Don't know about 1) but with regards to 2), if you call SGI support
(1-800-800-4SGI) their phone-robot offers to direct you to linux support.
So, my guess is, yes.

Nick,

Many thanks for taking an interest!

Under anything at all! Even cat /dev/mouse provides no
output. I tried finding the mouse using mouse-test as
well. Nothing works.

It doesn't work under gpm either.

Yes, it goes....

PS/2 auxiliary pointing device detected -- driver installed.

But infact the driver prints this a kernel global variable is set to 0xAA.
Here's the code from drivers/char/psaux.c on a 2.0.35 kernel.

        if (aux_device_present == 0xaa) {
printk(KERN_INFO "PS/2 auxiliary pointing device detected -- driver
installed.\n");

the variable aux_device_present is asigned its value in
arch/i386/kernel/setup.c

                aux_device_present = AUX_DEVICE_INFO;

this apears to be unconditional on a call to the function setup_arch
and doesn't appear to look at hardware at all.

Windows says it's interupt 12, but also says the io-address is Automatic.
Could this mean the port is PnP?

>What does dmesg say?

Nothing in addition to the above message.

I greatly appreciate your help because I'm taring my
hair-out over this one.

Thanks again,

Donald.

Dear reader,

I've a HP 720C colour deskjet and I have SuSE 6.1 runing on my computer.
During instalation of the OS I had to choose a printer. Because HP 720C
isn't on the list, I've tried other printers (like cdjet550) on /dev/lp0
but neither will print.

The solution may be quite simple (I hope so) but being a newbie, things
are not that easy to me

Tank you in advance !!

I did think of that. However, if you need a 4U external drive cabinet
for every 4 2U servers, we're back to square one (12RU for 4 servers).
I'm tempted to roll my own with a passive backplane board and one of
those dual-PII/PIII single board bx computers, but I'd rather use an
existing design if I can get away with it.

of course a modem will send and receive analog over the channel.
input and output from the user may be either analog (e.g., your fm
radio) or digital (e.g., a mil-std-188-165 compatible). a digital
modem tends to hit the digital domain sooner rather than later and
perform the bulk of the signal processing digitally rather than in
analog circuitry.

rf downconversion will probably always be analog. around here at
work, a digital modem is one which does the signal processing
digitally. i.e., phase derotation, timing synchronization and the
matched filter is digitally processed. this is as opposed to analog
matched filtering.

pots limits you to about 3000 baud on the line. to get more than
2400 bps you need a high order signal constellation, i.e., qam. i
think any of the qam based modems have to be digital in order to be
pratical.

I have a sound card installed in my Linux box that when a wave file is
played it sounds like an echo chamber, repeats a segment of sound 3
times then moves on. It is an Aztech Sound card that came with the
system. I have all of the jumpers set to the factory defaults, IRQ's 5
and 7, DMA 0 Address's of 330 and 220. I am running Redhat 6.0. When
I run setup I am able to hear the sound ok for both wav's and midi's. I

am not able to hear midi's at all though with a midi player, more
setting up for midi methinks so I am not concerned there (yet). Any
helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated and also if more
information is needed let me know.

The old Mitsumis often used IRQ 5 or 9 or 10; have you tried those?
(You could always open the case and look at the interface's jumper settings).

i have posted what i thought was a link to this information but after
checking i found the link to be dead so i will just copy it from the
printout that i made of it. i wish the link was good so the author
could get the proper credit but here is how to set up this card using
the frame buffer driver
first dont worry about setting up X during the install
When you first login as root edit your /etc/lilo.conf file. add the line
VGA=791
under the read-only line of the linux section, then exit and save then
type lilo -v
now reboot and you should have a resolution of 1024x768 and a neat
little penguin in the upper left corner. login as root and type the
following
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
rpm -Uvh XFree86-FBDev-3.3.3.1-49.i386.rpm
cd /etc/X11
rm X
ln -s /usr/X11R86/bin/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev /etc/X11/X

now you need to edit the XF86Config file, delete all the modelines(i
just remarked them out by placeing # infront of each line).now add this
to the area that has the different screen and server info
Section "Screen"
  Driver "FBDev"
  Device "My Video Card"
  Monitor "My Monitor"
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "default"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

Thats it if you do this you should ba able to run XWindows at 1025x768
hope this helps someone

I am having the same problem with a DJ722c and thought the issue was more

It seems, that the tape is at its end.
Try all of the following:
- Leave the tape in the drive an power-off and power-on your machine.
- mt rewind
- mt retension
- use another tape
- use another Kernel (I use 2.0.33 with the NS20 and it works great.)

I have set up two boxes with the ASUS P5A and AMD K6-2 chips
which run very decently. As mentioned by others UDMA
(or even Busmaster DMA) is not yet supported for the ALI chipset
of this board by the standard 2.0 or 2.2 kernels, thus disk access
will be slow (polled IO mode through BIOS, high CPU usage).
Nevertheless, it runs quite fast under the stable kernels.
However, an upgrade to the recent development kernel 2.3.5
activated busmastering, and I havent encountered problems so far.
As with any Super7 boards pick your PC 100 SDRAM wisely,
go for brand labels even if you pay 20% more for your memory.
That way you can avoid most of the headaches other people have.

I've been using an 8-port Cyclades since kernel v1.2.13 and it's
performed well. I believe Cyclades makes 16port cards also.
Cyclades cards also enjoy direct driver support in the existing
kernels.

Software raid is OK, but I did find one problem when I was using it

This might be especially a problem for a large web server (file space wise
that is)

With a Normal Linux install say. Web pages (files) don't seem to chew up
much space.

Mainly I think because Linux makes < 1k clusters (probably wrong term) on
the drive / partition. and a lot of html files gif's etc are really small.

So unlike other systems with say 8k / 32k clusters the space savings are
quite a lot, if you have heaps of web pages /gifs etc.

But with the software raid the min I could go was 4k clusters, straight away
I lost quite an amount of Hdd space using the same web sites.

But yes the software raid works quite good. But I don't use it now and
haven't for about a year so maybe things have changed since I last played
with it.

I use hardware raid now, mainly because I need the reliability / hot swap
features it provides.

Hope it helps

Take a look at Sangoma cards. (www.sangoma.com) They take T1/FT1 in,
integrate the CSU, and are supported with Linux. For configuration tips,
look at the Linux router project. (www.linuxrouter.org) You don't way
what's on the other end, but be aware that getting everything running
correctly can be very difficult. If possible, get a dedicated router and
make it work first to verify that the telco and ISP side are set up right.
Then "play." If you want to go with external CSU, take a look at Emerging
Technologies. I haven't had good experience with them, but they do have
Sync cards with Linux drivers.

    Good luck.

            Dan

I forgot to mention what the video is. Right now, the video card is a
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro w/ 4MB RAM. I was planning on keeping it,
though I am wondering if a newer AGP card is a better option. Anyone
tried them in Linux? Recommend a good one that is reasonably
inexpensive?

Thanks again!!!

Your new kernel image is probably located somewhere above the 1024th
cylinder (1135?) Lilo can only access data below the 1024th cylinder.
You probably created one big partition. Now you see why it is usefull
to create separate partitions. Atleast create a small partition for /
or /boot so that your kernels stay below that 1024 limit.
