IIRC, linux doesn't have USB support, at least not in 2.2.x series of
kernels.

There is no driver yet. I would think that the current mach64 servers should
work for now. The development for that card is still underway, and should be
out by the end of summer or in the next release of XFree86

I was using an AMD K6-2 on a server for a while (we were testing
it to see if it could take on the role of our aging production
server). It crashed about once a week and occasionally scrambled
our hard-drive. (UDMA drives on a VIA MVP3 chipset.) We're
talking kernel panics.
We abandoned that platform and went with a low-end (333MHz) PII
on a 440BX chipset mainboard; the system has been up for 212 days.
(Same hard-drives, NIC, video adapter, etc., on a different
chipset mainboard with a different CPU.) We tried two retail-
boxed K6-2-333 chips and four different mainboards (one
Shuttle 591-P, two FIC VA-503+, and a DFI). No joy.
YMMV, of course.

You cannot have two default routes. Do you have a default route defined
for the Ethernet connection? Chances are you already have one for the PPP
connection. The best idea is to play with the routing table and ensure
that only local traffic goes to the intranet and everything else goes
through the modem.

no, but I do have a FIC 503+ w/ K6-2 350 and 96MB of 72- pin EDO
which works just fine. I also have an LS-120 and Maxtor 8.4 and
10GB drives. The LS-120 worked right off the install of both RH 5.2
and Caldera 2.2

USB support is in development (2.3.x kernel), and
has not been available to the stable kernel 2.2.x.
so, as far as I know, there are no patches for 2.2
Mouse support is said to be working in 2.3.x.
USB support is said to be *not for the faint of heart*.

You can nondestructively partition with a tool such as FIPS or partition
magic. Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 comes with a cut down partition magic
that can nondestructively resize your windows partition.
FIPS is free and you can use it with any distribution.

No. It is a seperate operating system that runs independently of
Windows 98.

You can access your windows 98 *FILES* when you boot into linux.

You can run Netscape in linux. If you want to use your bookmarks file
from windows, you need to copy the file into your linux installation.

yes, if you have a supported ethernet card or modem.
There's one thing you left out:
CHECK THAT YOUR HARDWARE IS SUPPORTED.
linux is no fun if your hardware is incompatible.
If you are not sure about your hardware compatibility, ask on the newsgroups.
COnsider using help groups such as comp.os.linux.setup for further support

It requires more than a special cable, it requires a special adapter
which acts like two USB devices back to back (one for each PC). These
do exist and there are drivers for them which use microsoft networking.
I guess it's just a matter of time before someone comes up with a linux
driver.

But I need to install Linux as my temp. operating

How does this work: do I lose all my files I have

Can I access Windows 98 from the Linux mode?
Can I access my internet browser (Netscape) if

Any help at all to these questions would save

Subject: help with lots of serial ports and linux and some windows
Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 20:38:29 PDT
I'm looking to buy a new computer and put linux on it. The only problem is
that it has just 1 serial port and 1 parallel port. I found this ISA card=
=20
with 4
serial ports and 2 parallel ports on it that I would install shortly after
buying the new computer. Dell tells me there's a limit of 2 active serial=
=20
ports
in windows. They won't say if that applies to all OSes (e.g. linux).
Could someone who knows about this stuff please read my conversation with=
=20
Dell
and tell me if I can access ALL the ports in Linux? if not, which ones can'=
t=20
I
access and why?
Many thanks,
Andrew de los Reyes
My conversation w/ dell from start to finish:
=======================================================
Is is at all possible to get more than one serial port on a Dell
Dimension XPS Txxx? I see COM1 is available, but what about COM2-4?
Are some hidden on the motherboard? Is it necessary to purchase a
PCI card w/ more serial ports?
Thank you for your time,
Andrew de los Reyes
=======================================================
Dear Sir,
Your system can accomodate
additional expansion cards; however, the system is limited to a
maximum of four logical ports; of which only two can be utilized at
one time. Your system currently has two enabled, one for the modem
(COM 2) and one free serial port.
If you require more than two active serial devices at one time;
currenty only two real solution exist to allow you to expand your I/O
capabilities. One way is to install an expansion card called an I/O
card that will allow you to increase the number of serial devices
attached to your system. We don't sell such a card, but any local or
internet computer provider should be able to sell you this card.
If you choose this route, I would suggest purchasing the PCI-based
version of this card. It's a little more expensive, but because
PCI-devices can share IRQs, you shouldn't have any problems installing
it. However, please be advised that although you can use this method
to increase the number of parallel devices, you may still encounter
problems in the operating system.
Another less elegant, yet still functional idea is to consider a
serial switch box, either active or passive. As long as your
requirement do not involve utilizing all serial devices at one time,
this should work very well for you.
I hope this answers your question; however, please feel free to
contact me if you have additional questions. Good luck and thanks for
buying a Dell!
Respectfully,
=A0

