Hi Nathalie.

You shoukd find them under flex.h and bison.h, since the programs have
been renamed like that.

My video card is 3DFX voodoo Banshee. I download the xfree86 config file
for my card and it works well.
The only problem is the diplaying screen does not fit my 15 inch monitor
screen. I have to move my mouse aroud the screen to find my tool bars. I
tried to slove this problem but didn't success.
Hope some Linux fans can help me.
Cheers.

Hi all,

This summer I will be looking for a laptop to run Linux on (SuSE 6.1
to be exact). I need something that has a built-in ethernet card and
preferably a built in modem as well. I suppose I want a minimum of
64MB RAM but 128MB would be better. And I think 6GB of hard drive
space would be good.

Does anyone have any recommendations of good laptops that will set up
easily with Linux (I will also have Windows on it but that shouldn't
be a problem I guess). Or maybe there is a good web page out there
for such things?

Jason

Well... start with no more useless crosspostings. Your message was
posted to at least six newsgroup of which comp.os.linux.hardware and
nl.comp.os.linux.discussie off-topic are. A crosspost between
nl.comp.os.linux and nl.comp.os.linux.installatie is almost never a Good

As for your problem... start rename the file to XFree86.3.3.3.1 and try

What about having the servers 2U and the drives in an external Rackmount
case ???
with several scsi bus inside the storage case??

Something like the Proliant storage system with the duplex option. But in
your case maybe 4 bus ??

Eight drives in the older ones, or possibly more in the newer ones.

That would give you 3 ea say in a 12 drive case or maybe a 9 drive case.

Just a thought

Reply-To: Zak Kipling <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have recently installed Debian Linux on my new PC, which has an M598
board. Both the sound and video setup caused trouble, but I have managed
to get it working.

Video (SiS 530 PCI/AGP onboard):
Couldn't get VGA16 driver to work at all.
The standard SVGA driver would only give 320x200 resolution, though it
may work if you play about with the chipset settings for long enough.

However, the XFCom_SiS X server, which is available from www.suse.com
(and possibly other places too) seems to work very well -- at 8 or 16
bpp. I'm running it on a 15" monitor, so nothing above 1024x768 is
really any use to me, but I think it will do much larger if your
monitor can handle it (and you're willing to sacrifice more RAM to the
video system -- personally I just give it 2Mb).

What's more, for the most part it seems happy with the default
settings in the "Device" and "Screen" sections of XF86Config, so just
run xf86config and change the X server to XFCom_SiS -- though
you might want to include the "power_saver" option under "Device" and
the DPMS timeouts under "Screen" if your monitor supports it (but
that's tweaking... it's certainly not essential to get it working).

The above X server is basically an extended version of XF86_SVGA (I
think), and supports some acceleration through XAA (eg hardware
cursor, pixmap cache). I haven't tried anything very
graphics-intensive yet though, so I don't know how fast it is.

Sound (C-Media CMI8338A onboard PCI)
Couldn't get the SB16 driver to work even after putting it in SB mode
    from DOS and running loadlin.

However, there is a dedicated driver available from www.c-media.com.tw
which runs under OSS (soundcore) and (I think) requires a 2.2.x
kernel. Since you would probably have to recompile the kernel anyway
to get sound support, it shouldn't be too much hassle even if your
distribution comes with a 2.0.x kernel. (You'll also have to run the
appropriate script to create the /dev/xxx entries for all the audio
devices if they don't already exist in your system -- if you do this,
check the permissions carefully afterwards as mine ended up
    world-writable!)

However, although I now have the sound working, I do sometimes have
trouble with it crashing for no apparent reason (sometimes heavy
system load seems to be the cause, but often it's not obvious). I've
only had it installed about a week, so there's plenty of things I
haven't tried yet. If it does die, then you can often get sound back
without rebooting. First you need to terminate any process which has
the card driver ("cmpci") open (the one which was using the driver
when it died will probably not respond and need a KILL signal -- I
have one program which requires 2 KILLs). Then (assuming you're not
    already logged in as root):

        su
        [enter root password]
        rmmod cmpci
        rmmod soundcore
        modprobe cmpci
        exit

This will re-initalise the sound driver, which often fixes the problem
(if not, try again and wait a few minutes -- this seems to give the
hardware time to reset itself through timeouts perhaps? If that
doesn't work, you'll have to reboot.)

Also, x11amp simply refuses to start playing anything on my setup...

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Zak.

my news posts are working properly at the moment...)

I'm having problems getting XFree86 running on my new Dell Latitude (CPt

It's not being recognised correctly by XFree86, and is not listed as
supported. Has anyone got X going on one of these machines? Should I try
Accelerated-X from Xi Graphics which supports the MagicMedia 256M6D

With this thought in mind, I am interested in moving to an AGP graphic
card for my Linux system. Can any one provide some recommendations on
particular models that are known to work well with XFree86, i.e., for
compatibility & performance? I was hesitant before this because of all
the prior negative reports.

