Subject: I'm *close* with my Epson 740 setup...please help!
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 13:00:13 -0400

Hi guys,

Well, it's been a long tough struggle...but I can at least print text
files with my Epson 740.

Setup:

RH 6.0 with a newly compiled 2.2.9 kernel.
The newest ghostscript (5.50)
Epson 740 on the parallel port, parallel port support compiled into the
kernel and irq 7 assigned.

I followed the instructions on the 740 website and used Dale Pontius'
740.upp files. (Had to hack the descriptor because printtool kept
bombing out).

I now have 3 printers set up on /dev/lp0 (lp360,lp720 and lp1440). I can
send the ascii test page to each one via printtool and I can print text
files via my text editor.

**Nothing else works** I cannot send any graphics file to the printers.
The *.ps files or even printing a page from netscape seem to
"disappear". The postcript test file in printtool also does not work.

"lpc" reports that all the printers exist, but status always says "no
entries, no daemon running" . Using the "start" command in lpc seems to
get the daemon up, but the printed files are *gone*.

This is particularly frustrating because on my setup at home (RH 6.0, GS
5.50 and Epson 600....) everything works great.

Any pointers and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jil

Subject: problems printing to intel NetportExpress PRO/100 print server with redhat
5.2 linux
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 16:37:32 GMT

I am running RedHat 5.2 linux on a Intel Pentium III. We have other
machines in our network that can print to our Intel NetportExpress
PRO/100 print server with no problems. However I cannot seem to get
our Linux servers to print to the print server. I have a Cannon
LPB-1260 laser printer attached to the print server which is a HP
compatible printer.

I am able to ping the print server from my linux system just fine.

Here is my /etc/printcap file:
netlsrptr|netlsrptr|netlsrptr-on-parallel-port-1:\
:rm=209.69.52.131:\
:rp=LPT1_TEXT:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/netlsrptr:

If I issue a /usr/sbin/lpc status command after trying to send a print
job here are the results:
netlsrptr:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        1 entry in spool area
waiting for netlsrptr to become ready (offline ?)

If I issue an lpq -Pnetlsrptr command I get these results:
waiting for netlsrptr to become ready (offline ?)
Rank Owner Job Files Total
Size
1st root 13 (standard input) 1191
bytes

The printer has paper and is online. If I print from my workstation or
another server I do not have problems.

Any help with my problem would be greatly appreciated.

I installed the rvplayer patch this weekend. It's a marvelous
little patch to make /dev/dsp non-blocking. Very ingenuous.
I used it all weekend long to watch the astronauts working
on the International Space Station.

Hi,

Last time I accessed my linux system I had the same errors only with some extra
cracking sounds from my harddrive. My drive is dead now and it is archived in the
trashcan. So what I try to say is better make some backups just in case.

I'm trying to implement a RAID 1 (software) using linux 2.2.5 - I've read
all the relevant FAQs.
I've created two partitions /usr and /usr2 on different disks and would like
to mirror them. When I follow the instructions (mkraid /dev/md0) in the new
software FAQ, I get a "device is busy" error and I cannot umount the
partition. If there a way (and is it a good idea) to create the raid before
the devices are mounted?

Any help on this matter would be grealtly appreciated.

Ahain and again,
What you have with Linux ( apart from reliability and stability)
is documentation. The problem is that many people want to install
Linux without reading any HOWTO file. For video cards you should
know what chipset your card has and then have a look at the
documentation at www.xfree86.org .
If something does not work with windows either you are good
enough at guessing or you have to give up!

my 2 cents,

Daniele

Do you also have support for SCSI cdrom compiled into your kernel or
loaded as a module? I think that you should use /dev/sr0. There is a
SCSI-HowTo and a CDROM-HowTo where you might find some help.

I just kept trying the mount command from /dev/sda0 through to /dev/sda6.
Turned out that my Zip100 SCSI connected to my Ultra SCSI adapter was
/dev/sda4. So the final mount command was:

mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

Good Luck (BTW I don't have a clue about ppa Zip drives)

as for believing there are Unix-only networks, I'm a Datacomms engineer, and
I can tell you categorically there are more Unix based networks than NT, no
matter what Bill might say.
After all, the average time an NT box stays up without a reboot is 4.6 days;
it's not uncommon for a Unix server to run for years without a reboot.

Hopefully the 1887 is backwards compatible with SOMETHING.. I would simply
try every ESS card there and try each combination of IRQs and DMAs.. You
might get it to work. Also try sound-blaster compatible. This might score
you some luck too.. Problem is the darned thing is probably plug&play and
