Thanks. Then another question: which one of SB cards would be fully and
easily
supported by Linux? I have SB16 in my old computer and it works fine. Now I
need
another card. What about SB AWE64 Value? It was mentioned in kernel
documentation.
However, this is ISA and I'd like to get PCI. Is SB PCI128/512 supported
natively by
Linux? Thanks again.

About month ago I bought HP Laser Jet 1100A which includes also copier and
scanner.
This is not a PostScript printer but it works absolutely fine (600 dpi and
very fast) with my
Linux box. Scanner doesn't work with Linux but copier does because it
does't require any OS.
You can buy this printer from one of the Web sites (what I did) for
about $350 (check
http://www.shopper.com). You can also buy additional memory - 16Mb for
about $30.

Hi,
I want my Epson Stylus Color 740 to print on my Linux machine (SuSE 6.1,
kernel 2.2.5) but it doesn=B4t like to. I tried stc800??.upp, stc600??.up=

and stc500??.upp but without success.
Is there anybody who has such a printer successfully working on Linux? I

Subject: some BIOS settings
Date: 21 Jun 1999 08:23:33 GMT
I have a machine dedicated to Linux, based on a MVP3 mainboard
from EPoX. The BIOS is from Award.
There are two options in the "CHIPSET FEATURES SETUP" menu:
Video BIOS Cacheable and System BIOS Cacheable. The former is
documented briefly in the manual, the latter is not.
How do I have to set these options, disable or enable, in respect
especially with Linux ?

Brien,
Could you be more specific? I'm running a K6-2 350 over clocked
to 400 on an Asus P5AB mobo (Ali chipset). In 2.2 kernels it defaults to
pio. Following my experience with a Compal P120, which was transformed by
tweaking hdparm, I tried the same on the Asus, and trashed my system disk
8-( It seemed to be activating 32 bit transfers that caused the problems,
but I'm not completely sure, and have no wish to try it again!
I've been trying kernel 2.3.5, which has support for the Ali chipset. So
far, this has performed flawlessly, with a useful increase in speed. It
correctly detects UDMA, but I haven't tried tweaking anything yet (nor do I
intend to, 'till I know a bit more about the effects!)

I don't know about Red Hat, I'm running SuSE 6.1, but there is a mini howto
about the CMI 8330. I followed it, and it now works perfectly. I don't even
have to use isapnp! By selecting a decent midi patch, the sound is
infinitely better than this chip manages under Windoze or OS/2!

Thanks for the advice.
Its actually a client of ours that is getting the UPS and they've
decided to go for an APC 1400 Smart UPS.
I've got it here in the office now and I've tried to use apcupsd but
to no avail. Nothing happens when the power goes down. The cable
supplied is a
940-0024C
and in apcupsd.conf I have the following settings
UPSCABLE 940-0024C
UPSTYPE smartups
DEVICE /dev/ttyS1
But whenever I type
apcaccess status
the command just hangs with the line
apcaccess (fifo) : polling for status
Just to re-assure you, I do have the /sbin/powersc INIT line in the
rc.local and a process is running. I've tried other software like
checkups and smartups but they seem to think the power is always
failing so I guess I don't have the cable configuration right.
I don't know whether you have any further advice about how you've
configured apcupsd but it would be awfully helpful since I seem to be
digging myself a hole!
Many thanks

The Cannon LBP660 and the HP1100s do not support PostScript printing.
LBP660 understands PCL4 though. I've read somewhere you need to set
the printing filter to raw or something similar for PCL printing.

The only partition that needs to be kept under 1024 cylinders is the
partition with your kernel on it... When I did a default "Workstation"
installation on a friend's computer (Pentium 120, 8.4gig WD drive) it made
a /boot partition that was about 25megs(?) or so, enough to be kept under
the cylinder limit. As long as your boot partition (whatever it may be
called, mine is /) is under 1024 cylinders, you should be fine.

Hi,
I did the manipulations described in this thread for a Dell Latitude CPi 366
... and it does not work. Looking at the messages from /var/log/messages, it
seems I've got the io address wrong:
Jun 21 11:32:17 alan-schm1p kernel: snd: Yamaha OPL3-SA soundcard #1 not found
at 0x120 or device busy
Jun 21 11:32:17 alan-schm1p kernel: snd: Yamaha OPL3-SA soundcard not found or
device busy
I tried to find the correct address under windows, but I cannot find the
information. I also tries to look in /proc ... but did not find anything. I
have two questions:
- Did anyone succeed with this laptop ?
- How can I find the correct io address ?
Thanks a lot,

Hi phantom1 without a name,
you should mount it as hdl1, hdl2, hdl3, and hdl4, respectively.

The success rate of PlugnPlay is somewhere near 50%. This is because
