Subject: Small, Short Rackmount or Desktop ATX Cases
Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 15:50:11 -0400
I'd like to make a short stack of PCs using small cases.
I've considered 2U - 2.5U rackmounts, but the case cost goes from ~$70 to
about $400. I don't know why. At that price, the case costs as much as the
rest of a Celeron 400 128M system!
Expansion is unimportant for these systems: one or two (short) PCI slots, no
ISA, and perhaps an AGP is fine. One CD and floppy per box, with one IDE
disk.
Here are the options I'm aware of:
Case Footprint Height (inches) Height (rack units)
________ _________ _______ _____
mini-NLX: 11.25" x 14". 3.4" high ~1.9U
NLX: 17" square. 4.2" high. 2.4U
micro-ATX: 15" x 18". 5.1" high. ~2.9U
ATX: 17.5" x 19". 6.2" high. ~3.6U
Slim ATX: 17.3" square 5.3" high 3U (Avance CI-6004)
The NLX option would be ideal, except that there are only two boards
available: Asus P2B-N and Gigabyte GA-6Z0Z. Both allow two PCI cards, but
neither allows an AGP card to replace the on-board ATI Rage which can only
drive 1600x1280 at an unusable 66Hz.
NLX boards also cost more than ATX: ~$235 for Slot1, with Socket 370 (PPGA)
listed on the www.giga-byte.com site (GA-6ZOZ7), but not actually available.
Use of the PPGA Celeron packaging would save about $70 on the chip, and a
bit on the board as well.
So NLX works for servers or small monitors, at a $150 premium.
Does anyone know of a small, short ATX case (not a micro-ATX)?
Something less than 5 inches tall?
The smallest I've spotted is the $60 "Avance Slim Desktop":
http://www.avance-technologies.com
It looks like it might have a front panel "power" LED, but no "hdd",
"network", or "over temp". It is sold at:
http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/CSE-avance.htm
Newsgroup searches reveal this question being asked 2/99, without meaningful
response.

Sorry,
Although generally external modems eliminate the confusion about 'Plug N

Linux. Avoid the WinModem at all costs, but beware, It comes in external

Recompile the kernel to include SoundBlaster support (at least). Not a
nice job but not as daunting as it sounds. There should be some
instructions from RedHat - follow them to the letter, make sure the
current kernel and modules are retained in case your new one doesn't
work, and set aside plenty of time. My PII-400 takes about 10 mins to
recompile but a slower CPU could take hours.

Another alternative is to download a SVGA Server from
http://www.sis.com.tw. They also have a XF86Config file available for
download. I downloaded both, unzipped and untarred them and put thme
each in place, and it worked. I had to reajust the XF86Config file for
my hardware (mouse and monitor) and for the resolution I wanted.
Due to Sync limits on my monitor, I only got it to work at 1280x1024.

Hi,
I have a problem with a second hand IDE Conner hard drive I was given.
This drive is currently the master drive on ide1, hence hdc.
In the BIOS I have LBA turned _off_ for both my drives.
Upon bootup both my drives are found with the correct geometry.
hda: Conner Peripherals 850MB - CFA850A, 813MB w/256kB Cache,
CHS=1652/16/63
hdc: Conner Peripherals 1080MB - CFS1081A, 1032MB w/0kB Cache,
CHS=2097/16/63
But during the partition check the following is displayed
Partition check:
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
hdc: [DM6:DDO] [remap +63] [524/64/63] hdc1 hdc2 hdc3
and the geometry from then on is 524/64/63
I have tried the drive in different Linux machines and this always
happens, I have done a low level IDE format from BIOS but nothing seems
to stop the remap at boot time.
What/ why is this remap happening?
Thanks,
Nigel.

I plan on trying that, but I don't expect much success. As I said,
it works fine in slot 0. The point is, the message is coming from
a BIOS level activity, long before the system is booted. I've
never heard of this with the Netgear card before, and I managed

could find no references to anything even remotely similar.
I tried to find something, anything, in the CMOS settings that

the company about the matter a couple of times and about the only
support they gave me was "just configure as standard vga", what a great
help, totally useless, and I guess it serves me right for not doing the

image is totally inadequate. I was hoping it would configure as super
vga but so far no luck. I know this is probably not a common problem,
but does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do.
