end of the cable (the monitor end, not the PC end).

IF someone wants to nerd it even further, you could probably figure
out which two you have to jumper at the laptop to do it, by checking
continuity on the cables, or finding a pinout schematic for it.

Anyone have a working XF86Config for this PC? I have a black line and
split screen at the top, and im not quite comfy enough to start
hacking the modelines.
(LCD's are not cheap to replace)

Thanks!

The first setup users more than 1024 cylinders. Lilo can't boot off a
partition with more than 1024 cylinders.

Make a small /boot partition (a couple of megabytes), a swap partition
the size you want, and use the rest of your disk as the root
partition. I don't think you will want to partition a small disk like
this any further.

Dan,

...and.. yes the 686 (aka PPro in menuconfig/xconfig) is the right setting
for Xeon CPUs. You may also want to watch during boot to see if both processors
are recognized. Make sure that the kernel was compiled after the SMP=1
statement was uncommented in /usr/src/linux/Makefile.

Shall Java have operator overloading, we could go really crazy because we're
not limited to things like '+' or '>>'. :)

> As for Chinese characters, I might agree with you...

I think it's a stupid idea to write code in any other language than English,
and this includes identifiers, comments, everything.

In my company, some time ago there was a project for the local fab of a big
german company, and they sent us some pile of C code that was supposed to be
updated with new tricks. But everything was in german, which is not really
popular in Brazil... of course there was no documentation other than the
sources :) in that case we could get a professional translator to translate
the docs, but those guys wouldn't be able to do a great job with C sources.
I was lucky enough to not be in that project, but I could feel the other
guys' pain while they slowly deduced the meaning of things from code
structure and from dictionary lookup of key stuff. The point is, you never
know who's gonna be reading your code in the future -- it may be some
partner, or somebody who licensed/bought/merged to you, etc. I'm not sure
how much the rule applies to scientifiec notation. If you are programming
any advanced maths, you are supposed to know the notation, which is an
international standard (mostly true for all respectable exact sciences).

To compile the kernel try "make bzImage", it's better for big kernel.
About SB there is a mini HOWTO named "Soundblaster-AWE", it explain how to
configure your sound card.
I had Suse Linux 6.0 and I use my sound card to play CD, Wav file, Midi
file.
If you have some trouble or problem mail me.

One way is to FDISK /MBR but then you need to reinstall LILO and probably
the Linux software. You could use Partition Magic or something similar and
not need to repartiton the whole drive. As for your Xwindow issue you will
need to install the Xserver. something like xf86_SVGA or the like I can't
remember the exact file name and select the mouse, keyboard, etc. You will
need to know your monitor info i.e. horz. & vert refresh and VGA card info.
There's a little more to it than this but discovery is part of the learning
process. :-) I still struggle to learn.

Use dd to skip over files (dd if=/dev/<whatever> of=/dev/null).

I have the same problem on an Alpha with an external Tandberg SCSI drive.
Reads and writes work, rewinds and retensions work, but other tape
positioning commands don't. Luckily, the dd trick is enough to read by
old multifile backups.

Anyone using or know how to setup this card or any Iwill SCSI card?

This card claims to be Linux compatible but after I got it it turned out
that there is no driver in the box. After consulting the web site I
downloaded what Iwill claimed was the driver. It is actually a boot
image and the instructions require me to do a re-install of my Red Hat

installing their boot image I must then do my Linux install on the
second partition. No way I am wiping out my whole system just for these

I have this odd ? problem.
There just popups ansi graphics blinking all over my screen
if I type clear+<CR> then my screen clears, but its annoying when I reading
text in emacs or vi.
I wonder if there any setup things that I have to do to correct this problem
And in X it works OK in the beginning but after awhile there is all crap
or the the graphic don't show correctly....
I've read the Cirrus FAQ and tried all there but I think the problem is
somewhere else due to that in command line... I get this Ansi graphics
exploding all over my screen.
