sure thing. irqtune can be found at
<URL:http://www.best.com/~cae/irqtune/>
btw i use freshmeat to find software
<URL:http://freshmeat.net/>
put "irqtune" (or whatever you're looking for) in the find window and
punch return. hopepage, ftp-sites &c. it's *so* good.

the irq's don't transmit data as such. they just yank the cpu over to
a handler subroutine. since data transfer is done by dma or copying
shared regions or what-have-you, which interrupt got you there is
irrelevant.
hope this helps.

Hello All...
I am trying to get a linux box up and running and communicating with the

How do I find the resource settings in Linux??? I'm using an old
computer with lots of shared architecture crap, and I don't know where
to start.
Thanks in advance,

Microsoft have a new type of mouse called IntelliEye which uses optical
tracking but will work on just about any surface. I'm a bit worried that
they don't say any surface outright, "almost any" could mean something
like any as long as it's got a certain type of pattern and is scrubbed
clean every 5 minutes. They also only seem to be available in
right-handed contour, and I'd rather have a normal middle button than a
wheel.
Maybe John Winters could import a few of these Honeywell ones. Then
again, I'm not sure I'm that fussy about mice any more, my Pilot on the
novelty frog mousemat (for some reason this has one of the best plastic
surfaces I've tried, it's considerably more matt than most) is more than
adequate for mostly console use with the odd bit of X and gpm.

I am having exactly the same problem with my matrox mystique video card.

Does anybody have any suggestions.

This is what I had to do to get two network cards recognized.
I at first had the driver compiled into the kernel and had to
go back and compile it as a module. In the /etc/modules.conf
file I had to add:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x300,0x240
After that, they were both recognized.
I have a Slackware system running Kernel 2.0.36.
I also use loadlin to start the system from MS DOS. I have
the following line in a DOS bat file to start Linux with:
c:\loadlin\loadlin c:\loadlin/zimage root=/dev/hda2 ro hdc=cdrom ro
ether,5,0x300,eth0 ether,11,0x240,eth1
The above is all one line. Whether this was required or not, I'm not
sure. I have not taken the time to try and boot without the ether
parameters.

Hi Mike,
I've experienced exactly the same problem, this it what causes it.
I'm assuming that you use KDE ? Well, I do, and as part of the KDE
startup when you login, a program called 'autorun' is started. this
works in a similar way to 'auto insert notification' in Windows, it
checks to see if a CD is present, and then mounts it.
Trouble is, when there is no CD, you get the above error messages. You
can stop 'autorun' from starting by commenting out the line in the
/usr/bin/startkde. A better solution would probably be to remove the
execute permission in the autorun executable, since this is what the
script checks for.
Hope that helps !
Andy

check the laptop howto out - gives you pointers
most installation problems are only with the latest hardware, but if you
know how to find, dowload, extract & install modules & recompile the kernel
then this shouldnt present a problem.

I know I posted this before, but I forgot to mention that when I try to
start x, it either freezes (and I must shutdown cold) or if IU leave just
the interlace mode I could use with my old card, it gives an error no
valid modes found. Xconfigurator, when probing, says no valid modes at 8,
16 or 24 found!
MY orignal letter was:
I had been running 2 hard disks, one with Windows 98, the other with
Redhat 5.2. I just got a new machine, and took my drives to put in it.
This ATX mothrboard came with a trident 3d blade AGP graphics card.
Nothing I do can make Linux work in X. I found that this card is on the
unsupported list. I guess i don't know these ATX machines well, as I
thought I could just switch cards back to my old Trident #D IMAGE 975.
Well, I found you can't just do it. I don't know if this board must have
an AGP display, or could I put in a pci display? I saw a setting or two in

Ah, but Microsoft's is different from Sun's. It claims to work on almost
any surface, so you don't have to put up with those awful metal mats and
felt mouse feet which keep ending up virtually welded together. I don't
remember the old Suns I used at Uni having a particularly bad problem
with this (ISTR the mats were some sort of laminate, not metal, ICBW),
so I had fond memories of the Sun ones and when I found out about a
cheapish Atari/Amiga optical mouse I bought one and made and adaptor for
my Acorn. It suffered badly from "sticking", and was also overly
sensitive to being used at an angle to the pad, so it went back; it also
suffered from very occasional phantom button presses when I wasn't
touching it, so that made a good excuse for the supplier ;). The Mouse
Systems PS/2 mouse I bought later was OK with the angle thing (as was
the old Sun), but did have the stickiness problem, so that had to go
back too, after much arguing with the supplier.
The MS IntelliEye should not have those problems in theory, I've no idea
how effective it is in practice though.

Folks,
In order to get your graphics card to work in X, you must have an X server
version that supports the graphics chip. For GeForce DDR GPU you will need to
get one of the latest versions of XFree86's X server, which is either ver 3.3.6
or ver 4.0. XFree86 recommends ver.3.3.6 beacuse it's a stable version, whereas
ver 4.0 is still in work (although it does a great job for me!)
Hope this will help you.

Well, I don't know how much I can help except to say that AFAIK there's
no problem installing onto >hardware< raid which is what I believe you
have. I just installed RH 6.1 on a Mylex Acceleraid setup for Raid 5
and it installed just fine. The point is that hardware Raid looks like
a single large drive to whatever OS is being installed. I would suggest
that you make a separate /boot partion first and then /, as you'll have
the dreaded 1024 Lilo problem otherwise.
As for step by step, I just booted, jumped into the cards Raid bios, set
things up, rebooted and installed as usual. If your card does not have
onboard setup, you should be able to do it from DOS.
Best
