DSL/CABLE ROUTER  -->
CABLE MODEM (cross over cable to modem, if required)
LINUX MACHINE (patch cable to router)
WINDOWS MACHINE (patch cable to router)

Set IP forwarding to the open ports on Linux machine so you can make
those servives available.

I cannot see why disabling CPUid would protect
anybodys privacy. To get the CPUid a program
would have to be runing on the CPU, in that
case the program would have access to lots of
more sensible information than the CPUid.

MAC addresses of ethernet cards on the other
hand are sent over the network every time you
send a packet.

Can anybody explain WHY people are so unhappy
about the CPUid?

Lets say that it is much more up to you
what MAC a program "sees" than it is for CPUids.

Try www.dabs.com

Here too. It's one of the few pieces of hardware that needs basically
no configuration under unix (it's seen as a standard lpd queue) but
requires a 15MB download for Windows :-)

Hmm... short read while scanning the inodes. This sound like a
hardware (HD) problem. You really lost the access to that block on the
harddrive it seems. e2fsck will only repair the state of the
filesystem so all still existing file will be ok. Have a look in the
/var/log/* files if the ide-driver says anything about harddrive
problems.

Maybe some lost blocks were copied to the lost+found directory?

Filesystem itself is ok again, but there is a block which is not readable.

I don't think that will help. Wit SCSI drives I would have suggested
to try scsiinfo and setting the read retry to a high number and hope
for the best, but IDE.... I've no idea what one could try.

AFAIK, it still has this problem. But this just means that the partition
containing /boot (you can do an own /boot partiton of a few megabytes if
you want) has to be completely below

Couldn't you do the same with CPUids?

Subject: Problem with interrupt of SCSI controller and ncr53c8xx module
Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 16:19:57 +0100

I have tried to install RedHat 6.2 on a HP Kayak XAs with Symbios
SCSI =

controller, but the module 'ncr53c8xx' could not be loaded. The
same CD
did install on several other 'identical' Kayak's.
The correct module is detected, but fails to initialize, because
irq=3D0
is detected.

  ncr53c8xx: at PCI bus 2, device 4, function 0
ncr53c8xx: 53c875E detected with Symbios NVRAM
  ncr53c875E-0: rev=3D0x26, base=3D0xfdfff800, io_port=3D0xe800, irq=3D0
                                                         ^^^^^

With Win2k that board has IRQ 16!! ( I always thought only IRQ
0-15 exist on PC
hardware), but I found another working linux system with irq=3D17. =

I tried at least three differrent RH6.2 versions (original, with
updates until
may 2000 and the Recovery CD of HP Visualize with updates to
october 2000).
The same error happend with the RH 7.1 beta (Wolferine). The only
difference had been,
that there was no error message during the text/curses mode.

On the other Kayaks the the ncr53c8xx module is loaded with: =

   ncr53c8xx: at PCI bus 2, device 4, function 0
ncr53c8xx: 53c875E detected with Symbios NVRAM
   ncr53c875E-0: rev=3D0x26, base=3D0xfdfff800, io_port=3D0xe800, irq=3D9=

or

   ncr53c8xx: at PCI bus 2, device 4, function 0
ncr53c8xx: 53c875E detected with Symbios NVRAM
   ncr53c875E-0: rev=3D0x26, base=3D0xfdfff800, io_port=3D0xe800,
irq=3D17

Any hints, how this problem may be solved?

Thanks in advance

Linux does _not_ have a problem with large disks.
Older versions of Lilo have the problem, which is easily resolved
by either (a) creating a separate boot partition within 1024 cylinders,
or (b) downloading and using the latest lilo.

First question: are you connected to an ISP who provides for DHCP? When I set
up my system I had it all ready before the cable modem guy showed up and it
connected right away.

If that is the case, then you need to review the choices made in your
configuration when you recompiled your kernel. I can send you my .config file
if you like. I use a different card but otherwise it should be the same setup.

As far as I understand Intels specs CPUID will not
trap. This seems logical to me because the returned
values of CPUID depend on what you put into EAX
and different CPUs support different values for EAX.
So, illegal values for EAX simply return undefined
results and don't trap. Only processors not supporting
CPUID at all will raise an ill. op. exception.

Are there specific settings that one should switch when compliing a

Also, should certain parameters be flagged when compiling programs

Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 16:18:57 GMT

I recently did the EC10 100uF -> 1000uF capacitor upgrade and thought I
would share the test results.

The test was to load up network and disk I/O without any lockups:
a) copy a 1 GB file repeatedly between ide0 (UDMA2/PIIX4) and ide3
(UDMA4/HPT366).
b) at the same time ftp a 250MB file from another machine across full
duplex 100bT repeatedly. These loops ran for over an hour.

Before the EC10 upgrade, any significant disk or network I/O would
freeze the board hard requiring a reboot. After, zero lockups. EC10
fix is highly recommended. Note that the recommendation from Abit is
6.3v, 1500uF which is slightly different than what I used.

I am running two AMD 450's on Alladin-V with no problems (Giga- Byte GA-5AX
& 5AA - Baby AT and ATX) ATI AGP cards and 196 / 384 Meg Ram, both are very
stable. You might have some other problem, loose something, HD fighting
each other on the same cable shared IRQ stuff, - make shur IRQ is in Level
not Edge Mode on these boards.

Cases are cheap so if you buy a new MB go ATX - For my next system I may go
right to intel for an 815EEAL MB with 733 PIII
$300

PS I just got a K6-2+ 450 from Tiger for $45 and have clocked it at 110x5 it
is not to far behind a a Duron 600

: I use an HP-Colorado 5GB ATAPI tape drive on my linux system
: without problems. I have ide-tape support as a module and use
: afio to make the backups (I've also used tar successfully in the
: past). I can start with a blank tape; no need to create dummy
: backups. Nor have I had any trouble with DSC timeouts. I did
: try taper a long time ago but never got it to work with the HP
: drive (it worked fine with the Exabyte SCSi drive on my other
: machine, though). Perhaps the problem is with KBackup and
: taper? Afio and tar aren't pretty, but they do seem to work.

I've had a Seagate Tapestor 8000 (4GB not counting compression) for
around five years now and used it happily with whatever the current
kernels have bben since then. I control the tape with mt-st, I make
backups using tar, and I just write the backups to tape (or read them
from tape) using cp. Low tech, but it works well. (Actually, tar
isn't low tech; the "listed incremental" feature makes incremental
backups easy.)

With any tape drive, one thing to keep in mind is to
*rentension*the*tape*! Several times.

I've written scripts to do all the creating of tar files, copying
files to tape, keeping track of the whole process so you can ignore it
while it's running, etc., and I just put a couple of my scripts at

  http://www-math.mit.edu/~psh/tapedrive/

Take a look, in case it helps. Basically, you have to retension a
lot, and remember that it can take a few seconds (usually less than
five seconds) after an operation before the tape is actually ready for
the next operation (that's built into the scripts). Those scripts
define some directories and files near the top of the scripts; if
they're not self explanatory, write and ask about them.

Hope this helps,
Phil
