Hi,
If low power is vital and you are sure that you don't need any fancy
hardware, get an old cheap laptop. You can't upgrade them, and they
aren't fast for the money, but they typically have a 20W power supply,
compared to 200W+ for a desktop. Consider, though: if electricity cost
ten cents per KWh, a 250W power supply will take 4 hours to burn 10
cents worth of juice. That's 60 cents per 24 hour day, and won't break
most budgets. Perhaps the best argument for using a laptop is that they
are QUIET! If they have a fan, it's typically tiny and unobtrusive.
Get an older high-end laptop and hook it up to a larger monitor, and
you'll probably be pretty happy. One last thought: do you really need
it turned on 24/7/365? Can't it just be connected all the time, and
turned on when you want it? It does seem to be easier on the hardware
to keep it turned on all the time, but I don't think it's significant...
Anyway, good luck.

They are supported by the wd driver. Try a "modprobe wd", and if it
loads fine, configure your network. Take a look at the ethernet-howto,
there's some information about these cards.

Subject: Help With Correctly Mounting SCSI CDROM Writer
Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2000 15:13:26 -0500
Problem: when an external scsi cdrom writer is attached (through a
pcmcia card), the
system mounts the device, upon initial startup, to the same mount
directory of the internal cdrom player, using RedHat 6.2, kernel
2.2.16-3. For example, both the cdrom and the external cdrom writer
mount to /mnt/cdrom even though fstab clearly shows /mnt/cdromscsi as
the mount directory for the scsi.
Not sure if this is a /etc/rc.sysinit script problem or some other
problem.
What can I do to resolve this dual mounting problem?

Uh, that's not quite correct. The SHARE_IRQ feature is not meant to
work on standard onboard ports _unless_ these ports have non-standard
features that do allow for IRQ sharing. The CONFIG_SERIAL_SHARE_IRQ
option - following the Configure.help text in the kernel docs - just
allows this for specific devices:
"Some serial boards have hardware support which allows multiple dumb
serial ports on the same board to share a single IRQ. To enable
support for this in the serial driver, say Y here."
Typically, you can use this with dumb multiport cards such as
the AST 4port, the Cyclades cards etc. Note: Newer boards partially
do indeed provide the needed components to allow this, so it is worth
a try. On an old 486 board, however, this is pretty moot.

Hi,
Two thoughts:
First:
I made mine work by putting the appropriate line in /etc/fstab
dev/sda4 /mnt/zip vfat user,noauto 0 0
Create the /mnt/zip directory before you try to actually use it, of
course!
Then I put the following in my /etc/rl.d/rc.local file
#####my stuff to mount zip
insmod parport
insmod ppa
This worked under Mandrake 6.0 and 6.1
Second:
I had troubles with Mandrake 6.0 periodically failing to unmount the
drives! This meant periodic fsck's, and a lot of worry and irritation.
Mandrake 6.1 hasn't given me that problem. I'll soon be upgrading to
Mandrake 7.1, so we'll see how that one works.
While I had my rc.local open, here's a third thing I noticed. Might be
interesting to you. It made my box run a bit faster.
######My stuff to speed up the hard drive
hdparm -c1 -d1 -k1 /dev/hda
#####This roughly doubled the drive speed, from 2.86 MB/sec
#####to 5.82 MB/sec. Found in
######http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/hdtweak.html
##### or try man hdparm
Good luck,

OK the mbr has no bearing today-tomarrow or the next on network
communication. Anyone tells you otherwiz is lying! wht you've done is
perhaps tweeked a setting or puored a coffee over something to get it
running. The net and its hookups aren't 100% instant-on.
Thus you would have to give more info as to where the problem lays:
Do you use DHCP for and IP address or is it assigned?
What is the NIC card (brand, chipset that is on the NIC card?
Is it (the NIC card) PCI or ISA?
How many NIC cards (really not silly 'cause if you've two and you switch
the cable back and forth the prob is with arp and the NIC address not
timing out due to arp)
I hope this helps... Good Luck!

Cool.. you actually thought something built 4 months ago would have a
driver in a kernel built several years ago. Actually just surf to your
favourate linux web site... check the hardware comatipility list and see
what driver you'll need to run (trick it or download a newer driver) the
card. I hope you find the answer and that it works. Good Luck!

That could indicate lousy termination, not working or interitant working
devices. Try a differnt cable for the CDROM with exterior termination
(don't terminate at the cdrom).

New at what your doing eh? Goto linuxdoc.org and read up on RAID then go to RH
and read up on thier RAID (which by the way is one of the best implementations
IMHO of all the distros). Oh yah... RTFM!

The system freezes happen both when the CDROM is the only SCSI device
and termination is set, or when the SCSI hard drive is on the bus with it
set as terminator. Thus I don't think it has to do with termination, but
I will look into switching cables...thanks-Chuck

Subject: Using Promise Ultra66 in NORMAL mode (not LBA)
Date: 25 Aug 2000 17:54:16 -0400
I'm thinking of using a Promise controller on my Asus K7M Athlon motherboard.
The reason is that I can't get DMA to work reliably with this board.
It seems like Promise cards might be a good solution since they have
(relatively) uniform controller and bios chips.
Promise cards would also be good for software RAID.
The problem is that the Promise Ultra66 controller autodectects my drives as
LBA. I want to use NORMAL mode (to be compatable with my existing
filesystem). Usually you can set drives to LBA or NORMAL mode in the
motherboard Bios. Does anyone know how to do this with the Promise
controllers?
Thanks in advance,
Richard

Mandrake 7.1 installed Lyx (and KLyx, though the latter seems to
be one version behind Lyx?). I spent the weekend printing the help files
(aka, manuals) for Lyx. (K)Lyx looks to be a reasonable tool for routine
Latex usage -- not WYSIWYG, but not at the level of having to code the