=======================================================
If I purchase an ISA based expansion card with 4 serial ports and 2
parallel
ports (the serial ports CAN share an IRQ with this card), you're
saying that
I can still only use 2 serial ports (out of 6 total) at once? Is this
restrication imposed by windows or by the hardware?
You mentioned there might be problems with the operating system. Is
this
windows only? As long as I can still access LPT1 and either COM1 or
COM2
(com1 =3D my own external modem, com2 =3D mandatory winmodem by dell) in
windows, I'll be happy. I DO want to access all the ports in other
OS/OSes;
that's why I want to know if there's a hardware hangup.
Thank you very much,
Andrew de los Reyes
=======================================================
Dear Sir,
This is correct for serial devices; however, you should have no
problem connecting two serial devices and up to two parallel devices.
Provided that the second parallel port isn't using IRQ5.
Unfortunately, while I know the above limitation to be a fact for
DOS/WINDOWS, I really can't speak for Linux, OS/2 etc...
Respectfully,

Get Red Hat 6.0 at www.cheapbytes.com (few bucks), or update your XFree86 to
the latest 3.3.3.1 version. RH6.0 will recognize your card at installation
time, I believe.

know the parameters, try all possibilities, the tool make a self test,
if you hear both channels if you're fine.

I had a very similar problem that I tracked down to a bad RAM chip. Not
sure how it effects the setup but my system would either lock-up or do a
spontaneous reboot during the install. Once I removed my two 32 Mb
simms, leaving two 16 Mb simms everything went fine. The RAM always
passed the bios memory test so there was no way to know anything was
wrong.
Hope this helps.

I don't know about the conf.modules, but you can start the the module by
inserting in the last line of rc.local the command:
/sbin/insmod ppa
/bin/mount -o defaults,uid=500,guid=100 -t vfat /dev/sda4
/mnt/zip # Just an example
I'm not sure but maybe you can compile the module ppa inside the kernel,
you got to compile a new kernel though ...

No, in Under Normal Conditions you wont loose any thing. BUT there must
be a free disk partition
to install Linux. All the info on "this partition" will be lost since
the dos file system will be replaced by
ext2 file system. Other partitions will remain fat16/32.
> Is Linux installed on TOP of Windows 98?
No Linux must be installed on a different disk or partition. But you can
also install it as UMSDOS file system
which i do not recommend for stability and performance.
>
> Can I access Windows 98 from the Linux mode?
Yes it is easy. This connectivity is done within Linux setup, as well as
you can do it later.
>
> Can I access my internet browser (Netscape) if
> I'm in Linux mode?
First of all Linux is not a mode. It is an operating system 'like'
windows. ('Like' here do not refer windows's instability,
low performance, damn blue screens, and reboots for every key pressed.)
DO NOT think that Linux is like a Dos Prompt
run under windows in a window.
You can use Netscape of course. But this will be the Netscape which will
be installed during setup of Linux.
When you finished setup you will have an Operating System with full of
programs which you dont need to pay
like Linux, Corel WordPerfect, KDE, GNOME, file managers some games,
compilers etc.
When u finished installation the blue screened box will become an ftp
server, a mail server, and what ever you think
of becoming online. Ah by the way the Normat Conditions here means that
you have right hardware for Linux.
For example a real modem. Most of the PCI modems are winmodems and do
not work under linux which can easily be understood from
their name : WinModem!

With the right modem of course!

Remember that backing up your docs is HIGHLY recommended by most Linux
gurus before going into the linux installation.
And finally, Linux is not for everyone! I mean it.
It does not need any basic skills but needs some curiosity, maybe
hardwork to work a piece of harware, healty eyes to read
pages of howtos and manual pages. But you ll see that the temp.
operating system will become the windows. ;)
