Does anyone just happen to use this monitor (Radius PrecisionView17), and/or
have access to the specs? Radius's site makes it hard to find any real
information... though they have a cute picture of the monitor, doesn't
really help me w/ specs though!

Thanks in advance!

my ati 3d charger (AGP, too.) works with the svga server. so far, ive
had no luck using the accelerated mach64. maybe you could try the svga,
too.

*a call to linux gurus:*
does any x-server or the svga-libs actually make use of the Accelerated
Graphics Port, like putting textures into the main RAM etc. ?
is anybody working on this ?
and one last thing: are there 3D-libraries like OpenGL that use AGP
features ?

thanks in advance,

Hello!

I want to set up an alarm schript that should check a certain thing
regularly and should somehow give an audible alarm if there is an error.
The problem is the speaker. If I take the following perl script, it
beeps happily when I run it from the console or via telnet:

#!/usr/bin/perl
print STDERR "\033[10;3000]";
print STDERR "\033[11;100]";
print STDERR "\007";
print STDERR "\033[10]";
print STDERR "\033[11]";

But it won't work if run with cron. It mails the output nicely formatted
to me but doesn't give a beep.

Anybody any idea how I can make it beep also from cron?

Thanks
        Tobias

Hello Glen,

Two ideas-

1. ATI cards are usually a decent bet. Some don't offer the best
performance on refresh rates at high resolutions, but it sounds like you
don't need that. XPert 98's are usually like $50 nowadays. A friend has a
Mach 64 card from ATI (I forget which one), and is happy with it.

2. Bit better quality. You can find Creative Labs Graphics Blaster
Exxtremes with 4MB RAM for (depending where you look) $30-$70 these days.
These cards are based on the Permedia II chip, which I have heard people
sing the praises of for it's crisp picture.

Both these cards work great under X, and fullfill all your requirements.

What's up network.

OK- no you can't use Windows drivers under linux. I would go to www.Xfree86.org
and look in the faq, find the section on supported chipsets (it's like half way
down the page). Find the docs for the chipset in your card. There tehy should
discuss things that could possibly get messed up- you will probably have to
'adjust' the X config file (it's like /etc/X11/xf86config or something like
that) by hand. It's also possible that both these drivers you found (the
rendition one for windows and the one for X11) are reference drivers, and don't
work for STB boards. OK, that's a reach....

If you have to run the generic server- run XF86config (perhaps the wrong
capitalization) from the console.... son't select a graphics card, and pick the
VGA server when it asks.

use it. it is the definitive source.

Personally, if I had the money, I'd go for Tyan or Supermicro motherboards,
Seagate or IBM hard drives, memory from www.thechipmerchant.com, Tekram or
Buslogic SCSI card, Plextor or TEAC CD-R's. Your tape drive should be ok. Check
http://www.mostang.com/sane/ for sacnners, http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ for
printers. Ethernet I don't know much about. The LS120 won't work (probably).

You won't get very far posting to usenet if you don't read the F*****g
documentation first

'Yo',

There is a file in home directory called .xinitrc (and if it's not, it goes to
the system-wide default, which you will have to find- man xinitrc) that x looks
to before firing up. It should contain a line that fires up your window manager.
If it is there, remove the line that starts afterstep, if it's not there, create
one and add the line 'exec <name of window manager you do have>' where you can
use twm if you don't know if you have _any_, as it comes with all distributions
of X.

The VA Research VS4100 Linux server uses Mylex eXtreme 1100 adapters
(see http://www.varesearch.com/) so there must be a driver available
somewhere. I'd guess Leonard Zubkoff may be involved.

        Couple of things. I assume you installed 3.3.3.1
from the updated RPM's? You shouldn't have deleted the
X11R6 directory. I tried that once, and upgraded from
the xfree tarballs. I had a big mess that didn't work correctly.
        Anyway, yes you are missing your window managers.
They are in separate rpms, i.e. fvwm2-2.0.46-12.rpm
You are probably seeing the default setup, which
is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc unless you have
a .xinitrc file in your home dir.
        The virtual desktop settings are in the
Screen section of your XF86Config. The line you want
is "Virtual"

Probably true and justified since they tell you up front that Windows
is required (at least, the signup information I have seen stipulates
as much). If you want to play games & not use Windows (after signing
