Subject: Help: Dell vs. Cumetrix - Trying to decide on computer for Linux
Date: Wed, 09 Jun 1999 11:59:21 -0500

Hi,

I need to buy a computer for home use and to run Linux. I first looked
at DELL as I have used DELL computers at work and have been satisfied
with their hardware and service. But for home use they are somewhat
expensive for me.

I had decided on a DELL configuration (details below) and was about to
place an order when I read an Infoworld article about CUMETRIX on the
web.
What is particularly exciting is that they are going for Redhat
certification which
means if certified,I can be confident that Linux (or at least the
RedHat) distribution can run on those machines.

http://www.infoworld.com/cgi-bin/displayStory.pl?99068.picumetrix.htm

Building a Cumetrix system (details below) similar to the one I had
decided on with Dell, I save up to about $600 which is a lot. I am
trying to decide pros and cons of these alternatives. My questions:

* Has anyone bought from Cumetrix?
If yes,
* What do you know/think about Cumetrix customer service?
* What do you know/think about Cumetrix hardware?
* What is it about DELL that would justify its higher cost? Quality?
Service?

Any advice that would help be decide would be greatly appreciated. The
details for the two systems are given below:

Possible with a lot of effort, but why not do it the easy way.
Plug both computers into a network, mount the linux CD on the HP box,
and do a network install using ftp or nfs.

You will need to either create a boot floppy or fix up the HP box as
a boot server.

I also had similar problem.

In my case, when I typed linuxconf in an xterm (I assume you did this), it
always showed the TTY display inside the xterm.
I had changed my machine name from localhost to something else. This
caused problem with my DISPLAY settings. When I corrected the
DISPLAY setting, the problem was solved.

What isn't well covered? A 100MHz FSB means PC100 memory. Period.
There are some exceptions in boards that will run the memory bus at the
AGP clock speed (or a multiplier of) instead of the full PC100, but
anybody who doesn't populate with PC100 memory now is wasting money (PC100
memory is now cheaper than PC66).

Why don't you edit the file /etc/inittab to let your computer boot into

Not especially for xdm, but there is for X :-)
Just run your screensaver from the file: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 :

#!/bin/sh
# $XConsortium: Xsetup_0,v 1.3 93/09/28 14:30:31 gildea Exp $

Hmmm! I'm using SuSE 6.0, and the apsfilter setup has an entry called
stcolor (Stylus Colour). All I did was select that and assign it to lp0, and
my Stylus 600 prints from Star Office just fine.

I'm not sure if apsfilter is a SuSE thing or generic Linux, but it seems to
be the bit if software that converts post-script files into something a
normal printer can handle.

Hope this points you in the right direction.....!

could it also be that when you try to boot from hard disk, the root
device
is not correctly specified? Check if your kernel detects SCSI stuff
(easy -
you should spot "scsi : 1 detected total" or something like that - can't
remember), and if it does, check the boot parameters (with loadlin, it's
something like "loadlin zimage root=/dev/sda5", with lilo, it's just the
root=/dev/sda5 part appended at boot).

I agree that you can't beat the deal you get from overclocking a Cel 300a
to 450MHz. But overclocking doesn't always work and not everyone WANTS
to overclock. Any overclocked system is less stable than a non-overclocked
one. And many people will buy pre-built systems that won't necessarily
be overclock compatible.

I haven't had the best expierences with Umax scanners. The SCSI cards
that they come with aren't SCSI cards at all, and only work with that
scanner. I've also tried to hook a number of Umax "SCSI" scanners up to
real SCSI cards, but they never seem to work. We have some real HP
scanners, that are a bunch more expensive, but they are SCSI, and seem
to work pretty well.

At least you guys were able to get Linux up and running in the first
place! I have the Initio INI-9100AS card, it came with my Sony cd burner.
I havent had a problem with it until trying to install Linux off a cd-rom.
I burned the .iso of Mandrake Linux v5.3 (which is basically redhad 5.2 i
believe). The Initio stuff is not in the list of possible SCSI cards in
mandrake's install. So basically, my problem is that i cant get mandrake to
recognize my scsi card, which in turn would enable to me to actually perform
the installation of linux off the cdrom.

I know there have been similar discussions in other threads, but the
difference is that the people in the other threads already had linux
installed... i've never used linux in my life and want to learn more about
it, but i need to be able to install it first :) Any advice is
appreciated, thanks.