How do I speed up the movement of a Logitech Mousman in XFree86? To get it
moving a decent speed I have to use acceleration of 10 which basically puts it
on a grid:( I haven't been able to find any other way of increasing the rate of

I have a Serial MouseManWheel and this has no problems with speed. Nor does a

On the subject if Mice has anyone got any applications to recognise the 6th
button? Or a version of GTK which works with Z-axis rather than button mapping
of the wheel? ATM I can't work out how to get the wheel button working (which I
have remapped to button 6. I thought XFree86 now supported >5 buttons?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Probably you have a virtual desktop size bigger than your screen resolution.

Modify your XF86Config file to set both at the same resolution.

Subject: Intel Etherexpress 10/PRO ISA PNP

I have been trying to get the above card working on a friends PC. Had it going
on kernel 2.0.36 using ISAPNP to set the io(0x230) and irq(5). Then modprobe
eepro io=0x230. It autodetected the irq as 5.

Since installing 2.2.9 I haven't been able to get it to work. I imagine it is
something to do with the PNP support in the kernel. I haven't actually been
able to find out how this works anywhere. Anyway I disabled the PNP (in kernel)
and used ISAPNP. This works with no errors. Then using modprobe I insert the
module. With just the io address as before it detects irq 10 (and doesn't
work). Even if this worked, irq 10 is used by the soundcard (which I don't know
how to set the irq of - sblive). So I stated irq as well as io in the options.
Still didn't work:( By this time the reluctant(ish) convert to Linux was saying
how much easier Windows is etc.

The errors that are given are:
IP multicast failed (3 times)
SIOCADDRT (expected this)

pinging just results in nothing (i.e. waits indefinately)

I am not sure if it was the kernel change that broke it. I just remember it
worked before and think it was with the old kernel (Suppose I should have tried
it as I still have the image + modules! - whoops).

Any help would be grately appreciated as I have no idea what to do. Tried
looking at the source, but it is over my head.

Sincere thanks to both of you who replied to my questions. I did go to
the site mentioned and downloaded the drivers. I'm sorry I failed to
mention the exact board type, but I am not sure of the manufacturer. The
type is Banshee (although when you look at it in system properties in
Windoze it shows "Vodoo Banshee"), all I knew for sure was that it uses
the 3DFX chipset.

The driver seems to work fine. I am trying to get my hands on KDE now. I
don't know if it is my setup or I am doing something else wrong, but I
seem to be stuck at a low resolution. Trying "<ctrl> +" does not seem to
change resolutions. I will have to investigate.

Thanks again.

hi there,
afaik that is not a linux-only problem. many users of win32-platforms have
reported similar problems. the ss7-chipsets are buggy, so the best to
expect from the authors is "yet another workaround" ;-)

Hello, I am in desperate need for 10 NICs for my RedHat Linux 5.2 boxes.

I have read the http://www.redhat.com/hardware page so please don't tell
me to look there.
I have had no luck in finding supported NICs for my RedHat Linux boxes.
Please, if someone could point me to a site that has supported NICs I
would be very very very thankful.
Thanks in advance
Vince.

I actually haven't used it yet, but from what it looks like, it comes with
its own XFree server (replacement binary for XF86_SVGA) that includes
GL support, if you install the correct libraries that also come with the
nVidia package. This means OpenGL Quake, Quake II, but not Quake III,
according to their documentation. Have a look at their site. They answer
quite a few questions.

All that is only necessary if you need to have the root file system on a
disk attached to the SCSI card. If the card is only for a scanner or such,
you can always load the driver after the system is booted. It should take
no more than an "options xxxx=yyy" line in /etc/conf.modules (where xxx is
the name of the driver, and yyy are the options.) Then at the end of
/etc/rc.d/rc.local you can add "modprobe xxxx" to load the driver.

Quite likely it is possible to autoload the thing by something like
"alias scsi=xxxx" or "alias char-major-zzz=xxxx" in conf.modules so that when
the kernel goes looking for it it is directed to the appropriate module.

Sorry to be so vague but my Linux system is at home and I'm at work. Unix
knowledge is all about where to start looking, in this case I would do
"man" on modprobe, conf.modules and insmod and start following the "see also"
links.

Adding hardware to a working PC is scary, even for experienced users, and
yes, it is easier under Windows.

Mind you that you should get a (pair of) good-quality slocket
adaptor(s) (e.g. Asus, Magic Pro). Previously, I used a cheapo
(<US$10 / piece) slocket adaptor and my system could only go up to
375MHz stably 450MHz was unstable completely. Other people using the
same slockets (even same motherboard) couldn't even get a stable
system when they're NOT overclocking. After replacing the cheapos
with high-quality ones, my system now runs 'mprime' damn stably. It
uses two Celeron 300A's, both overclocked to 450MHz.

Netscape can grow up to about 60M in normal use (with very large pages
with lots of pictures) plus quite a bit more used by the X kernel on
its behalf.

However Netscape 4.07 as it comes with RH5.2 also has a memory leak, it
occurs when composing an email message on Yahoo, and it can lose several
kilobytes PER KEYSTROKE. I just managed to stop my house mate from
crashing my machine when Netscape was at 226 megabytes and growing.
Since then I've hacked a little script which displays current Netscape
memory usage in a little windows so he can quit and restart if it goes
crazy. This only occurs when composing email messages on Yahoo.
