Won't be dual athlons, I didn't think AMD had the SMP support in them either.
> Perhaps a 4xXeon or something. But I don't exactly know if the P-III-Xeons
> also support more than 2 CPUs.
I've seen some 4xXEON systems at work. Some of the bigger Unisys "PC based"
machines go to 8x or 10x
My home machine is dual Celeron 400's on a second-hand GB 686DLX. Rather
flakey, but that is probably the board.
NT4: Keyboard and mouse lock up after random interval, machine requires power
removed totally.
Win2k: Same as above, network driver can often go funny too. Tried several
NIC's with same result.
Linux 2.2: Motors along BUT network driver crashes and starts looping with
errors. Several NIC's tried with similar results. NOTE: Kernel reports
different MTRR values on the CPU's.
I have not yet found anyone interested in helping to track down my problem
with the tulip and boomerang drivers. It's probably something nastier,
triggered by the hardware doing strange things.
Linux 2.3: .50 kernel won't even boot, SMP code starts looping and spraying
out the same error. Could be the bios is screwing things up. No surprise, GB
don't seem capable of getting the idea that something is wrong with their SMP,
especially on an older board. The BIOS has trouble even detecting both CPU's,
sometimes a few reboots are needed...
Win98: Runs fine. Using it right now.
SMP appears to be the problem. Oh well, it was worth the money for the
on-board SCSI. My next dual-CPU board will NOT be a GB, I'll give ABIT or ASUS
a go.

Are you sure about that? I looked at the release today, too. I saw
the 'r128' driver, but saw nothing there about the 'pro' variation.
Just hopped over to a mirror to check...
http://www.rge.com/pub/X/XFree86/4.0/doc/HTML/r1284.html
lists the 'reported working' cards:
Rage Fury AGP 32MB
XPERT 128 AGP 16MB
XPERT 99 AGP 8MB
Nor was there anything about the 'pro' variation in the rest of the
document. Rage 128 is on the 'underway' section in the DRI document.
Perhaps the 'pro' is supported. I suspect it'll be necessary to look
at the source to be sure. I'd presume support is forthcoming. It may
be possible to get support now through the framebuffer driver.

I lost a machine in a similar fashion a few weeks ago. I was
re-organizing some of my machines and was going to put windows on a
machine that had previously running as a Linux server. After being
off for several days, I powered it up to the sound of sparks and the
smell of burning components. Turns out every component in the box was
fried with the exception of RAM. I did a post-mortem and discovered
that the fan in the power supply has seized. I wonder if this caused
a short inside the PS which caused it to overvoltage on the outputs.
Or perhaps the machine decided that death was better than windows...

actually get my modem up and running - now that I do I am in grave doubts
that it'll actually work. I've checked the list at /~gromitkc and yup - my

Is there _any_ likelyhood that I'll be able to get it to work (I've tried -
the kernel won't acknowledge it) or should I just buy another cheap one that
definitely will?

The device/mountpoint does exist in the /dev directory but at boot
there's no mention of sdb and doing 'fdisk /dev/sdb' returns
Unable to open /dev/sdb

Hmmm... but the controller is set to emulate 2 devices, the Amibios at
boot finds the devices and list them like
HBA ID LUN
================
1 0 0
1 0 1

My thought too...

The toggle I found says 1 or 2G (2.2.12)

I'm not currently at the machine, but IIRC /proc/scsi/ had 0, 1 and 2
(the controller has three channels) but there was only any interesting
stuff in '1' (various numbers which for 0 and 2 were all 0) which I'd
presume is correct given the bios reporting of both 'disks' being on
HBA 1.

I had an APC Back-UPS 400 on my old machine for about three years. It was
about time for a new battery, and APC had a good trade-in deal, so I
upgraded to a Smart-UPS 420. My new machine has an APC Smart-UPS 1000.
These work fine with the genpowerd program or you can download APC's
fancy PowerChute program. I have used both. I run the PowerChute now
because it can do some automatic testing that genpowerd does not, and has
a gee-whiz graphical control panel that I run sometimes when I get bored.
Of course, I never tried any other UPS boxen, so I cannot make a
comparison.
The APC Smart-UPS 420 worked very well for me last summer when the local
power substation blew out 1/2 of its transformer capacity. Power sagged,
and went on and off like a yoyo for about three days. The machine coasted
through the short (< 5 minutes) drops, and powered down and came back up
correctly, for each of these "oppotrunities." I am very satisfied with
APC products.

I don't know anything about what you are doing with the cable, but to
start linux in X, you edit /etc/inittab.
Change the 3 to a 5 in this:
id:3:initdefault:
Above that line in my inittab is a list of numbers that could be
used. They are not the same in every distribution. I use RedHat; so 5 is
the number for X11 in mine.

I have a VA Linux Systems StartX-MP machine with a Soundblaster card
and 2 CPU's. I am unable to get this board to work correctly most of
the time, though I think the board itself is OK. It runs VA Linux
Systems version of Red Hat 6.0.
1.) I can play music CD-ROMs correctly.
2.) The UMP plug-in for Netscape pretends to run, but the sound
output is very choppy: gaps and such.
3.) The real-audio player, either as a plug-in to Netscape, or
stand-alone, does not work correctly. It puts out a few pops, but
that is all.
4.) dmesg says this (many times): "Sound: DMA (output) timed out -
IRQ/DRQ config error?" I have no doubt they are right. Anyone know
the correct way to run sndconfig? I made it work just fine on my
other single-processor machine running Red Hat Linux 6.0.

Since "LI" is not related to the 1024 problem, it may be that the
extended bios calls won't help. My boot loader, nuni, boots from the
Ultra66 just fine. There is no chance for a geometry mismatch because
nuni doesn't use geometry or cylinders. I'm running on the Ultra66
right now, but just in ordinary udma33 mode. You can find nuni by going
to freshmeat.net and putting nuni in the search box.

Had a bit trouble first, but then found a new Xserver on the net that works
really good. Try
http://www.s3p.co.uk/
and look for the s3savage-1.0-10.tar.gz
Cheers
