Hello,
I just upgraded to Kernel-2.4.2 from Kernel-2.2.14.
The new kernel-2.4.2 runs fine. Well, I saw APIC related error message in
/var/log/messages.
In Kernel-2.2.14, there was no error with APIC. Of cource, it was SMP enabled kernel.
I did kernel build two times under kernel-2.4.2. Well, there is no error while
building
kernel.
I'm doubt that the APIC error with kernel-2.4.2 is minimal effect to the system.
Is someone solve this problem?
Welcome any information,

I've got a similar problem to yours, in that if I install my video card ( S3
Virge DX ) and then install Linux-Mandrake 7.2. After all the setup
operations and configurations have been gone through my monitor does exactly
the same as yours.
The only way round it that I have found is to use another video card, in my
case a lowly ATI 1Mb job. This seems to work ok except for the colour bit
rate which is down to 256 colours. I then shut down the system take out the
ATI card, install the Virge and when it reboots it finds that the system has
altered. I then remove the configuration for the ATI card and it then finds
the Virge card, I set the colour depth and resolution and Hey Presto
everything works ok. Don't ask me how this seems to work because I've no
idea.
I hope that this can give you a pointer as to a solution for yourself. I'm
only just learning myself, so you probably need help from the more
experienced guys in here.
I'll be watching with keen interest for any posting to your query.

Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 14:45:09 GMT
Hi all,
I have been having problems with strange memory corruption in 2.4.
series of kernels. Within 48 hours after reboot I would get an odd
Oops or fs corruption which would seem completely unrelated to
video. I tried to figure out the reason. After gathering some
helpful hints from linux-kernel mailing list I started my testing.
1. tested hardware (RAM, HD...) - didn't find any problems.
2. started eliminating modules that are not part of the standard
kernel tree
- eliminated oss - no change, system still unstable
- removed NVdriver and started using nv driver that came with
XFree86-4.0.1
(WOW! all of sudden the box is running for ten days and there's
no corruption!)
- put NVdriver back, switched to nvdriver form Nvidia - Oops
within 48 hrs.
So, I have no choice but to believe that NVdriver kernel module (or
nvdriver binary) is the culprit. Has anybody seen anything similar,
or is it just me?

"ATA" is the proper name for what we often call "IDE". ATAPI is the "ATA
Packet Interface", which uses the ATA Packet command (which can send
arbitrary data) to send SCSI commands to the drive. An ATAPI device
thinks like a SCSI internally, and just has an extra layer on its
interface.
CD-ROM drives use the SCSI MMC (multimedia commands) command set, which,
I believe, includes the eject command. If the ATA protocol doesn't
include such a command, then I guess the drive you mentioned either can't
be ejected via software, or does it through a custom (packet) command.

Subject: Lexmark Z32 oddnes

Hiya folks,
I've got a lexmark z32 attached (parport) to my i686 running
SuSE v7.0. After I downloaded the driver rpm from the
lexmark web site everything seemed to install nicely.
It prints if i point AbiWord to lpr -P lexmarkz32, same thing
for gedit (I usually use gnome 1.2 and sawfish). However,
I can't print from emacs or nedit. Also typing ;
lpr -P lexmarkz32 README.txt (for example)
simply makes the printer beep and then not print anything.
After these failed prints lpq reports an empty queue.
Has anyone seen this kind of problem?
Thanks in advance

Subject: Partitioning harddrive with FIPS
I was using FIPS to try to split my one partition on my harddrive into
two (so I could install Linux). However, part way through the process it
tells me that my last cylinder isn't free. I already defragged my
harddrive and (like the FIPS doc says) I searched for IMAGE or MIRROR
files but I couldn't find any. Does anyone know what I can do?
Also, in case you need them, here are the values returned from chkdsk:
4,978,400 kilobytes total disk space
1,617,884 kilobytes free
4,096 bytes in each allocation unit
1,244,600 total allocation units on disk
404,471 available allocation units on disk
655,360 total bytes memory
606,192 bytes free

I'm trying to add a printer to my RedHat 6.2 system, because the samba

Looking through DMESG I get the following message;
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
lp0 on fire
any ideas/tips on getting my printer installed and working?
Thanks

Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 17:14:47 GMT
I am using LM7.2. I had some free space between my Win95 and linux
partition. I used "cfdisk" and created a small (20Mb) Logical partition at
the end of free space. When I rebooted afterwards, Linux wont boot up and
hangs with a message "Kernal panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:05".
Nothing more can be done. The book I refer just mentions that it is a kind
of emergency landing (??!!), but no more info about how to correct.
I have no data at all so nothing to worry, I am only in trial & error
learning stage.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: Sound: Creative AudioPCI128 problems
Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 18:33:07 +0000
Hello folks,
I am in the process of trying to setup Linux on some spare kit. I
acquired a Creative AudioPCI128 soundcard, in the belief that being of
SoundBlaster origin, it should install and operate without much grief.
When I run sndconfig, it reports that "Ensoniq|5880 AudioPCI has been
detected" and gives me no option but to continue. When I hit the OK
button it then tells me that "The Ensoniq|5880 AudioPCI is not
supported".
The Sound HowTo indicated that if I switch off Plug-&-play on the
motherboard then I may get the card recognised - but it doesn't. I tried
installing a borrowed 8 bit SoundBlaster card, and then sndconfig duly
presented me with a convient list of sound cards to match against - but
if I install mine, it simply insists that it is an Ensoniq|5880
(whatever that is), and then that it is not supported. Is an
Ensoniq|5880 an unbadged Creative AudioPCI128? And why won't sndconfig
give me a list of cards to choose from when I have switched off P&P?
This is really frustrating. My knowledge of "other" operating systems is
reasonably deep, but the Linux/Unix environment is still somewhat alien
to me. If anyone recognises what my problem is, or how to work around
it, then please keep it in simple terms! Maybe someone has the
configuration setting for a Creative AudioPCI128 which I could import?
The technical necessities are:
Redhat 7.0 - Kernel 2.2.16-22
sndconfig version is 0.57
The motherboard is a Soyo 5EHM V1.2 with Award BIOS
Processor is AMD K6-2/450 with 32Mb RAM
Needless to say, any helpful advice would be most welcome!
Thanks, Dave
