I have an HP Deskjet 812C I am trying to setup under Red Hat 6.1 I
prints fine under Windows, but Linux will not detect the lp port. I
have inserted the line "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" to
/etc/conf.modules and run "modprobe lp" as root, but printtool still
will not detect the lp port. Is there something else I need to do? I
had it printing once before, so I know it will work. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Subject: chassis mount mem card readers??
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martin Brown)
Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 11:03:50 GMT
I see that SanDisk has readers for compact flash (CF), multimedia (MMC),
and smartmedia (SMC?). Problem is, all of these readers are external,
except for the pc card interface and the floppy disk-shaped adapter.
This is somewhat explained by the fact that the readers use parallel or
USB interfaces.
I'm looking for a chassis mount reader, preferrably 3.5", in any standard
mem card format that Linux can deal with. It would also be nice if it
worked with and could be easily be made to work with magicdev.
Any ideas?
Can Linux read/write Sony memory sticks? If so, is there a chassis mount
reader for them?
Thank you for any suggestions.

I have a HP scanjet 6200c - using USB with no troubles at all. Try sane...
AFAIK, the real question is the interface that the scanner uses. If it's
a USB scanner (like mine), try checking out http://www.linux-usb.org/

Hello all,
My box is a PC with an EPoX 8KTA2 and a Duron 700, a Matrox Millennium
II PCI and a Gravius Ultrasound PnP (ISA). It is running Debian 2.2r2
(Kernel 2.2.17).
The IDE-Devices connected to it are:
hda: Traxdata CDRW2260+, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdb: TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6002B, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdc: IBM-DTLA-307030, ATA DISK drive
hdd: SAMSUNG WU32163A (2.16GB), ATA DISK drive
I am quite happy with this machine except for one thing:
Whenever the CD-drives are accessed in some way (reading, burning) at
least two strange effects happen:
1) Sound played at 44kHz becomes noisy and literally slows down.
Sound played at 22kHz or less isn't affected.
2) When connected to an ISP with the 56k external serial modem,
massive communication problems appear. E.g. ping doesn't work (it
simply ceases to produce any output). As soon as the CD-ROM access
stops, everything works again.
Surprisingly the problem doesn't occur with the HDDs, only with the
CD-ROM-drives.
I have tried changing the IDE-cable, exchanging master and slave,
changing the BIOS-settings but the problem is still there. What can I
do? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks is advance,
Christoph

I have an US Robotics 5610A build 0778 (hardware controlled) modem that is
not
recognized in Linux kernel 2.2.16. I understand this modem is not supposed
to work in any Linux kernel less than 2.3, however, several people have told
me they have seen them work in kernel 2.2 and lower.
When checking this modem in WINDOZE ME, it is reported to be on COM 5.
Never seen a modem that puts itself out that far. I can find the controller
for the modem in Linux, using lspci, but it does not report it as a modem.
I have tried the AUTO CONFIG in GNOME, and in KDE, but it does not find the
modem. I am willing to write, or rewrite code, but need to know what to
write, since I am not a programmer, and new to LINUX. I love the LINUX
operating system so far, but without a modem, I am stuck dual booting with
WINDOZE.
I would appreciate any advice on how to set this modem up. I have been to
several sites, and read what they have there, but nothing specific to my
problem shows up.

I've managed to get the card to load properly, but I can't connect to the
outside world.
Fortunately, my knowledge of computers and (fortunately??) my knolwedge of how
windoze works plus some inquiring when booted under RH7, has lead me to realise
that the reason why I can't connect out is that I haven't got the routing stuff
correct. Unforunately, I would have to say that there is little that you guys
to help me with now.
Thanx anyway.

Yeah, my ip address is assigned by dhcp.
I hadn't read all the replies till I sent my second message.
I use netconf to edit the network settings, set the adapter to DHCP and I get an
error message saying something about IP initialisation failure, but I don't get
any error messages when I specify to manually set the IP.

anyone know of a Xserver for this card ???

I'm trying to configure a winmodem under Mandrake 7.2 . The card is a PCI
Conexant (ex Rockwell) soft56k HSF modem. Some people report that with
the "driver" (Kernel module) provided by Olitech
(http://www.olitec.com/pub/PCI_56K_V2_K2.2.17.tar.gz) and kernel
2.2.17 the modem works fine, so I downloaded this tarball, expanded
it under the root dir, get into the cerated dir and launched
./ins_all. An error occurred: unable to open "lin_hsf.inf" but this
file is in the directory, what should I do?
In the dir there is an executable called "inf2bin". I launched it
with the requested parameters (inf2bin lin_hsf.inf lin_hsf.bin)
but another error occurred saying that my country and the one of
the file anren't equal.
What should I do?

If your using version 3.3.3 it won't work, but with 3.3.6 svga driver
should work OK.With version 4 of X it uses r128_drv.O. Try using XF86Setup to
get it running.

US Robotics 56K Sportster Modem, Model 5686
This modem is reported to support distinctive ring mode. Had anyone had
success using this feature with mgetty to answer on a normal ring only and
NOT on a distinctive ring type call?
For those that might not have distinctive ring service in their area, this
feature is provided by the local telephone company to alter the ring style
on two phone numbers connected to one line. A long ring (normal) designates
a call on one number (say a fax or data call) and two short rings on a
different number (same line) for voice calls.
Thanks!

I think this is going to boil down to the fact that the modem may not actually
know how to respond to the second ring other than to give the standard Hayes
response of RING. Do you know whether or not your modem can differentiate
between the rings in its hardware because from memory I think mgetty works off
the basis of looking for a "RING" singal to be sent to the computer from the
modem.

That's because Windows 3.1/3.11 wasn't an OS; it was a GUI environment
with some OS-like features. It didn't include filesystems, for instance;
that was provided by the underlying OS (usually DOS, but in an OS/2
environment, OS/2).

I cannot say for certain, but the HPT370 chipset apparently does not work
with Linux. I just built 4 dual processor boxes with 1 Gig RAM each on
the VP6 motherboard. I was planning on running Linux 7.0 on them with
RAID 0 (just for extra speed). When I started to install Linux, I got to
the point where the software was trying to look for the drives, and the
install could not find any writable media. So, no, I don't think that
Linux 7.0 will install and work with RAID enabled.
Look at this site, very bottom of the page and notice that the patch does
not work for RAID - http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370drivers.htm.
Also, look here: http://lhd.datapower.com/db/dispreport.cgi?DISP?2745
Just go to a search engine (like dogpile.com) and type in Linux HPT370.
You'll find lots of stuff.

Actually, OS/2 can run any real-mode x86 operating system in a
virtual machine. I have an OS/2 machine with DR-DOS, MS-DOS
v2.11, MS-DOS v3.1 and MS-DOS v6.2 running is spearate virtual
machines. This does carry a peformance penalty, however, and by
default OS/2 will use it's emulated DOS environment to run DOS
programs.
IIRC, linux' DOSEMU environment similarly provides a virtual
real-mode x86 machine for a DOS operating system. VMware does a
similar thing in providing a protected-mode 80x86 virtual
environment.

I don't think sound is considered part of the X protocol. There
may external programs that can redirect sound to a remote machine

You need to enable the global write permission on /dev/audio (and
often /dev/dsp). You can also add users to the same group that these
belong to.
I think this is covered in the Slackware FAQ that's posted to this

This link to Dell worked for me:

It is a god place to start shopping for a Dell system with RH 7.
IBM also has offerings, but I think just servers, thin clients, and
notebooks:

These are more expensive than building your own, but if you want a
