Using Red Hat 6.1. I have my Zip drive connected to a SIIG IDE controller
card 1st channel as Master,as my 5th IDE device. How can I mount my zip
drive? I have tried /dev/hde /dev/hde1, but I get a message that says the

Actually, if you pay attention to the world, you'll realize that there
is a world-wide economic crisis that North Americans are sleep-walking
thru -- those that aren't already struggling (the ones who don't get
on TV, i.e. most of us...)

The widening scramble to extract profits out of every possible sector,
and most especially out of the sexy (i.e. 'higher margin') new
'Hi-Tek' geek IPOs, has led to this present stampede of speculation --
most notably (for us) into Linux here. Linux is 'special', because the
speculators are following Microsoft's competitors as they jockey to
out-maneuver Windoze with their sudden-found 'free' OS...

THIS is the true reason for Linux' sudden cachet, and their fete-ing
and toasting of Linux geeks -- most notably(?) RedHat...
These jackals will as-easily dump Linux stock in the blink of an eye
when their purposes are no longer served -- but I guess that's the
'free market' at work, eh? Don't buy that BMW yet...

True Linux supporters want to make it easier to install because they
have a vision; speculators want to see it easier to install merely
because they want to replace Microsoft -- and become the 'next' Bill
Gates.

We live in truly decadent times...

Subject: UDMA66 Problem
Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 23:33:05 -0500

I have an Abit BP6 (two 433 Celerons, not overclocked!) with four IBM
37.5 GB EIDE hard drives connected to the HPT366 UDMA66 controllers (hde
thru hdh). I am running RH61 and 2.2.14 kernel with the most recent IDE
patch. The controller and all four hard drives are detected and I can
cfdisk them (fdisk only sees 4 GBs...go figure). I can mkfs and mount
them without a problem, but under heavy usage, I occasionally get "hdX:
Timeout waiting for DMA." This will either hard lock the machine (with
HD activity light on) or the kernel will kick the controller back to PIO
4. I have a similar setup using a Promise Ultra66 card that works
without a problem in UDMA66.

The system is otherwise rather vanilla: 128 MB SDRAM, Netgear
Tulip-clone NIC, and a cheap Trident AGP card. The system is booting
from a 6.4 GB drive on ide0 which is DMA33. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike Prinkey

I agree that PCChip ( and its aliases) are not good buys, but I was able to
get my 571 going without a whole lot of trouble. It has integrated video
and sound. I've never used Mandrake, so can't really advise you there.
Don't give up yet.

Hi,

Does anyone know if there has been work in progress to get the Logitech
QuickCam Express USB supported under Linux?

I have been looking for info on Logitech QuickCam Express USB for Linux
to no avail. The only ones that I found were the linux kernel support
for QuickCam and some other QuickCam supports through a parallel port.

You might want to consider getting a DVD-RAM drives, which I think could
be a cost effective backup solution (I think dual sided DVD RAM media
can hold up to 5.2 GB per side). I recently read an exchange in this
group (found on Deja News) about a fellow using rsync to backup to his
DVD drive, you may wish to check it out.

dear all,

are there any scanner/fax machines that are known to work under linux?

i don't mind sweating to get USB working, as long as the device CAN operate
well under linux. i also have a great ultra wide SCSI 2 card, so scsi is
also an option.

i've heard that hp is "linux friendly" but after going to their website,
it looks like their scanner/fax machines are windows only.

Yes, this modem will work under RH 6.1. You will need to setup your
ppp connection, which may require calling your ISP. Also, you will
need to tell Linux which com port the modem is on. This can be done
through control panel. I hope this answers your question. Anything
more would require someone with a little bit more experience with
Linux than what I have.

Try using cfdisk instead. My 37.5 GB IBMs only showed up with 3.8 GBs
available in fdisk. Also, make sure that you have the 2.2.14 kernel
installed. I think 2.2.13 and earlier didn't support 32+ GB EIDE HDs.

Hi Lu:

You will have to build a new kernel that includes the "Creative Ensoniq
AudioPCI 97 (ES1371)", "OSS sound modules" and optionally, "SoftOSS software
wave table engine" - use the default sampling & voices.

I prefer to build in rather than employing these as modules.

I use the Creative PCI64 on my machine and it functioned right out of the
box - not the case with horrible Creative pnp ISA cards.

If you have any problems, email and I will try to help.

Best regards,

Hi

an . Dann kann ich mir noch die Modem-Behfehle anschaun.
So weit so gut.
mir modem is busy.

Hi,

I report that kernel-2.2.12smp and kernel-2.2.15smp is unstable
for some programs, very unfortunately, such as mine.

My program runs well on kernel-2.2.12 and kernel-2.2.15, and
crashes on the smp versions of both.

I tested with three compilers (PGI, Fujitsu, Absoft)
on both single- and dual-CPU (Intel PIII). The result are the same.

The reason I use Linux is the support of muliti-processor.

Does anyone have any idea of what is going on the smp kernel development?

Thanks in advance.

when I used RH ppp I set it as ttyS1 and i can not remove it cause i get

was some segmentation fault with in RH3 - config.) I have Red Hat linux
