I have an internal modem PCI called : SupraExpress 56i V PRO
make by DIAMOND.
Under Windows98 it works : Port = COM3
Interrupt = 10
and the 'DOS Support' menu (under 'Propriety') says :
for DOS application : COM Port = COM3
Base Address(Hex) = 03e8
IRQ = 4.
Under Linux (SuSE 5.3) the modem don't work.

I am *very* new to Linux. I have a USR Courier v.34 external modem. I am
trying to set it up with mucho problems. Please note that this is the first
real OS I have used. I have been a sole user of
MSWin up until now. I am using RH6.0 and KDE is my GUI of choice. I have
copied my ppp files from /usr/doc to /usr/bin and edited appropriately, also
edited hosts and resolv.conf files. KPPP
ID's my modem, will query it, dials my ISP tries to log on, quits and
redials again and again and again..... I just really need a step by step
procedure, have read the "How-tos and the man pages, but am doing nothing
but getting more confused . If I use minicom I can get to my ISP's server
type in my ID and PW then get a NETWORK/LOGIN as KEYWORDS, If I login again
I get a No CARRIER response. Beats me......

I just installed RH6.0 on my system and It's locking up so hard that I have

card, but I'm not sure what to do.
I have a Cirrus Logic AGP card on an AMD K-2 400. Basically, it's
recognized during installation and setup installs XFree86-SVGA, everything
works for a couple minutes, and then it locks up. It's running at
1024x768x24. Incidentally, setup set the default color depth to 32 bit.
When I set it to 24, it seemed like it took longer to actually lock.
Any ideas?

If it's a USR Winmodem then forget it. Winmodems don't work with
Linux. You will need to get a new modem that is Hardware driven
rarther thansoftware driven.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm currently setting up a Digiboard PC/4 and PC/8 card (in two
seperate RedHat based Linux boxes, running 2.0.35). Upgrading the
kernel isn't an option right now because of the database software we're
running at this stage.
These are not intelligent or extended cards -- they do not have memory
or need special support. The 4 port (as an example) is configured with
ports 1-4 as 0x100, 0x108, 0x110 and 0x118. It has a status port on
0x140. All ports are on IRQ 4.
setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0x100 baud_base 38400 set_multiport ... etc.
I've got the masks and matches set for multiport support but I'm
getting a lot of messages on the screen... "kernel: rs port monitor
(single) irq 4: 0xff, 0xff" ... (also in /var/log/messages). The issue
is ... the ports don't work if I keep more than the first port enabled
on the board ... ie, the IRQ sharing isn't working properly. The full
PDF documentation on the board is at DIGI at
ftp://ftp.dgii.com/support/manuals/hardware/pcx/90029700A.pdf ...
... any help would be highly appreciated.

Couple o' notes.
a) Dejanews.com is good for common Q's like this.
b) http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html has been pretty heavily
plugged. The 'SupraExpress 56i Pro" (no V?) is listed as a WinModem.
c) Searching the manufacturer's site, www.diamond.com...
hmmm, that site doesn't discuss the 56i Pro.
Switching to the German site, (swap the extension), specifically
mentions
"Kosteng|nstiges controllerless PCI-Design"
Hmmm. Substituting 'eng' for 'ger' in the URL... (interesting.
'ger', not, say, 'deu'? but I digress), and it says:
"Cost effective controllerless PCI design"
Read: paperweight.
If the 'V' simply means, say, 'voice', and not a major, major design
change, then...

I've heard rumours from a coworker that the Promise Ultra/66

I think he found this info on the RedHat site.

Hi,
I have a Diamond SpeedStar A50 that has SiS6326 chipset. It took me a while
to configure, but it works perfectly now. I can get 1024x768 resolution in
16-bit color. The three options that I had to set manually had something to
do with acceleration, cursor and "blt". If you want, I can send you my

For a "fairer" comparison, you should compare the price of P-II 300
with Celeron 300A, and compare the price of P-II 450 with Celeron 450
(extrapolated from the prices of 333, 366, 400, 433).
I think the overclockability should be considered as a bonus if you
want to make the comparison "fairer". It shouldn't be counted in the
price comparisons, because some people insist on not overclocking the
CPU's.
Well... this is just my personal opinion on how we should compare the
prices.. Even with such a "fairer" comparison, you'd still find
Celerons the price winner. The price of building a *dual*-Celeron
system (not overclocked) is comparable to the price of a *uni*-P2
system.

Vaisbrot> I saw somewhere than because of Linux's better

It's the opposite. Linux's process scheduler wisely make use of the
HLT instruction to tell the CPU "you can take a short break" when
there is nothing useful to do. (Contrarily, win95/98 always keep the
CPU busy by requesting "Hey, you want rest? No way. Find something
to do: check if there is mouse activity and if the keyboard has been
pressed, or run a CPU-intensive screensaver [ some of which actually
deserving the name "screen-killer" instead]." even when there is no
useful things to do.)
As a result, it is reported by many people consistently that the CPU's
feel cooler when they're using Linux, than when they're running Win9x
and Win NT.
Vaisbrot> I've got a 433 Mhz Celeron with a fan on a 66 Mhz bus
Vaisbrot> (6.5 * 66 = 433). My motherboard can go up to 8*66
Vaisbrot> (can't change the bus frequency).
Wrong. With Celerons, you can't change the multiplier. You can only
change the bus frequency. Some motherboards support non-standard FSB
frequencies of 75MHz and 83.5MHz, in addition to standard 66 and 100
MHz. So, you can try them out.
Vaisbrot> Do you mean that if I o/c my CPU to 500 MHz (7.5*66), it
Vaisbrot> will work without overheating with Linux too ?
No. You may try 6.5*75 = 492MHz. It may not work. This depends on
luck (and also the combination of slocket + motherboard).
To go higher, you would have to use 6.5*83.5 = 543MHz. This is very
unlikely to work. Some people estimate that 66MHz FSB-class Celerons
cannot work stably over aroud 470MHz. So, if you can go to 500MH
(e.g. C333-->505MHz), you are very lucky (success rate is only 10%).
450MHz is very stable, though. That's why people sue C300A. Bumping
the FSB to 100MHz brings a 300A to 4.5x100 = 450MHz, which works with
a very high success rate.
Vaisbrot> I can't believe it ! :)
And you shouldn't because your information is wrong.

If you want to play safe (e.g. for a mission-critical system), then
don't overclock. But even then, Celerons are still much cheaper. For
the price of ONE P2, I can get TWO Celerons of the same clock rate.
So, how can P2 beat Celerons in terms of price? I guess TWO Celerons
won't be slower than ONE P2 of the same clock rate, provided that your
system always have more than 2 processes ready for the CPU to serve.
So, I would rather build a dual-Celeron 400MHz system instead of a
uni-PII 400MHz system. I would rather spend more money for extra (and
better RAM) than a second PII. (BTW, a hybrid dual system with
PII+Celeron is possible.)
Dave> Any

I did hold this belief, until I've successfully overclocked my 300A's
to 450MHz. It has been running 'mprime' (c.f.
http://www.mersenne.org/), a CPU-intensive program for 5 days without
any problems. (In fact, mine is a dual-Celeron system, and I'm
running two 'mprime' processes concurrently.)

I just got a Smart & Friendly Speedwriter Plus. It is an ATAPI drive. I

the SCSI-ATAPI stuff is working. (?)
