The only reason you would need that much memory on your video card is if
you're going to be playing a lot of 3D games. If you're not going to be
doing that, save yourself some money and get a nice ATi Xpert98 with 8M or
so. If you're set on playing games and you want Linux compatability,
your best choice is probably the Matrox G400. The nVidia TNT2 chipset
(found in cards like the Diamond Viper 770) is also very easy to set up
with a recent distro, but nVidia are being evil wrt 3D drivers and their
binary-only OpenGL stuff occasionally makes X die.

You need the popt, newt, and slang rpms.

Hi,

it using the BJC-4000 drivers but, it won't print a test page or
anything. I appreciate any help in this matter.

If you're still interested, the simple solution is to put the water
reservoir outside the room. And this is only useful if the
temperature is significantly lower there. But because it can get hot
even outside in the summer, it looks like you need a heat pump (refrigerator).

Subject: PS2 Mouse Problem In Quake but not X
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 23:30:02 GMT

I'm a complete Linux-newbee and I can't figure out how to get the mouse
to work properly in Quake I for Linux.

It is a PS2 Logitech 3 button MouseMan mouse that works fine in X or KDE
but when I start Quake, it does not function correctly.

The left-right movements in Quake are very quick and far too extreme. I
tried to customize the controls to change the Quake controls as I have
done in the DOS version but it would not map the mouse keys and lowering
the sensitivity did not work. Quake did did not recognize the mouse
clicks when I clicked them in the Quake control setup. I wanted to
reassign the forward movement to the right mouse button and attack to the
left mouse button.

I'm running RedHat 6.0 on an AMD K6-2 300mhz on an Asus P5-AB motherboard
with Quake I.

I'll be very pleased if anyone will help me. Many thanks.

I have one of those installed in a box, works ok. Can you be a little
more specific than doesn't like it ? The one I had would not load using
the defaults on the card, once I moved it to another IRQ it was happy.

If it is going off hook and dialing, then it's not a winmodem. Sounds
like an IRQ conflict.

Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux.misc
Subject: Tape backup: tar versus dump
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 21:40:40 -0500

In reading the tape backup discussions in the comp.os.linux.*
newsgroups,
I read of some using tar for backups and some using dump (of the
standard
Linux commands, that is, 3rd party applications are a different story --
and
unacceptable to my dissertation advisor). We're using an HP 35480A (a
DDS DC [DDS-1 with hardware compression] SCSI drive).

How can one decide between tar and dump? Both have terse man pages (what
do you expect? :-) ) but dump's seems more inscruitable than tar's. I
know
what tar does (and how to write a short shell script to make it a
proper backup utility), but I don't really have a handle on dump.

In reading dump's man page, I find it backs up either filesystems or
directories. In backing up directories, it seems to work like tar.
In backing up filesystems, I understand that it works on a partition-by-
partition basis. I have been told that in doing so, it makes an image of
what is on the partition, but have seen no documentation that describes
what's exactly going on.

In any event, it seems that neither tar nor dump backup the MBR and the
partition size table. Thus in recovering from a total disk loss, one
would
have to partition the (new) hard disk, roll the backup tapes onto the
new
disk partitions one-by-one, and then run /sbin/lilo to write the MBR. Is
dump better for this than tar? How does one decide?

In addition, the different backup levels of dump are confusing. Why ten
different levels? Why not just two (full and incremental)? And how does
the, "Tower of Hanoi algorithm," help maintain the integrity of one's
data backup?

As you can tell, I have a lot of questions!

I tried out the SONY PCG-C1XA (Singapore version ofthe C1XS) in the
shop yesterday.

It has a neoMagic NM2000 with 2.5MB Video RAM. The built-in screen is
1024x480. On the external screen, it supports 1024x768 (256 colors I
think).

A coolfeature is that it can drive both the internal and external
screen at the same time as a double headed desktop. For this you can
use the internal screen at 1024x480 and the external (VGA) at
1024x768.
It then allows you to move windows off the right edge of the internal
screen onto the external display.

I wonder whether something like this would be supported by X under
Linux and how to make this work.

Has anyone tried something similar with this or any other PC under
Linux/X? Note that it does not have two graphics controllers, but that
the same controller controls both screens!

Can Linux do this?

We would like to put some "obsolete" hardware to use as web browser kiosks.
We have Win95 and IE installed on them now, but I though I'd give Linux a
try.

Requirements:

- Run pretty well on 486/66's with 16MB RAM.

- GUI that is fairly easy to use for a non-technical Windows user

- Support 3270 connections to VM mainframe

- Simple web browser with low memory requirements; must be easy to use for
people familiar with IE and Netscape.

- Must be able to "lock down" the desktop so that users cannot change the
configurations at all. The only things we want these machines to be able to
do is browse the web and establish 3270 sessions.

- As an added bonus, it would make my life easier if I can manage these
machines remotely from my office.

- All software components must be freeware.

Does anyone have any opinions on the feasibility of this, and suggestions
for products (3270 client, web browser), and techniques (ideal Linux config,
locking down desktop)?

I'm just getting started with Linux, and I really like what I see so far.
Thanks in advance for your opinions and suggestions!

If you can't do this with Linux after reading "Linux for Dummies" then
you aimed too high. ;-)

There is nothing that you have asked that can't be done in Linux.
